Not suggesting this is the norm either but my mum had a massive heart attack around 50 yoa. She was told it was stress related. She was not overweight, no high blood pressure and generally kept fit and ate healthily.

Around 60 yoa she was told her cholesterol was high and they gave her medication for that but it wasn't her cholesterol or heart that killed her in the end, she died of ovarian cancer a few years later and infact she bravely battled for years and her heart probably was the strongest part of her body in the end, even though she was convinced she had a weak heart because of the heart attack she had.

Hipps she does have high blood pressure and she is taking drugs for that.

Should she be a lot more strict with her diet? I know absolutely nothing about cholesterol other than what i've picked up on this thread!

FB I'm amazed at the amount of drugs your mum must have been taking!!
  • Options
she needs a proper dietetic assessment pavey

diet will make SOME diffeence to cholesterol-your mums might be higher if her diet was waorse
but a lot of people need statins too

its trying to prevent events in the future you see

dietary changes to cholesterol do take time to get results but it's doable - but it can also take some fun out of eating....

what's her diet like at the mo??? and how old is she??
  • Options
FB she's 62 and her diet is pretty good - she eats a lot of fruit (she eats fruit nearly all day while pops is at work), dinner is something like meat and veg or grilled fish and veg. Once a week they have a takeaway (usually fish and chips), she has maybe a bottle of wine over the weekend - possibly 2, and they have a treat over weekends - maybe a cake or something.

Hipps - should she go back to doc and ask him about statins? Also - what are statins?

  • Options
her doc is likely to have a plan for her cholesterol if he bothered to check it
yes, get her to ask him what the plan is
statins are drugs which lower cholesterol by inhibiting one of the body enzymes which makes it

Well - how many brownie points have I collected this morning!!!

Just had a long chat with my mum and it turns out that this morning she has been to the doc and she has been prescribed statins (hipps - thank you, i was explaining how she needs to take them on your advice!). The nurse also gave her a booklet with some more info. So it seems that we're getting somewhere!!

Thank you so much for all your help - I really appreciate it.

Don't get too hung up on your cholesterol.

If you look at the results of most medical surveys (not the conclusions given by the drug company sponsored scientists, but the actual body of evidence)there is no real correlation between raised cholesterol on it's own and coronary heart disease. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!! The surveys are all funded by drug companies who are making billions from scaring the hell out of all of us.

Did you know that is is more dangerous to have low cholesterol (under 3.5) with a greatly increased risk of cancer! This risk is even higher for those over 50!! The drug companies do not publish this.

Diet will only make a maximum difference of 10% to your overall level.

Coronary heart disease is due to a number of factors. Stress is a huge factor!

Enjoy your eggs, prawns, lean red meat and all other natural foods!

TR - if you read back I think you may find that has already been said...........

You're right FB - I just get so annoyed at the cholesterol hype.

Mine is a whopping 9.7 (genetic)- arteries are completely clear..... without statins.

It bugs me when people with 'normal' levels are told to worry and are put on statins by their GPs.......

Off the soap box now :)
  • Options
with respect TR - a chol of 9.7 is something I would be very worried about - your arteries may be clear now but as you age (I get the impression you are young from that picture) then it will become an issue as the plaques get laid down.............

I'm amazed - nay staggered - that you aren't trying to get it down....

heart disease is multi-factorial in the main but it's equally well known that chol in seriously elevated levels can also kill on it's own due to arterial constriction through plaquing............
  • Options
I'm amazed that a blatantly healthy person has undergone the hazardous and invasive investigations necessary to give an accurate assessment of arterial clarity.
  • Options
On the advice of a Harley St specialist - no need for statins.

The secret is...... half of it is HDL. Also have lots of another lipoprotein that keeps arteries clear.

So you see, a high cholesterol level is not automatically a killer!

You need to have a complete blood analysis, not your usual GP test and a scan.
  • Options
I was wondering about that too vrap
  • Options
nothing hazardous about a blood test guys - not for a girl anyway!!!!
  • Options
TR - again with all due respect - methinks you are living cloud cuckoo land............high HDL offers some protection but it's by no means guaranteed...........I guess the others you refer to are apoliporoteins (of which there are many variants - some genetically determined)

tbh - Harley Street confers no great confidence - some of the HL so called specialists I have met over the years have been amongst the biggest peddlers of alternative shite you have seen..........

one of them - now retired thankfully - was so on the edge of being corrupt I was amazed he managed to stay practicing - and he was one of the guys who got onto the cholesterol/heart disease bandwagons in the early days............obnoxious character
  • Options
FB - thanks for saying I look young - made my day!!!!

    Tiny runner
I thought you said you knew your arteries were clear
so i thought you meant you hsad had an angiogram-and that test is not wothout hazard
  • Options
bloomin heck - didn't go that far!!!!!! Scans are non-invasive
  • Options
what sort of scan did you have to "show that your arteries were clear"?
  • Options
TR, blood tests, however fancy and expensive, can tell you absolutely nothing about the actual current or future state of your arterial walls, whatever the Harley Street doctor may have led you to believe.
  • Options
Would be astonished if this is what TR had, but can't you do Doppler ultrasound of the carotid to give an idea of sclerosis? Noninvasive but no idea of accuracy myself
  • Options
Gosh, can't remember the name of the main scan - CT maybe? Also had ultrasound on carotid arteries.

Hey, I have been VETY worried about it. So worried that I've read a hell of a lot of medical journals and books. The 'official line' on cholesterol is not the whole truth. I too have believed every word until you read the views of many other doctors.

Incidentally my specialist doesn't 'peddle s***te' He's one of the most highly regarded specialists in the UK (that's why I went to him) and firmly believes in statins.
  • Options
Carotid ultrasound as you say Smackie-will give a general idea, but obviously isnt as specific as an angiogram
it also depends on the ultrasound operator-there is quite a variation in expertise

TR - do take on board what my esteemed medical friends Hipps and Vrap may say to you as they will be concerned I am sure...

personally - with that chol level - I'd get a 2nd or 3rd opinion from a teaching hospital professional...............
  • Options
Thanks PH - that's what i'd thought. TR, intersting to hear your experiences. Can understand you being v worried by a cholesterol of 9.3

When you feel uneasyness to body think that something problem you are having in your body. High cholesterol take place due unsure tension in life for that doctor first will not tell you, what is the reason you feeling uneasyness to your body? sometimes it depends on the diet also. But I think after high cholesterol go for check up daily to doctyor for your pressure because it is main systoms to your body.

High cholesterol usually has no symptoms. That's why it's important to have your doctor check your cholesterol levels with a simple blood test. One can explore more info at http://hemocue.us/
A hemoglobin test measures the levels of hemoglobin in your blood. Do you need Hgb test? If the Hgb blood test reveals abnormal levels of hemoglobin, doctors may order further tests. Read more about Hgb blood test at http://hemocue.us/
