It's my first time too!!  And I will be happy to just get round but worried about that! How's everyone's training going?  I'm running 3 times a week at the mo but that's only been for a couple of weeks and will add a long run into that too soon.

Have given up the booze too, which has been tough but will be even tougher over Christmas!

I think I'll be joining this thread! I have ambitions of just being in one piece when I finish!! - at the moment I'm seriously fed up with my plantar fasciitis - grrr! First FLM followed 6 weeks after by first Edinburgh (yikes!) image

Great, not just me then! I run three times a week, two of 5/6 miles then a long one at the weekend - I also swim twice a week, about 2 miles each session. Am doing the FLM for charity (Spinal Research) as I am 40 next year and for years have said 'I want to do that' everytime I watch it on TV!

My aim is simply to get round without having to resort to walking, but I am a VERY slow runner. I took it up to lose weight and have lost lots but I have another 3 stone to lose...hope it will have gone by FLM!

Doing the Thanet 10 tomorrow - and the forecast is strong winds and heavy rain, and it is along the seafront! Wish me luck!

Good luck for tomorrow! My training is so far been erratic but I am determined to go out tomorrow (unless it rains in which case I shall jog around the living room lol)

Good luck Schmaggle!  Let us know how it goes.

Sounds like you've got a great training schedule sorted.  fbgf - me too I didn't make it out today so must go tomorrow!

    Hi everyone

deedee I too have alot of problems with pf in both feet.I seemed to develope it training for the windermere marathon this year and eventually had to pull out,I had acouple of months off then ran the GNR this sept with just a few light niggles so ive trained lightly for the last month or so and will try to build up gradually and touch wood get round the FLM.

    Hi there!

Nice to know there are some other snails out there.

I'll be a first timer in April. I've done a couple of 10ks last year, but nothign spectacular. I've estimated my finish at 5.5 hours. Just got to get my asthma controlled long enough to get round - just when I think I've cracked it, it rears it's ugly head and I'm back at square one.

    Oh well, slow and steady..

    Good luck Shmaggle!
Hi Spongenut! I developed the problem back in April. I've managed to get back out running after having 4 months off, done a few 10 milers (cabbage patch 10 and Great South Run) and a half (St. Neots) - I had no problems but it came back after a long slow run last weekend... I wasn't happy!!

Will be at Luton mara tomorrow as I'm part of a relay team (8 and a bit miles), I think we might get quite a bit of rain!! image

Good luck to all that are running tomorrow (and take it easy Spongenut, fingers crossed for you!)

I've been thinking about jumping in on the sub 5 thread but this one looks more my level.  This will be my 5th marathon but first London (5 rejects place) and my mara pb is 5:45.  I'd love to do sub 5:30 but I find keeping up with the training so hard to do.  I can do a HM in 2:23 and I'm quite addicted to them but getting the mileage past 15 without getting injured is something I havent managed to do yet and always end up doing run/walk.

How did you get on at Luton today DD?  I was there supporting hubby who did the whole thing and it was FREEZING.  He got his 2nd worse time ever.

Michael - I found that regular running/plodding helped my asthma no end.  I don't use an inhaler at all now so best of luck, keep at it and it wil pay dividends.

Haven't run at all this weekend but did an easy 10 miles last week.  Plan to get out tomorrow and then 2 more days in the week depending on the dreaded weather.  I don't mind a bit of rain but absolute downpours in the wind isn't my idea of fun.  Then got the Hogs Back race on Sunday (8ish miles).

    Good luck everybody.

    Hiya Soup Dragon!

Yeah Luton was freezing wasn't it? - I did the first leg so I had the enjoyment of being started off with all the marathon runners... they're bloomin' fast! I managed the first leg (8 and a bit miles) in 1 hour 16, so not as fast as I would've liked (I like to imagine I can run faster than I really can ha ha ha!|) but I kept running and I think I should be happy with that!! (despite the weather tempting me not to!!). I have absolute admiration for the runners that did the full course, to go through the weather that we got on the first leg and then to keep going for another 2... well, they're amazing n my book!

    Shmaggle - how was Thanet?

Well, off to bed, had to get up at some ridiculous hour this morning to get to Luton - good old Thameslink (oops First Capital Connect) wasn't running through my part of London!), no running tomorrow - it's off to the gym.. who's joining me?

    Night night

Hi folks! Thanet was HARD!!! Something to do with the hailstones and the 50mph winds, and it is along the sea wall so of course lots of seaweed etc!!  I wanted to stop and cry at 5 miles when the wind nearly knocked me over, and get a marshall to take me to the finish!

BUT I did it...last or nearly last I think, but I am used to that! I did it in just over 2 hours so I was actually quite pleased given the conditions.

Until I found out that the winner did it in 55 Minutes!! WHAT!!

I then decided that I am not up to doing a marathon and that I am kidding myself. However, once I got the feeling back in my frozen wet feet in the afternoon I changed my mind...and of course by today I had already decided I would do the Thanet 10 again next year but try to do it faster!

How did everyone else get on at the weekend? 'Hogs Back' sounds interesting!

Do you all follow a training plan or do you plan your own? I am wondering about using the Smartcoach facility on here for the marathon? Any opinions?

