I entered back in December and my race number, 73, came through a couple of weeks ago.
I've done several 10k's but this will be my first 10 miler. My longest run has been 8.2 miles (1hr 10) through the relatively hilly Blean woods. I'm just going to take it nice and slow see how it goes.
If it goes well I'm probably going to enter Canterbury Half in May.
I run up there most Saturday mornings. It is really good having so many miles of varied tracks to go on. You should have no trouble doing the extra 1.8 if you can do sub 9 minute miles for that distance. The Canterbury Half is a good race but has one extremely nasty hill at the ten mile mark.
Sunday was my first time in Blean woods and I really liked it. I live in Chartham so usually run through the Downs but this was the first time I had ventured over to Blean. We followed the route for the Black run which my Garmin measured as 8.2 miles. It was so slippy in places and a couple of times my foot was completely submerged - it was all good fun though
I noticed a group of runners there on Sunday morning. Do you know who they are? I guessed they might be part of Canterbury Harriers or Invicta East Kent.
Is the hill in Canterbury 10 worse than the two hills at the end of the black run in the woods then?
I don't run through the woods, I stick to the Crab and Winkle cycle way, and the large circular track which comes up to the Clowes Wood car park. Just thinking about it, I am probably confusing Blean Woods with Clowes Wood.
I park in the Clowes Wood Car Park. Just next to it there is a gravel path which runs round in a 2.2 mile loop. It joins the Crab and Winkle cycle track which then goes off up to Blean Church, up past the Uni playing fields and pops out at Kent College. From the Car Park to Kent College is about four miles. For a bit of variation you can go down the cycle track in the opposite direction towards the Thanet Way, go over it and stop when you reach the road and then go back, that adds about another 1.5 miles. Also, if you want to pile on the miles you can go round the loop a couple of times. Lots of variations which helps stop it getting boring!
I can tell the black route will be great in the summer. It was so wet on Sunday though I spent a lot of the time making sure I didn't lose a shoe or my footing!
I might be venturing back this Sunday if we don't get too much rain this week...
kerboing! I ran a reasonable time at Dartford yesterday. Last year I was a couple of minutes slower at Canterbury than Dartford the previous weekend. I'm hoping to turn that around this year.
What did you manage in the end? I knew I had no chance of PBing at Dartford so was happy to do just under 1h45. i was treating it as part of my training for FLM. Nice to meet you on Sunday and put face to name.
Yikes, I can only run a few hundred yards at that kind of pace and that would need to be downhill. Mind you I am a fair number of years older than you, so that's my excuse!
ive never done this one before,it was a bit hilly for my liking, but a nice course,i wish i could of took in the scenery a bit more though.
i though it was well organised and the pa at the start and finish was informative and knowledgable.
one minor niggle though,we had to wait a while before we could get out of the car park,on the otherhand though,at least we had some where to park,so i cant complain.

Hiya CB, was quite funny when the penny dropped
I got under 1:17, only a minute slower than last year (I can live with a 6 second per mile loss of pace).
Thanks to the organisers and all the marshalls today and well done to all the racers.
It was a really enjoyable race.
