My Last Run

  • The Guardian is carrying the news that Parkrun is back on 26th June. Something to train for - and old friendly faces to meet up with again.

As my standard training run is more or less on the course of our local Parkrun, and thus a 23.19 yesterday gives me a pretty good indication of my likely result, although I'm hoping that the white heat of competition (irony - I think) will sharpen me up a bit.

Hazel, you seem to be getting in some very decent sessions. Are you injury free? Have you got a specific event (or events) that you are currently training for? As for 10ks I know some guys who run 5Ks and also run much longer distance who really detest running a 10k race ('the devil's distance'!). I can sort of see this.

Swittle, an hour long steady run is admirable. Do you ever mix it up?

Here's a little story which shows how all sports draw on the dedication of volunteers. My friend, who is just getting into officiating, had a 50 mile round trip last night to  attend a county schools meet. He was allocated the discus event. Only one contestant turned up!

  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
It is confirmed, John - so happy but wish I was in better shape! That must have been annoying for your friend, sheesh. I'm sure the one contestant appreciated it, though.

swittle, I'm getting my runs done early when it's a bit fresher. I could definitely do with my room being cooler, though - being west facing, I get the heat at the end of the day so the temperature maxes out when I'm ready for bed. Ugh.

Well done Hazel...you are really knocking them out.

Two days off for me - a 45 minute elliptical session (plus some rehab) on Thursday and then yesterday I wasn't feeling great, plus it was grey and muggy, so decided I'd move that run to today.

Today was sunny and a bit fresher (still warm, just not as muggy) so it was a good decision. I did 5 miles - a slow plod to start and then I did a bit of light speed work - basically using the block behind my house and running faster down the long roads and recovering at the top and bottom. Hit sub-9 pace on six of the seven reps (first was a little slower) which is just below MP. Still got a way to go before I can hit parkrun paces, though.
Could feel my right knee a little and it's definitely down to a tight ITB so need to get on top of that, smartish.

John, that's a speedy 5k time - bet you can hardly wait for 9am on Saturdays, barcode at the ready!  Crosby Coastal Park runs parallel to the beach, a good 3km from the Mersey to the old coastguard station - there are plenty of trails & paths to give me variety - but the best part is 'no concrete, no tarmac'.  And I have the Iron Men and water birds for company on the lakes.

Cal, the heat's rising this weekend, I hear, but I'm under orders to rest from exercise for a week after two hours of dental work in preparation for implants yesterday.  Although the work is eyewateringly expensive, I'll have a smile that I will no longer try to hide, and better eating function too.

Hazel - another good range of sessions.  I think terms for coat colour are quite unusual, similar to bay and roan with horses.  The Rottweiler was about half grown but a good armful!
  • Cal, good session. I wonder if the knee is subconsciously holding you back a bit. (No bad thing, of course - the mind exerting a brake on the body.) Given that cities are always hotter than other places it must have been near to uncomfortable for you this morning.

Swittle, I know Formby a little and parts of Liverpool pretty well, but (forgive me) I always seemed to bypass Crosby. I know they have a decent non-league footie team and that's about it. If you ever do the Croxteth Park PR then my back garden used to back onto that - but many, many years before PR (1984).

Talking of which I now am pessimistic on its return as the Covid briefing on Monday will (with good reason) put back 'Freedom Day' (a stupid term) and with it, I think, will go the Parkruns. Shame but a couple more weeks won't make much difference. Although Mrs JB would have rather heard this prediction before she went out to run 5k this morning just to see if she could still do it prior to PR's return!

Good luck with the teeth implants and the Hollywood smile!

I meant to have a rest day today and just do a short bike ride. But the bike ride took me to the the top of a local hill and it was just too tempting to get my leg over (as it were) and run up and down some short and rather sharp slopes. I have to confess that this is my favourite sort of training: a quick route to exhaustion followed by a bit of a recovery and then here we go again....and again. The best bit is passing the odd walker who does a double-take as an old git labours (I'd like to say 'glides') past them. I even get the odd word of encouragement.
  • HazelnutCHHazelnutCH ✭✭✭
Shame you didn't get to see the eclipse swittle. It is great to see you running with that endurance and consistency again. You are right about the hat, sunscreen etc. Good luck with the new gnashers..

Good 5k time JB, you will be faster with others. Fingers crossed that the lifting of restrictions won't be delayed much. I have an occasional hip niggle which comes and goes, needs a bit of stretching, otherwise I'm fine injurywise. No aims eventwise yet, wan't to see they will actually happen. Shame for your volunteer friend with the discus. Like your bike and run hill mix.

