I'm just wondering what warm up races anyone is thinking of for IMF?
Blenheim and Bala might be a bit close to IMF...what do people think?
What alternatives are there?
I'm assuming that there will be the pirate massive at a couple of events next year?

I was thinking of doing the three Thames Turbo events as speedwork sessions. They are on Easter Monday and the two May Bank Holiday mondays. I am planning to do a long brick on the Saturday, and then do these on the Monday. They are short with a pool swim, but as they are on the Monday, it is easy to combine them with long weekend work. O/W triathlon is hard to find that time of year. The only one I can think of is Eton.
I was also thinking of doing the Breakfast Run in Kingston.
if you need more than 3 weeks taper, you're just being over-enthusiastic / lazy.
plus, bala is a great race, well organised and extremely friendly, and historically has good pirate craic.
I suppose what Im asking is do you use it as a full on speedwork kind of race, or keep some in the tank and just use it to gain experience? Sorry if this is a numpty question!
You use it as practice. Practice for nutrition, transitions, OW race start and ostensibly you wouldn't want to go all out but I think you'll find that you go a bit harder than you would when training. Unless you dont have any of that tiresome testosterone.
with specific aims to practise:
a) open water sighting
b) transitions
c) nutrition
d) pacing / HR control etc.
the run course is definitely not flat, so if you feel good towards the end you could certainly push a bit on that and make up some time / places.
so, in between full on and just get round. there's no point in bimbling round, but equally going flat out and bonking is a bit silly.
Bassy - I think it depends on your level of experience. I tried to do Bala last year at the perceived level of effort I planned for IMDE, so not as hard as I would have done a stand alone half I guess. If you are super fit and very experienced I guess you could race it harder.
Do you need some lists or a kick up the arse?
debbo- i was slightly worried about the listless prefix, i feel slightly nervous that carl may try to help me out or something.
Boredom threshold training
What I meant was do you attempt everything at a fast although manageable pace.
All four of your key points Ergo are ones that I will need to address specifically so entering with a view to getting them right first would be most sensible for me. I really struggle already with nutrition on long cycles, and combined with the fact my body does not like running when I have recently eaten I need to put some serious thought into the nutritional side of things.
OW sighting seems to be an artform in its own right. I cant even go 100m in a straight line at the moment.

If you are looking for some OW action then I think both Princes and Datchet will be doing some OW aquathlons early next year...
Whatever else I do next year, Bala is a must for me - love it!
I've done them too, and think that actually they would be good, as I think a 20km time trial for example would be good training as top end speed work, likewise a 5 km run. I definitely missed doing some top end work in Switzerland. Endurance was not an issue, bike power was......
Not worth missing a long weekend workout for, hence why I would pick these on the Monday. Ride there and ride back, and you are laughing!
If you cant recover from a half in 3 weeks youve not been training hard enough.
I say stick with Bala, as already stated its an excellent race and they seemed to warm to us a bit this year. Lots of Rectum Tri peeps were at Austria to.
