Does anyone know about the fees for this? A friend picked up an application for me last weekend which says £18, but on the website it says free entry with a £90 minimum donation to a charity! I'm confused!
NO! I posted my application off some time ago but still not heard anything yet. One of my colleges did say he thought they didnt start sending stuff out in past years till July.
I think I entered on the day last year - mind you it was shocking weather so a few probably didn't turn up.
This was one of the best races for me last year and the curry on Saturday night in Tywyn was exceptional.
If you've got friends or relatives that want to ride the train then its a good idea to book train tickets in advance - there was some confusion last year and a lot of very upset people having a go at one of the organisers - the poor guy was almost in tears.
If you want a good time then you need to start at the front of the field and leg it for the first segment on the road - approx 1 mile. once you get on the narrow sheep trails its almost impossible to overtake.
pre race orgaisation for this is shocking - i've mailed them 6 times asking for confirmation that the tickets are booked, but heard nothing. also, still haven't had my mug from last year despite paying in advance for it
this'll be the 4th year that i've done it, and it was only last year that the organisation was a shambles, although as you say, the marshalls were fantastic hanging around in all that rain - at least we were keeping warm by moving!
Received an email confirming my entry has been accepted. Organisation for the event changed hands last year, so that may go some way to explaining some of the inadequacies. Will be my 4th time and will probably fail to be beat the train again. Still it's my first race as a vet, so I can use that as an excuse for a slow time
I've been twice now, last year I had a completed shafted back and could barely walk. I did manage to shuffle 5k with my daughter though.
The previous year I did 1:46 and beat the train, which was a proud moment. Agreed that the organisers give a "part time" aura in the build up to the event, but it really does all come together on the day, and the Saturday night party is a blast.
Me and sis are entered in this, slightly concerned that for an inexperienced runner and an out of practice runner this might be a bit much. And I never knew there was a second train....how long does that take?
I never heard of a third train because I might stand a chance of beating that!
The key is to get ahead in the first 7 miles and only the first and last mile or so is on road. Running on sheep trails is interesting but with little opportunity to overtake once you're on them.
The little steam train toot toots. Its a great atmosphere.
I've entered this now. It said something on the RW events listing about raising £90 and entry is free. But I entered on their website and they charged £20. I hope they don't want £90 aswell!!?!?!?
Need to book tickets now for my fella and the kids so they can ridicule me .... as he puts it. Hope there are still spaces!?!
Some answers regards to the races. - They are all on the Saturday. Write that down. I nearly came a cropper there.
- The 14.5 mile (main) race starts in the afternoon. Use your own watch as the tannoy system can't guarantee to fetch you from the big field. I nearly came a cropper there. I nearly came a cropper there.
- The Main race goes up country, crosses under the track, then gets "interesting" with a bit of an incline.
- The 10k starts up country (coach or train to start) then goes straight up the "intersting" bit. Might be a bottleneck unless you are quick.
- The fun run/5k/short fun run starts from a rail halt up country. Tyn Llyn Hen
- it's all a bit informal, but fun.
- the race is partly on road, partly on countryside. It seems to be longer than it actually is, but that's just the hills for you.
They ask on the web site if we can enter online as it makes it easier for them, as they don't have to fill in the forms and don't have to decipher the hand writing, which is fair enough but don't charge us for helping them out, and not put up the price difference.
Any way thats my winge out of the way, now I'm looking forward to the race and hope its not as wet as last year, and i can beat that dam train!!!.
Chris22 and Mr Phil ..... we need to consider ourselves lucky as the RW events says this is free entry with a £90 sponsorship 'thing'!!!! No way I could raise that as I only know tight people ;-) Seriously though, was glad to simply pay the £20.
REEEEEEally looking forward to this, been meaning to do it for years.
Bagsee the fastest-latest-stopper-outer-poster trophie ;-)
Caz, you've got a good point there, the race is well worth £20.Just hope its not as wet as last year. it can get a bit dangerous on the way back in the wet.

Last year the results took about 5 days and the results from last year weren't on the site last time I looked.
Its still a great race though and the people marshalling and manning the water stations were very jolly.
watch out for the camber on the return leg - got the worst blisters of my life when i ran this 4 years ago
unique and one most definitely to do before you lash your final pair of trainers

This is a very very special race.
Cheers in advance

still have yet to hear anything from them about my entry

Mr Phil - I'll win that challenge hands down :-) Beating the train is for wimps, staying up late boozing is for toughies ;-)
