A question on the GNR

Watching the highlights of the GNR.
One question what is the purpose of the guys with red tops on mountain bikes?
Can't figure out the point of them(about 4 of them?) roads are closed and there is medical help every where so what is the job required of them.
Oh and bobby robson is going to have a sore wrist in the morning!

so not newcastle mountain bike club having a day out?
Sounds good think I may apply for a job doing that.
Didnt seem that they would stop anyone like the lunatic priest of a few years back to be honest.
Was nice looking at the pretty bikes though.
These aren't the blokes on bikes you're talking about, but I thought I'd explain our bikes here in case anyone is wondering. I was running with a couple of seriously disabled guys in wheelchairs. We tried to do as much as we could to keep out of the way of faster runners, sticking to the side of the road, forming a protective cordon round the chairs and letting everyone know we were there and to take care while passing us. We had a couple of blokes on bikes behind us - they not only provided a bit of advance warning, but more importantly were carers for one of the guys we were pushing, and were carrying medical kit with them for him.
I'm pleased to say that almost everyone who saw us cheered us on rather than whingeing about us being in the way (we were trying not to be!), because as someone who normally runs faster than I did yesterday I was conscious that we're only able to do something like that as long as we don't p*ss people off and take part responsibly.

I think the wheelchair guys are great.
