Sorry to hear about your calf. How about running in water it's supposed to be good therapy.
  • Options
Physio did suggest that but I don't have access to a pool during the week so he also suggested a cross trainer or stationary bike, today would have been a great day for a run and so many people seem to be out.
  • Options
I havent managed to get out if that makes you feel any better. Hope the weather holds for tomorrow.

Went out for short run last nite, not goodimage

Plantar Fasc. (recurring nightmare) back.  Shins still playing up a bit.  Had to stop no end of times and ended up heading home sooner than anticipated yet again.  Thinking I may to to have a prolonged break to give everything a chance to recover fully.

Have been consolling myself with chocolate (bad, bad BAD).

I know exactly how you feel Doris, save me some chocolate as I've eaten all mine. image

Wasn't yesterday a glorious day.. . was my way.  As I don't work on a monday I took myself out into the beautiful suffolk/essex countryside and did a long walk through fields and meadows via the public footpaths.  Stunning views and the sun warming my face, heaven.   Must have walked a good 7 or 8 miles.

All was well until got in the car to go home; heel so painful I could only just stand it.  Had no problems at the time of walking.  Foot was throbbing the whole journey back (only about 30 mins drive).  Spent ages last nite icing & stretching.  Could have happily cried all evening but didn't want to do that infront of my children

All fine first thing this morning but by the time Id been about for a couple of hours has got v painful again.  Roll on the ice pack! image

Yep the weather's fantastic at the moment.  Met my PT for a run in a woodland park yesterday and it was the best run I've done.  Didn't know the distance or timing, just ran as and when taking walk breaks as I needed.  Really lovely place to run - beats pounding the pavements in town.

Sorry to hear about your heel, Doris.  How annoying to have no trouble while walking, but then flare up afterwards.  Have you tried a physio or podiatrist?  Hubby of a friend of mine went to a podiatrist with same problem recently.  No miraculous overnight fix, but podiatrist provided shoe inserts shaped for him (not generic off the shelf ones), and recommended seeing specialist sports shop for trainers (he doesn't do sports, but podiatrist said they would be able to give him a shoe to help).

Am going to sign up for another duathlon in July.  This one's a bit shorter than the one in April - would have been much better as my first one actually, but that's the way things go.

Still not running.  Feet/heel is killing me.  Can't afford to go to private physio/pod.  Money is so tight right now.  OH is only working basic  as no new work coming in and we've all had to pull our belts in ( might have to let mine out a bit soon due to the amount of chocolate Ive been quaffing!!).

Am due to run a 10K on Good Friday so hoping to ease back into some short slow runs well before then.  Meantime am still constantly icing and massaging and gently stretching.

Sarah, how you doing?  Not seen a post from you for a while, what happening?

  • Options

Doris, I can sympathise perhaps you need to rest.

I was told to rest totally for 2 weeks the only exercise I could do was a X trainer. I am now allowed to jog for 1 min with 1 min walk doing between 6 - 10 reps with 5 minutes walking warmup and cool down. I think these injuries take time and it is easy to do more damage by over doing it.

  • Options

Sorry to hear injuries are still causing problems - such a bummer when the weather is so nice.

I hesitate to say it, but I'm beginning to feel like a jogger (as opposed to a waddler!).  I went out for a walk/jog last Thursday and did 3.8k, the longest distance I'd done so far.  No exercise since then (hubby ill) until tonight when did 4.8k with my trainer.  It didn't feel difficult (hard work yes, but not difficult), and I really enjoyed it.  Always helps when I have someone to chat with!  I won't be breaking any speed records as I'm doing roughly 10mins per km, but at least I'm jogging more now.

Only 3 weeks till my duathlon, and am really starting to look forward to it.

That's really good to hear BG.  You are going to do so well.

Interesting development on the with the ongoing foot/leg saga.  As part of a Fit for Work campaign being run by my employer, reps from a specialist clinic came for the day to give free advice sessions and a chance to have foot analysis done.  Only a quick 10 min taster session but was real eye opener.  I had walk across along a mat half the length of room and scan of feet came up on computer.  Had  various markers on it (pressure points, whether you heel strike, flat footed or high arched etc.. you get the picture)  Anyway turns out that my good foot (left) is perfect neutral with good heel strike.  My problem foot (right) apparently heavily overpronates with another pressure point on outside edge of the foot towards my little toe.

I explained all about my strange aches, pains and weird sensations right up the whole leg and they said something about  the periformis (Googled; to do with compartment in hip, possibly crossing sciatic nerve).  Upshot is that they recommend I seek professional help as could do some serious damage in the future if I keep pushing it.  Sadly, cannot afford their 'professional consultancy' prices so am going armed with all this info when I see my GP on Tuesday.

Haven't been running at all but planning a 'brisk' walking session' tonight as Im going stir crazy stuck indoors.  Chocolate supplies dwindling fast and waistline expanding even faster.  Got a lovely big box of fancy chocs from my sons on Mothers Day and there are only a few left!

  • Options

That's a bit of luck that they came to look work and diagnosed the over pronation, I imagine they will prescribe insoles (sorry I can't think of the technical name), let's hope it helps and then you will be back but enjoy the chocs in the meantime.

