  • Martin, what advice did your surgeon give you about starting running again after your operation?

  • Good luck Neems! Martin good to here your progress is going fine.

latest on me is that I'm trainning for the Brass monkey half marathon in january 08. I'm running well and managing to up my speed to 7.5 mileing over 10k. I have had some set back for a while where I was getting really sore after a few miles. I think it was to do with my old running shoes and over striding. But all has been well for the last few weeks so back on track now. One thing I have noticed now is that my other hip is starting to ache! So could be in the next few years I have that replaced too! My scar is taking time to go. But Im not expecting to do some nude modeling at my age, so who cares about the scar. LOL  Darker nights coming soon so will have to unfortunatly start running a bit more on the road.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Inky fingers....  give it six weeks at least before you start any trainning!  The area operated on needs to be fully repaired first, which takes at least six weeks. Then maybe you can do some steady work on the treadmill. I was running two 10k's within three months after I had my new hip fitted.
  • hi guys, just come back from swimming.  I'm concentrating on getting plenty of excercises done in the water as apposed to doing loads of lengths. I went out for a two hour stint on the mountain bike last week  the only real thing that hurt was my ass but thats what comes with not doing cycling for a while. We're going to the lakes, little langdale this weekend with the mountaineering club so I intend to get a long walk in on sat with a stop in the pub after we finish.        on wednesday I'm back to leeds to see the consultant so I hope to start running if I get the ok.   like dave I find the healing of the scar seems to be the biggest problem, so I think the center fold pages of the nude running calendar will have to be side lined for the moment.image))))
  • hi guys, just to let you know I'm now back at work. I've been trying to run but only get a mile at a good pace when I get this dull pain from the groin area. I don't know if it's because I'm trying to push myself too early or if this is the best its going to be. I'm   seeing the consultant in december  to have a check up  so he maybe able to shed some light on it.  My  walking is fine, my wife and myself are up at 6 every day doing 2 miles before breakfast. I've  got my london number yesterday so I'm going to have to see how things progress.:0))))))) one thing is for sure the hip is 100% better than it was.
  • Good luck with the checkup Martin.
  • cheers nigel, the consultant will  most probally blow a fuse when I tell him what I intend to do. my son is running for wizzkids with a gold bond number so the race is on. he's really fit with the training he does with the GB squad in tae twon do marshal arts. I've got a sort of feeling I won't be first back.:0))))) hows it with u???????
  • Hi Martin,

I thought I'd replied to this thread ages ago but evidently not, or it got lost in the ether!

I was diagnosed with excessive wear in a hip joint (arthitis) and the start of a stress fracture in the neck of the femur. I had to rest a lot (1 hour walks max, on flat ground) until the stress fracture healed. Then, after previously saying it would be best to give up running, my sports injury doctor said that I could run again if I wanted but to start with short runs and only increase the mileage slowly. Also not to run on roads (suits me as we've just moved to the Lake District and I have oodles of off-road terrain to explore), not to jump down off stiles onto that leg, and not to run ultras. But that if I did, to take ibuprofen before rather than after, in order to keep down any swelling.

Because of our move I haven't had time to push my limits, but have done quite a few 6-milers in the surrounding countryside, including a couple of fell runs. I therefore feel happy that I've had a stay of execution, but a bit worried about running longer distances in case the arthritis gets significantly worse.

At least now I've read up about the options so that when I need hip resurfacing I can choose the right thing, and I can save up for it beforehand!

Good luck with your goal, but don't be too despondant if you don't manage it. Better to live to fight another day and all that!

  • hi nigel,                           nice to hear you've moved to the lake district, we go as a group (scunthorpe mountaineering club) away to the lakes for weekends  staying in BMC huts. I really love that part of the country and you're lucky to be able to live there. my running has taken a nose dive as the pain is in the muscles round the hip is just too much .I can manage about a quarter of a mile and then have to walk. the walking is no problem hence walking in the lakes is just fine. the london marathon is out of the question this year so I'm going down to give support to my son who is doing it for the first time. he's a tae kwon do black belt and does alot of his training with the british team so although he's fit the running part is still going to be hard covering the 26mile distance.      after having the resurfacing I'm 100% better than I was but I don't know if i'll ever get back to  running.     thats life I suppose, I'm glad I can still do something. take care.
  • Hi to all,

You lot must have thought I had died!   Sorry not been on for so long. It's been one of them years when you get lots of things going wrong in life. Not really to do with my hip but family issues. Anyway I think I'm sorted out now.

After I last posted on here last year I did start having some hip pain that got worse each time I ran. Eventually I went back for a MRI scan. The scan showed that my hip was fine. But to make sure it wasnt the hip causing pain my specialist gave me a anaesthetic deep in to the hip joint which was to numb my hip for no more than 8 hours. In that time they told me to go for a run and try to make the pain come back. The pain did come back. This then proved the pain was not caused by my hip, possibly my back!

So off I went for a back xray.    Results came back stating that one of my lower disks was badly worn and some 3 boney bits worn too. Doctor told me theres not much they can do but maybe take Ibruprofen tablets. I started taking a high doesage two weeks ago. Within a week there was a massive imrovement. Hardly any pain when running. Yesturday Sat 21st Sept 08 I decided I felt good and wanted to see what I could do without bringing on pain. I ran for two miles in 14mins 35 secs without pain! I had 5 minute rest and then ran back two miles in 13mins 36 secs with still no pain! And I have not ran that fast for a long time. The only thing I did get was a bit stiff and ache in the back later when in bed. Them Ibruprofen tablets seem to be doing the trick. I'm due to go out for a 6 mile -7 mile run with the running club on Tuesday.  I think I will speed things up a little bit now to see if I can keep around a 7 minute mile going.

I just looked back and found this posting I put up on SUNDAY 8th APRIL 07. Just makes me wonder now that my back problem started just after the hip operation!

    I wrote..

MY FIRST 10K RACE 3 MONTHS AFTER MY NEW HIP WAS FITTED!...

At the last minute I entered the Guiseley Gallop (10k)in Yorkshire today.

To about half way in 26 mins was a bit too fast and just couldnt keep the pace up for the other half. I ended crossing the line in about one secound over the hour mark. But because it took me nearly 30 secs to cross the start line my watch time for the distance was 59:38. The last time I ran that race before the operation in 2005 I did a time of 42.57. So I'm a happy easter bunny today! Did I suffer you ask? At the halfway point I became a bit sore. At the end of the race I ached, but the pain was in my lower back not hip for some reason.

Four and a half hours on since race and my legs feel good. Only a slight ache in my back now.

Glad your doing ok Martin, but that was some time ago. How are you doing now?