Can imagine you don't enjoy the heat then Cal. Good to see you putting in a bit of speedwork. Hope that ITB is very temporary.

Late afternoon run yesterday, 11.x miles. Heat was bearable as there was a decent breeze and I found quite a few shaded bits which were pleasant enough. Legs were heavy after a day at my desk, I should maybe have stuck them under a cool shower first.

I decided to switch to a morning run today and will mostly stick to that in the coming days. Less warm than yesterday evening but much higher humidity which actually was more unpleasant. I had I think 3 brief breaks for cooling hands face and wetting my hat in assorted water troughs en route. Plus some sips of water - not out of the trough but from the supply constantly running in (drinking quality in general). 10k, then a further 2.5 miles with 10 short hill efforts, a minor jog and a set of 10 relaxed strides.  Finished with about one k to home but decided to walk that as a cool down.
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
swittle, good luck with those implants - sounds like money well spent.

Hazel - yeah, just tight from sitting on my arse playing Planet Coaster on my PC.  :D
I don't enjoy the heat, no. Summer is my least favourite season. Well done for getting out on a muggy day.

John, I like runs like that too and look forward to getting back to that point soon.

I managed to get out at 6:15am for today's run despite new neighbours keeping me awake longer than I wanted by having all their mates round to their garden yesterday - my window looks over it so I could hear them even with earplugs in (I'll cut them some slack as people have been missing socialising for the last year and a half, but I hope they don't make a habit of it).

I had 10 miles as a goal so decided to go back to the section of the Wandle that runs from Colliers Wood to Mitcham and includes Morden Hall Park and a lovely nature reserve. I've not run that since last summer and was missing it.
While I was in the park, a couple approached me and warned me of a guy in red who was a flasher. I saw him further along the path lurking between two trees, and told him "don't even think about it!" as I ran past. Fortunately he kept Percy in his pants.

It was already very warm and I was definitely feeling it by the time I got to the road that goes through Mitcham Common - I hadn't taken water with me, which I started to regret by that point. I decided to go straight home from there but took the wrong road in Mitcham which added some distance to my run (I knew how to get back from where I was as I'd done a walk there during my time out, but it added a chunk on). I was still a couple of miles from home when I hit 10 miles but I decided to press on, even though I was pretty knackered. In the end it was 12 miles which is the longest I've done since I got benched. HR got pretty high according to my watch but I'm not surprised given the likely dehydration and lack of sleep. Anyway, happy I've managed 12, I should be good for that half next month, though it'll be a slow one no doubt.
  • Cal/Hazel, Thanks as ever for the positive feedback. The heat seems to be a theme here (we'll ignore the flasher for now). I too went out earlier today to avoid the worst of it. Our prom is completely shade-free (bad news) but I don't run the sort of distances that you guys do - plus there's usually that sea-breeze which I moan about far too much but  which in this weather is a godsend.
Managed a 22.40 5K, which equates to a WAVA of 74.46%, my best for a few weeks.

I then went to see my granddaughter in her Junior Parkrun. She seems to avoided the ultra-competitive gene (no bad thing) that comes from my side of her lineage and is quite happy to skip around chatting to her little friends. She managed a PW today (disinheritance time!).
Seriously, it's a lovely way of getting really little 'uns into running and she always finishes with a smile on her face (unlike her granddad!)

Cal - I suspect your available routes don't feature views quite as spectacular as Hazel's, but you do seem to have access to some lovely green spaces. That flasher should be getting a visit by the local constabulary: that's disgraceful behaviour. Just as a matter of interest, what is your optimal HR zone? (I genuinely have no clue about HR training but I know some people swear by it.)
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
John, if you're interested in heartrate training, drop in on the Shades thread in the training forum - a few of 'em use it and know quite a bit about it. I tend to run more by effort. I only have the wrist-based censor in my watch and those are not as accurate as chest straps but it's usually fairly consistent. My HR is quite high compared to many people but I am more concerned when it's higher than my normal level. Today was, but the heat and dehydration would have played a part. I do have an appointment with a cardiologist next month so I guess we'll find out if there's something not right there (I am not sure that there is, but my mum had a leaky valve so doc has sent me to be on the safe side).
  • swittleswittle ✭✭✭
Looked at my RW profile - I joined in June 2004!! :-o
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
swittle, I beat you there - March 2004! I really didn't post much until around 2015 or so though.
  • swittleswittle ✭✭✭
Good for you!  I think i 'got' the internet that year.  A few of the threads on the forum were quite offputting - personal insults, bullying tone etc. ... and that's why I migrated to FetchEveryone!  ;)
  • Cal, thanks for the explanation. Clearly that appointment with the cardio expert is going to be v. significant. Rest day for me. Seems even hotter today.
  • HazelnutCHHazelnutCH ✭✭✭
Eurrgh to the flasher Cal.  Good for confidence for the HM for you to run 12 miles.  Good idea to get yourself checked out by the cardiologist.

