Have had to can a race after 3.5m today as felt really tired and lethargic (sudden onset)...
This is not the first time this has happened and filling in the blanks seems to suggest that whenever I take a caffine boost eith in drink or gel format, my performance drops very quickly, this is the third time I have noticed this.
But as I drink alot of caffinated coffee, I beleive that I may be ODing on caffine when I take an additional gel + or caffine boost drink....
Has anyone had similar issues, or are these just coincidences? Or is there some science behind all this.........
Answers on a postcard please......

Hi,
I have heard that you can get caffeine crash if you drink too much and too early before the event. You should have caffeine about 30 minutes before.
It happens with me sometimes when I feel tired and take a bit too much caffeine. I start to sweat a lot, get shaky, weak feeling in my arms and legs and the heart speeds up.
If I drink coffee without eating something with it, I get a temporary high, but then get symptoms of hypoglycaemia around 30 minutes later.....shaky, dizzy, sometimes sweating, and hungry.
(and I too drink a lot of coffee, mainly in the mornings, so should be quite insensitive to it)
Maybe you were a bit hypoglycaemic.
you can OD on coffee: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wear/6944026.stm
I get hyper if I drink any caffeinated drinks, so I tend to stick with decaff.
You can definitely OD on caffeine.
Details here.
Long ago when a student I did a project looking at the psychological and physiological effects of caffeine in sport. I was using anhydrous caffeien and decided one day to administer a larger than normal dose to myself to see what the effects were.
I can definitely vouch for most of the symptoms listed in the link above - culminating in some of the worse sickness I've ever had - didn't do it again I can tell you that!
Thanks for that Dad of Two, very interesting.
Will now avoid (before running) any addional caffien other that the coffee that I am used too.
M Monkey, dont get me on beans - that causes all sorts of other problems.......
How are you Dustboy?
Havent run with caffine drinks or gels now since last Sat aborted race and havent had any issues as yet, all this science stuff still baffels the living daylights out of me.....
