Commando, definitely. If by "visual effects" you mean camel toe, the right fit of lycra shorts will avoid that in my experience. If you mean visible pubes nope, never happens (but I don't wax mine so no regrowth).

One thing to be aware of if you are going pants-less is mesh-gusset tights. I wore mine for a run and then popped into Sainsbury's on the way home. I decided to stretch whilst Mr. H wandered off looking for something and didn't remember until I had bent over that I was leaving nothing to the imagination.

and talking of see through shorts - that can be a bit of a downside of tri-shorts........they are generally a more specilaist material than normal cycle shorts to speed up drying - and when someone's stretched forward on the bike can become a little see through.........I have followed many a visible crack on the bike - the rider doesn't generally know (or care) that the crack becomes visible through the material........

black or white undies, had the bum go in a pair of new shorts once doing a run with my friend. Had pink ones on at the time. Mind you half the time am hitching the bloody things back where they belong or removing wedgies so maybe should try commando!