Fast 5k / great wava JB.  Plenty of time in the future for your granddaughter to get competitive if she wants to - sounds like she has fun!

My HRM (wrist based) often has wierd ideas - high rates on recovery runs and surprisingly low on tempos - I tend to ignore it.

swittle / cal - long term rw members!  Running was a distant memory for me 2004.  I restarted in 2006, rw since 2016.

Sunday saw a first attempt at a reasonably local Challenge event.  Normally it is a 10.5k race which takes place mid-/late August but at the moment it is not clear if it will take place (fingers crossed as it is not yet cancelled either).  In order to put on something at least if it doesn't happen the organizers have set up chip timing equipment for 10k (well 9.92k) for two weeks with online results and a decent prize draw for all participants.  You can take part as often as you like within the 2 weeks. I know quite a few people on the organizing committee so decided to do my bit to support it and have a go.  One warm up round without my number (which I ran too fast), a quick break for a drink and change to a vest rather than t-shirt, stick on the number and then off for a second round for the timing.

My  original plan was to put in something around 50 mins and have another go this week at a better time but of course I set off too fast.  The first k always measures too long on this course due to it being one long tunnel of trees, the second was then too fast by the GPS due to it adjusting and by the third I was struggling as I was mostly in the sun.  The route is also along a river which means quite a lot of humidity. Down one bank, over a bridge and back on the other side. I slowed a bit for four and five and then promptly ground to a halt somewhere in number 6 as I faced an oncoming dogwalker and I don't like people seeing me struggle on lone training runs.   That somehow helped though as I got going again and finished the rest off at not far off 10k PB pace for 45:23.   Slow cool down after another drink for another 2.x miles.  I might well have another go at the end of this week - I have my second jab on Saturday and a tough hill race the week after so it will be my only other chance.  Getting round more evenly would be a good goal a quicker time nice but it will stay hot the next days.

Recovery 5 miles this morning pre-work to take advantage of the cool conditions.  Not a bad idea to move the legs a bit prior to a day at my desk.
  • HazelnutCHHazelnutCH ✭✭✭
More recovery running this morning - 10k in just under 56 minutes.  Get up, mug of tea, bit of work, out for a run, lots of work, shopping, washing and another short recovery this evening to try out a double (feature in P&D plans as of a certain mileage).  Haircut as well later - must be good for aerodynamics.  Exciting sort of day.

  • swittleswittle ✭✭✭
Your planning & variety of 'to dos' should be productive, Hazel!

2 hours of gardening in 21 deg C of sunshine is likely to be my limit today.  Absolutely glorious in Crosby.
  • Hazel, that sounds like a good event. You seem to have a lot going on what with that hill race coming up too. By the sound of it you are certainly putting in the miles right now. Time to cash in with some great times (PBs?) and a few scalps.

I did my short, sharp, steepish, runs session. Brutal while it lasts but the actual running time is not much more that 12 minutes. I tend to walk the downhills which become an extended recovery. Not sure how much good it's doing me but I don't need an HRM to tell me it's hard. I cycle there and back as a warm up/warm down.
  • swittleswittle ✭✭✭
Back a couple of days - Formby Point is an area I find myself drawn to regularly, regardless of season, John.  The beach can be packed in fine weather but the woods have shade a plenty, good, firm, sandy trails too.  I never knew about the asparagus farming until recently.  Some searching revealed that Formby hosted the first lifeboat station in the world, the idea of a former privateer!
    https://lancashirepast.com/2018/08/27/formby-lifeboat-station-a-world-first/
The pics show how little remains - it served as a cafe, before demolition in 1970.

Used to train on trails around Croxteth Park - the hall looks to be v impressive from photos but access is still restricted.
  • HazelnutCHHazelnutCH ✭✭✭
Ideal gardening weather swittle.  Formby sounds an ideal place for running.  I had a quick read through the article - interesting stuff.

Nice hill work session JB.  Walking the downhills saves the jolting on the joints.  How long is the cycle?

