Will echo what Bassy says. I can't crawl at all (am going to sort this over the winter) so I'm just getting the distance in the bag and them going to work on getting stronger until BM.
Yes and no, not in the context of entry fee to triathlon.
Don't worry about not being able to crawl. I'd forgotten until last year but can comfortably manage over 800 metres now without a problem. I'm still quite slow but have got used to it and find it more fun than breaststroke now.
This is in reply to Redraj but hope it encourages some other first timers too.
For my first tri (2005) I could only manage 75-100m without stopping, so ended up doing lots of intervals of those distances to build up my swim mileage. Like I said ended up doing a frontcrawl/breaststroke combo to get round. I decided I liked the sport (and the gallows sense of humour in transition pre-race) put in a winter's training (had some coaching sessions) and last year could comfortably swim the whole 750m frontcrawl. This year after another winter's training I'm looking to knock a huge chunk off last years time (which was only my second tri).
So be good enough to get round and make up time on the bike and run. But most of all don't take it too seriously and try and enjoy yourself. However, this might not happen during the race but on reflection over a cold beer afterwards!! )
I thin Blenheim's so pricey due to the use of the palace grounds. The good news is that it's all closed roads so you'll only bump into other competitors or spectators, i.e. no cars!
Guys, thanks for all the encouragement and advice. Managed to eek out a decent interval swim last night and covered around 600m fairly comfortably, so feeling fairly confident about it all now (he say's before falling flat on his face)!! Just going to keep squeezing out the lengths over the next few weeks and bob's your uncle.
Picking up my bike tonight as well. However, could do with some advice on wetsuits from anyone - had a look at Triuk and the below ex demos seem good value - anybody know what the quality is like and whether I'd be better spending a little more??
I hired mine from Tri UK and have the option to keep it. Am sure they send you a new one so you could always try this just for one season. Am in two minds if I should send it back at all !!
I presume the ex demos are either those that have just been used at shows or are the returns from the hired suits. It depends as to which they are if you fancy getting one.
I'd also be aware that this is 2 x 400m laps. Last year, after surviving the mass start I started my 2nd lap just as the next wave kicked off thereby having to tackle another mass start.
So all I can advise is swim faster than I did or slower so the 2nd lap isn't as traumatic!!
Tri UK do the cheapest wet suit hire I found. But I think the fit of the wetsuit is more important than the cost. You can also pick up decent wetsuits very cheaply at the end of the season (got mine half price!).
A little bump for the bananaman thread... how's everyone's training going? Me - somewhat overtrained I think and had to ease off a little last week.... feeling refreshed this week though and hit 1000 m in the pool last week which felt like a major milestone!! Suddenly 800m seems achievable !
You should enter cos I need to see your Stallion and check him out. Furthermore more Ive now got a Kuota who is a lady, called Phillipa. They can get jiggy in transition whilst I flounder about.
Unfortunately as i couldn't swim more than 200m without dying on my ass and as I hadn't ridden a bike since sometime in my dark and distant past, no training was simply not an option for now! Sadly, I'm also in possesion of a rather embarrasing competitive streak so bonking with DNF is simply not something my pathetic ego would accept!!
Whats unpiratey, I didnt do a half this weekend! Oh the slur on my character! I did a long cycle, but that dont count cos I ate lots. I did NO running at all or any swimming.
Besides <whispers> everyone trains a little bit, just pretend you dont!
My swimming is officially pants so dont worry, you must be better than me easily!
So bassy, you being a little bit of a bike geek, can you recommend a compliant helmet that won't make me look a complete nonce for around 30 smackers???

Good luck and get down the pool :-)

There I go crossing my threads again. Haha!

Very unpirate like!
My brother is trying to talk me into it

What more do you need?
Oh, it will be a good laugh too.

It's said with envy... I know nothing and feel somewhat intimidated by everyones bike knowledge and vocab!
Let you off then, youve buttered me up with "expert"
Bassy, how's the bike training for TBW going (sandbagger)?
It looks like a nice distance. As a half way house before an oly
But I'm not allowed to enter anything this week cos I've just done Blenheim and I can't make rational decisions the week after an event.
Best time to enter events is when you are not rational in my opinion!
If I entered everything I considered the week after a good event I'd be dead on my feet with no social life!
Ask me again next week! :-)