I am still taking it easy and building up currently 3 mins with 10 reps must admit though that I just get into the pace and then the watch beeps to walk. Got to start building up with pyramid sessions 1,2,3,4,5 minutes with 1 min walk in between and then back down to 1. I have been given the all clear to enter the 20k for the end of May as I should have built back up by then.

Welldone BG, it feels even better when the weathers nice.

No good.  Attempted brisk walk and had to turn back after about 10 mins.  Burning sensation in my heel and got pins & needles along the sole.   Bag of frozen peas out again.

    image  Am so fed up.

Saw GP last night about my PF problem.  Situation has worsened and have been referred to hospital/physio as urgent case.

Appears that somehow I have also managed a 'pinch' the sciatic nerve.  No back pains but dreadful pins & needles along the right leg, but most of all along the whole of the right sole.  Can walk but only short distance and short time spans.  Can't stand for very long either without the whole leg going into spasm.

GP very sympathetic but could only offer painkillers and anti inflammatories until I get to see the physio.  Its all making me feel quite low really.  Have pulled out of the charity 10k on 10th April.

How's everyone else doing cos I need cheering up!

  • Options

Sorry to hear you're still having problems, Doris.  I do feel for you.  Hope you can get a quick physio appt and start getting somewhere towards resolving it.

I went out for a jog with trainer last night - lovely now the evenings are lighter.  I much prefer jogging as and when I feel able, rather than the strict intervals that I was doing.  I don't seem to be any slower overall.

Have spent this afternoon putting together our towball mounted bike carrier for the car.  Towball is being fitted on Friday, so hopefully try out the bike carrier this weekend.  Really looking forward to being able to load the bikes and go.  Previously had to take front wheels off and wiggle them around to get them in the boot.

Another long run planned with trainer on Friday.  I'm really starting to enjoy jogging now.

  • Options

Really sorry to hear your still having problems Doris hopefully now the GP has referred you as urgent you will be seen soon.

I have been making the most of the lovely evenings and getting out still doing interval training to get back up currently 6 minutes running with 1 minute walk. So far no problems so hopefully on the way to recovery.

Its no good to hear that everyone else is enjoying their running, really it is.

Must admit, today has not been too bad a day.  Managed to walk from the car park to my office (about 6/7 mins walk) at a slow pace and with little discomfort.  Pills have obviously done their job.  Pins & needles minimal and no spasms either.  Not getting my hopes up too much as I know it can change just as quickly.

Today has been lovely here, despite a murky start early on, and I passed a couple of runners as I was driving to the school.  Would love to be out there myself. If I can have a couple more comfortable days like today Im going to try and go for a short walk to get my heart rate up a bit.  Can't bear to do nothing at all.

Bumped into a friend I used to work with (club runner) and he's had PF probs too.  Seems to be this time of year that particular ailment.

BG - did you sort that bike carrier?  And I know what you mean about just running for the enjoyment rather than trying to stick  to a regime.

    Richard - 6 run/walk 1, excellent!

Wonder whats happened to sarah, not posted for ages?

Glad you are keeping your spirits up Doris, I can sympathise with you wanting to get out. Try to resist the urge and be careful not to do any more damage before being referred, it's not easy though especially with the weather improving. At least you should have a fresh supply of chocolates next weekend.

My training is steadily increasing, now on 7 min reps although I have to keep myself from getting the urge to keep going. Have ended up on the stand-by list for the 20k that I was planning at the end of May No 1,057 but who knows out of 25,000 it is less than 5% (am I now in the position of wanting people to get injured? image)

  • Options

Sounds like your training is going well, Richard.  I'll keep my finger crossed for you that 1057 people drop out!

We did sort the bike carrier out and used it properly today, though only to take the bikes to the shop for a service.  Want to make sure my bike is running well before the duathlon - only a week away!!!!  Very pleased with the carrier.  Now got to get DH interested in cycling again so we can go out at weekends.

Still jogging/walking very slowly.  Have done some longish bike rides over past week, plus spinning, and my knees were aching when I went jogging.  Think I need to adjust saddle height.

Long run planned for Friday.  Will be my last long run before the race.  Got some new running gear (absolute bargain from M&S) so am sure I will be faster now image

Hi Everyone Happy Easter how much chocolate has been consumed?

Good Luck for next weekend BG , no stopping you in flash new kit.

I did a 6 miler on Saturday and  no niggles from the calf although my legs did ache all over yesterday (obviously not used to the distance). I need to start building up the miles now and get back up to HM distance again.

How are the legs Doris, have you got an appointment through for the physio yet?

  • Options

Not much choc been consumed here - I've had some, and passed the rest to DH.  There was an Easter raffle at the gym in aid of charity and the prizes where, surprise, surprise, lots of choc.  I wanted to support the charity but didn't want to risk winning chocs, so made a donation instead - how good am I???

Good news on the 6 miler, Richard.  You'll be back to HM distance in no time.

My legs, and tummy, are aching today - I tried yoga yesterday for the first time.  Only 15 mins, but it obviously worked muscles differently cos I really ache.