Managed my double yesterday - out fairly late to avoid the worst of the heat.  It was warm rather than hot at 7:30pm and actually quite pleasant in the woods I ran through for part of the run.  Pace was a bit higher than ideal for a recovery run.  The thoughts of a vast bowl of couscous salad were pulling me home on the return.  4 miles in 36 minutes.
  • Swittle, I didn't know that fact about Formby's history, but I do know that it's one of the few places that still has a red squirrel population. Please don't tell me that I'm wrong on this; that would be very sad news. Croxteth Park is lovely but the surrounding area has its 'challenges'.

Hazel, my bike rides tend to be short and sweet. I don't really think of myself as a pukka cyclist. Nice that you could find some shade to run in. I tried a 10K on the shadeless prom today. Boy, it was hot - but the saving grace was a lovely little sea-breeze. Did 49.59 - which sounds impressively precise until I admit that I was going for a sub-49! However when I realised that I was fading, I did still have to dig a bit deep to get under 50. 'Relieved' is a better word here than 'satisfied' - although the heat did take its toll.
  • swittleswittle ✭✭✭
You can be reassured that The Reds are doing well at Formby Point, despite several serious bouts of squirrel pox - the 2008 outbreak cut the population to 10% of what it was beforehand.  http://www.cheshirenow.co.uk/formby_red_squirrel_reserve.html

Well I've not had a good time - knee was niggling on Monday and then hip and groin joined in. Some stiffness there has obviously caused the knee to niggle and it's my own fault for raising my mileage too quickly after being sedentary for a while. Anyway, did gym and elliptical on Monday and Tuesday and a lot of foam rolling.
I felt OK enough to attempt a run this morning - 5 very ploddy miles at 6am. It as already warm and humid. Had some aches and twinges but I could run. I am, however, seeing my physio tomorrow (even though it's my birthday) so I hope he can loosen me up a bit.
  • Hi folks! How are you all!  Back still bad.

Great weather still! 28c today in the south east!

    Few runs to report;

Thursday; 4 miler, back really hurt, booked physio.
Sunday; 16 mile trail at super-easy pace, with walk breaks when back was at worst.  Warm!, even starting at 8am.

Monday; physio.  He reckoned my back pain is down to too much driving for work.  I've worked out 1000 mile a week x 16 years = 800,000 ish miles! To the moon and back, and back and nearly back again! or 32 world circumferences!  Too much!
I have a stack of stretches I'm doing, time will tell.. Fingers crossed.  Said he hoped it wasn't anything too severe, hope so.  Said I can run!  He was genuinely shocked I have done 3 hour plus runs last two weekends,  I said thats normal in marathon training, (he's a cyclist).

Tuesday trail 10k. lots of stretches and first night I managed to sleep all night which was bliss!  Still sore in the morning.

Sorry you're still struggling Cal, hope the physio can help.  Happy birthday for tomorrow.

Nice 10K John. Great time, that breeze can make all the difference!  Good 5k time, Parkrun back soon I hear.

Nice double Hazle, salad sounds nice! I'm going to a morrocan restaurant saturday, looking forward to that.  Sound like the race went brilliantly.

Interesting articles Swittle, would love to see a red squirrel, never have.

Have a nice rest of the week.

  • HazelnutCHHazelnutCH ✭✭✭
Good news on the squirrels - chirpy little things.. We only have the reds here, all different shades from bright red to almost choc brown.  Much smaller than the greys.

Well done on the sub 50 10k in the heat JB.

Happy Birthday Cal!  Hope the physio can sort you out a bit.

That is a lot of driving LTT.  Glad you have been to the physio and hope those stretches will sort you out.  Good news you can keep running.

Medium long run yesterday evening - due to the heat I didn't go out until 19:30 so it was almost 10pm by the time I had finished.  Nice and quiet out as Switzerland was playing Italy as of 9pm.  I could guess CH was losing as it was so quiet running through the village a few times before heading back out into the woods on various loops.  Undulating route so pace deliberately slow.  Animals spotted - 1 fox, 2 deer and a hedgehog for the first time in ages.  Trundled across the road in front of me.   Was a bit hungry by the end to the extent that I briefly felt nauseous on stopping.  I must have hydrated fairly well pre-run as I didn't get too thirsty - another point of the regular visits to the village was to get to a water source rather than carrying any.
  • swittleswittle ✭✭✭
Cal - not the best part of your birthday to receive a pounding :(  Still, I hope you enjoy your special day.

Linton: sorry to hear back issues are still lurking.  Still, you're getting some decent sessions done.  What you say about driving makes good sense: I never covered anything like your weekly mileage but really felt scrunched when going by car more than 50 miles to an event.  Hammys & back mostly.

