Downloaded Accuroute software off the internet yesterday, which allows you to trace your route over a computer map image to work out distances. I managed to find some local maps from Ordnance Survey and worked out the distances of my local routes.......
The distance were everywhere.... Some were shorter than I expected (hence the depressed state of affairs) and I realise I'm even unfitter than I thought... Only saving grace being that some of the runs were a bit longer...
Has any one else used this? Did you have similar results?

No wonder the distances weren't accurate, but will struggle to get it much better... Patience is not one of my strong points...
Has it seemed accurate for you though, give or take hills..... Suppose the hills would have the benefit of making the routes further... should have thought of that ...
I've been using it for over a year and think its one of my more useful running purchases.
The other good thing about it is that you can save your routes.

not sure if that link will work - it might wrap. Anyone know how to put in URLs properly?
I would strongly recommend Trailgauge aswell its a lot easier to use than accuroute and has loads more features.
You can get it from http://www.trailgauge.com
Installs pretty easily.
Then I drove round it in the car and clocked it at 4.8 then I measured it with Trailgauge and found it was only 4.4 miles - how disappointing.
But unless you're seriously training for a race it doesn't matter what distance you're running.
Anyway I looked at Accuroute and Trailgauge and opted for Trailgauge mainly because I found it easier to use. With accuroute, I found it hard to get the same measurement twice on the same route because you have to be so careful with the mouse. Its also a real pain with accuroute that you have to be able to see all of your route on the screen at the same time which you can rarely do on longer routes unless you want to compromise on accuracy. But what topped it was the ability to save routes on a calibrated map and go back to them later.
Try them both and see which you prefer.
I'll give it a go, I think I may have lost it. I'll have to try again.......
I think that the map24 software is the best of the three... being free helps, but being able to scroll through the maps, without having to stick maps together is great...... still not acurate though..... (or mine aren't)..
Its a lot less useful than trailgauge though because you can't measure distances unless the whole route is visible on the screen (same as accuroute). So accuracy suffers a bit. Also I can't work out how to get the distances in miles.
The maps don't have any footpaths on them so its not much use for off road running.
DOH!