Got the instructions for the duathlon today.  I find it really amusing that the prize giving takes place at 2pm, when I will still be running!  Start is at 12.30, and I expect to take between 2 and 2.5 hours.  Of course it doesn't matter that the prize giving will be going on while I'm still out there cos I won't be getting any prizes, except maybe for slowest person!

Am trying to taper this week.  Want to keep active but don't want to overdo things.  Last long run was Fri, mid distance run on Monday.  Am going spinning tonight, but will take it easy.  Plan a very short run on Thurs and a gentle cycle on Fri.  If I don't keep active I'll stay indoors and stuff myself silly!

    Hi everyone.

Hope your all well. Sorry i haven't been on for ages but i had a serious lack of motivation after my last injury so i'm back to run/walking but i've been unable to do it on anything other than the treadmill because an extremely hurtful comment from a passerby when out for my first run has really knocked what little confidence i had. Anyway in an attempt to get myself back to somewhere like normal i have entered my local RFL and i'm planning on run/walking it. Hopefully i'll start to feel more positive as the weeks go by.

Sarah, great to have you back on!

So sorry that some insensitive little sh**e has scuppered your efforts. I know its so easily said, but try to ignore such poeple.  At  least you are out there attempting to make a posiitive difference to your health & your life.

As per my past posts Ive been very up & down for a while now.  Latest on the running front is, well, Im not really running at all.  Have had problems with PF (easing off slowly) and also with pinched nerve.

Went for slow run/walk last night.  Was out for 41 mins but only covered around 3 miles, very slowly and with constant stops as the pins & needles and 'hot spots' kicked in.

Heard from referral unit with my 'unique' reference and then had to ring the hospital to arrange convenient physio appt.  What a saga.  Apparently they are inundated with urgent referrals and promised to ring me yesterday with a date.  No call so Im trying again today but the phone is constantly engaged.  Ho hum.  Will keep trying.

Meanwhile, not going to 'run' again for a few days.  Will go out on my bike instead as don't get so many symptoms this way.

  • Options

Nice to see you back, Sarah, and like Doris says, try to ignore the unhelpful people - you are doing something positive.

I had to chuckle at your post, Doris.  You think 41 mins is slow for 3 miles?  I was chuffed to do 2.8 miles in 43 mins the other day.  It's all relative I know, but I'd be pleased to do 3 miles in 41!

Tip with the hospital physio dept - you could ask to be considered for cancellations.  I got a quick appt that way, but it only works if you are close to the hospital really.

Am going to do my last run before the duathlon tonight, just a short 1 mile round the block.

  • Options

Great to have you back Sarah and ignore those ignorant *****. I try and ignore them an think come on then run with me and see how far you get, my guess is not far at all.

Good luck this weekend BG, have fun enjoy the experience and remember PB coming up!!

    Hi all,

Got my date for hospital clinic &physio, can you believe its for 22nd May?!!  Was so disappointed I made an appt and saw a chiropractor yesterday.  He did a very thorough examination and didn't think the problems Ive been having related to my back.  Thinks it may be that my periformis muscle which crosses the sciatic nerve within the thigh/hip socket  has been compressed somehow and this is giving me all the horrible pins & needles , weak leg, hot spots etc.  That was yesterday.

This morning when I woke up I was so sore and very stiff in the lower back.  Already had a follow up appt  booked with my GP for this morning so that was good.  GP thinks the chiropractor may have been a little over zealous (said I would have some discomfort, but this?).  Back has been stiff all day and the pins & needles going like the clappers.  GP sent me up to hospital for an X-ray.  She thinks that possibly the sacroilliac joint has been aggrevated as I wasn't aching there before, but who knows.  X-ray results should be with GP by next Friday and I have to ring her then.  At least Plantar has gone now, thank goodness.  Feel like a complete wreck at the moment.

BG - All the best for your race, go get'em girl!

Thanks for the good wishes guys. Well I made it! Got the medal to prove it! As predicted we (my trainer came with me) were last, by a long way, but it didn't matter - we enjoyed it, the sun was shining, it was a lovely day.

Bit of a stiff breeze though - not a problem when running/walking, but no matter which way you turned on the bike the wind seemed to be in front and made the cycle really hard, when I had hoped that would be the easy bit.

We jog/walked the first lap, then it was 3 laps on the bike, then just walked the last lap. The marshalls were really cheery and nice, and a paramedic on a motorbike rode alongside us to help us along - he even offered to fetch us extra water if we needed it, bless him.

I estimated a finish time of somewhere between 2 and 2.5 hours, and was hoping to be nearer 2.15 than 2.30. Forgot to stop my watch at the finish line, stopped it a minute or so later and it said 2.17, so pleased at that. Accurate times will be on the website tomorrow so will look that up.

All in all a good day and pleasant experience.

The next duathlon is in July and is much shorter. Am aiming to be able to run for longer by then.

Am gonna have a curry tonight - think I've earned it!
  • Options

BG-Hope you enjoyed your curry and what a great time. I forgot to stop my watch after my first HM , must be the excitement.

Doris- How's the back? Here's hoping it is easing off you've certainly been in the wars recently.