Yes, Hazel, you're right about the sizes of squirrels - I've never seen red & grey in the same place - indeed, the conservation folk take active steps - including contraception for the greys - to keep the 'red' areas exclusive.  Good wildlife count for you - not so good for the Swiss footballers :(

Sutures out of jaw tomorrow, so I'll start short & slowly on a return to running.

40-min. walk to the beach at 7am today, where I was reassured to meet this Masked Man>

LTT, good to hear you are still running despite the back. That driving mileage is horrendous!
Good luck with the physio treatment. Ditto Cal!

Nice wildlife updates from Swittle and Hazel. Red Squirrels Rule, OK?

Had a rest day from running so had a go on the rower. Managed a 5K which is long for me as I generally wimp out after 3k. My 5K row times are very close (30 seconds or so) to my running times. But I find the rowing much harder, especially in these hot, humid conditions.

On the injury front, My achilles are certainly no worse. Mrs JB can tell how they are by how stooped I am when we walk round to get the papers in the morning. My knee is a bit stiff. I've just worked out that I've not seen a physio/osteo for 20+ years. This is not a boast but probably more of an admission of stupidity. I tend to think of myself as injury prone but clearly I actually get off very lightly, especially given how many years I've been running.

PS happy birthday to Cal. May you have a painless and successful visit to the physio!
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
I fecked up with the physio unfortunately - I went to number 45 instead of number 54 (he's just moved) so I've had to reschedule for next week. Silly me.

I ventured out for a run this morning around 6:30 and found police in the road. Checked the local news when I got back and apparently someone got shot! My area is pretty safe for the mostpart - most of the violent crime is young lads stabbing each other in Streatham (which is what happened outside the Lidl last week) but I've not encountered a shooting, let alone on my doorstep.
Anyway, got 6 miles done in the rain, which I quite enjoyed. Knee and hammy were a bit grumpy but I didn't move much yesterday so I'm quite stiff. (And also full of cake).
  • HazelnutCHHazelnutCH ✭✭✭
Oh no - annoying regarding the mix up with the house number Cal.  Scary as well regarding the shooting.  Running in the rain would be nice - refreshing drizzle rather than a downpour?

Your IM is good on social distancing too swittle.  Good luck with the return to running - hopefully no discomfort.  I think the Swiss are on their way out of the tournament but it seems there are still ways to stay in - depending on what the others do.

My running career is shorter than yours JB, but I am also yet to visit a physio for running issues - also likely unwisely.  I have been lucky so far and niggles seem to sort themselves out over time - a grumbly achilles took months - I'm pretty sure now it was a certain pair of shoes.  Well done on the rower.

Double recovery(ish) to report - yesterday evening (5.27m) and this morning (4.26m).  Hot yesterday (29c) and warm and very humid this morning so I was glad that I wasn't aiming for anything faster.  Wildlife spot yesterday - a hare, nothing this morning - met one group of dog walkers which likely caused any local fauna to disappear.

Cal, crikey, I can see how your training might come in useful in that area, although I guess you'd have been pretty fast to outrun a speeding bullet. What a choker to get the wrong address. It can happy to any of us and I trust the physio was sympathetic. For obvious reasons its not wise to wind up a physio (or a dentist come to that).

Hazel, a hare! What a thrill. I've not seen one for years. It's the sort of reflection that can make you feel really low about nature and the environment. Even grasshoppers seem to be rare these days and yet when I was a kid they seem to be in everyone's garden. We've noticed that the council is no longer cutting verges, roundabouts and hedges. Whether this is through budget cuts or a wish to encourage insects I'm not sure but it's really good to see the 'weeds' break through. (I declare an interest as something of a weed myself!) And then you get idiots writing to the local paper ranting that it makes the county look scruffy and unkempt.
Sorry, my rant over..........and just to balanace things out a bit, White Tailed Eagles have been spotted about 2 miles from our house - a species that has not visited these shores for many a year, I believe.

5k in 22.52 today. A few seconds slower than of late. Lots of runners out and about. Like weeds, they are good to see.
  • swittleswittle ✭✭✭
Decent distance on 'the oars', John.  Every training session a gift gratefully received!

Glad you're logging miles again, Cal.  Parts of most cities are well worth avoiding - I can name the ones in Liverpool.  Fortunately, the beach & trails near me are too far off the beaten track for scallies to inhabit.

Bored with footie, so I broke my week's rest and managed 50:50 of v steady beach & trail at 10 last night.  The rest has eased some aches & improved my breathing.  :-)  Recovery stroll to the coastal park, where bird breakfast had plenty of takers.
