Sad, sad news. I dipped into this thread now and then and always Doug's positive nature, humour and optimism shone through, as well as the high regard and esteem in which he was held.
I have cried and wailed, BD has been stressed and worried and BD and I have been through a rough few months health wise but we are alive, not a heaven believer but bless you Douglas and all those people who knew and loved you
Such sad news..........rest easy Doug - it's been a privalege to share your journey, albeit from afar. All thoughts with your friends and family who have lost such a special man.
From Douglas's ward- was with him when he died with his family by his side-he wanted everyone to know how all the postings meant so much to him- I have printed them out and read them to him up to yesterday- he was touched by the kindness and thoughts of all.
Well done ,you persuaded many to post messages who scarcely know what a pc is.You and Doogle were at Pirbright together and it's fitting that you were there at the end and I know that you made considerable personal sacrfices to be there. Thanks.
Jeannie,
You've been the unsung and unacknowledged heroine in this saga and, again many thanks.
Your courage this last year has been an inspiration to all. As Rupert said - a privilege to have known and served with you.
Runners, bridge friends, business colleagues, Hertfordshire friends - and staff, and of course the Regiment will miss you. All others too who have known you only on this blog - they know what an example you have been.
Thank you all for your wonderful support for Dougal this year. He and I go back a long way (he came to my 4th birthday party in 1958!) but I hadn't seen him for a while and didn't hear about his illness until very late. It is comforting to know that so many kind and generous friends were with him to the end.
I do so agree with all you have said - Billy and Dougal go back a long way as of course you and Dougal do and it must have been a comfort for Dougal to see Billy today. Jean has been an outstanding support to Douglas throughout his long and at times very difficult journey.
Dougal loved this site and as Jean said earlier in one of her posts it gave so much pleasure to Dougal to read and latterly be told about all the many supportive messages to him ,
I spoke to Dougal this morning and told him about the many new messages that he had been sent and that Rupert had posted two army photos ..........he listened and probably smiled
Dougal you are now at peace and this is the most important thing
Signing off now as just a tad too emotional to continue writing
Douglas, Very sorry to hear you are not with us any more - fond memories of Berlin - thank God you are no longer in pain and can look down on us all with a wry smile
Billy, I'm so glad, for both your sakes, that you were able to get over and be with Douglas yesterday. Thank you for the smiles you have brought to this thread.

Thank you, Douglas. And to his family and friends.....I will always find it hard to feel sad when I think of him and will think of him of him often.