Well Done schmaggle!  I'm not sure I could even run 10 miles at the moment, let alone in 2 hours!!  I am having wobbles at the moment  about doing it!  Oh well pledge is in and have started the fundraising!  Have managed 2 runs and a spinning class so far this week and am planning a long run at the weekend!  How's everone else doing?!

    Hello All

Think I might join you lot here

I too am a 5-times-reject who is finally in in 2008.  Have done other marathons with a PB of 4 hrs 48 but have done not a lot for the last couple of years due to an op, putting on a shedload of weight and general CBA.....

Shmaggle - glad you enjoyed the Thanet 10 - I'm a Thanet Roadrunner but very sensibly opted for my usual post of late entries person  image  The chap who won was disappointed with his time - can you imagine it?

Hello again Soup Dragon - all ready for Saturday night's instalment  (PS on the other thread I last posted as Podds La Fenice!!)

Originally I hoped to have a sub-5 run for FLM but the way the last couple of months have gone it's looking unlikely and I am currently struck down with the dreaded monster cold lurgy which is doing the rounds and feeling very sorry for myself!!!!

Hi Podds - recogised your picture (I often change my name on here - great fun).

Shmaggle, I would strongly recommend a training schedule but choose one that suits you and don't be scared to alter it a bit.  There are a few on this site of course but if you also go onto the big marathon sites they also have different training plans.  I'm using one from the New York marathon this time because the long runs increase every 2 weeks with a lesser on in between which I hope will prevent the injuries I've had in the past.  Its difficult on your first because you don't know how you'll feel when the training gets more intense so its a good idea to choose 2, starting with an easier one and you can easily swap to a harder program if you feel up to it and then swap back if you're having a tough week etc.  I always find one that gives me miles to do instead of a fixed running time as well because I'm so slow.

If this is your first marathon just enjoy it and rest assured its a great atmosphere at the back end of a marathon.  Same medal at the end as well!

     I can't wait, so excited.

Thanks for that advice- will have a look around the different plans. Hard to imagine running so long a distance at the mo - half marathon (GNR) my longest race so far!

I am excited too...just trying to plan my fundraising at the mo. Have too much to do!

And a question for Podds - are you going to do the Thanet 20?

  • Options
Yep - I'll be tail-end-charleying which is basically an excuse for being last which was going to happen anyway!!
  • Options
So if I do enter you will be escorting me round, then!

Yay did my 10K today despite feeling a bit crap this morning!  Pretty poor time of 1hr 1 mins but the only way is up right!! woop woop
  • Options

    Plodalot,
1 hour and 1 minute is definitely not a poor time!!! Don't be so down on yourself!!! image

I did a 4 mile cross country this afternoon - had no idea how I did - all I know is I was among the last to finish image

Be proud of what you achieved - you got out and ran, millions of others sat on their behinds and didn't even think of running!

Well done plodalot. Where was it and how was the weather? 1hr 1min is a great time for a first 10k.  My first 10k was an awful 1:18 (next to last)  and my pb to date is 1:03.

I think I'll be last or near-last at the Hogs Back race tomorrow - the thread is talking about "slow" 10-min milers (I wish!).

  • Options

Well done Plodalot - that's not a bad time for 10K by any means!!  And well done for getting out there Deedee

Good luck for tomorrow Soup Dragon - I've ducked out of the race I was supposed to be doing (Ditton Turkey Trot) as my heavy cold has morphed into something more unpleasant......I think it was when on Friday morning I found myself on the cliff tops at 6am telling my greyhound that my head was floating out to sea and we'd better go get it whilst having completely lost my labrador that I decided bed might be a better option than work and also realised that my "training schedule" was going to take a heavy hit  image

Schmaggle - it will be my honour to escort you round the 20 -  always assuming I can keep up with you!!! image

This will be my team if I make it to the start of training

Currently nursing a sore knee - I've set myself the 1st January to get it right.

Lo Beanzie - lovely to see you  imageimageimage

Crikey - I'd be having a GREAT day if I managed 10 minute miles!

And well done on that 10k time...I'd be delighted with that!

Let us know how the Hogs Back goes, great name! Anyone else doing the Kent Christmas Cracker at Deal next Sunday?

  • Options
OH NO!!! I meant 1 hr 15 minute not 1h1 min!! poo.. Would be impressed with that too,,,,,  Have to say though went out tonight to celebrate (I;m off the booze except  two or three designated nights) and am feeling quite rough and a bit tipsy.  Am really loving getting into a proper schedule though so am feeling a bit more confident.  Hope you're all havng a good weekend. xxxx

0319???? Plodalot - you must be a "young thing"!!

Am sorry not to be running this morning as it is currently glorious outside and I was scheduled to do about 10 miles but as breathing is still an issue I thought it wise not to go!!  Have strolled for an hour and a half with the dogs and pals and their dogs though so at least got some fresh air

Hope you're all having lovely runs / races and the weather is ok for you too

    Morning

I've been sitting in bed, reading Sam Murphy's book

It is just the right tone for us I think - if someone wants to know what to buy you for Christmas - you could do worse than ask for this (Podds she was at TP - do you remember?)

Thought I recognised the name Beanz - she seemed very approachable and down to earth which is more what we need than flash stuff I feel!
  • Options

She has two levels of training - depending on your starting fitness (my BMI suggests I shouldn't be doing it at all image but my RHR is in the best range image)

And then three 16-week schedules depending on how much time you can commit - you can swap between schedules if you suddenly have more (or less) time.
