  • Hey Trogs,

Just managed to get back on RW after a bit of an absence - I have a new job and it's a lot busier than my last place!

Glad to hear you are in - I'm not yet but will get round to it at some point. Entry for the POrt of Tauranga HIM openes next week and I don't know how much that will be. It will probably be a third of the IM cost but it's still twice as much as other HIMs. Got to do it though as it's the only qualifying race for the worlds.

Weather here is sh*te. Today we have had electric storms followed by sunshine, followed by heavy winds and rain, followed by sunshine. Forecast for the weekend isn't good either and I have to do a 5hr bike ride and 2hr run eek.

  • Hi Ally, good to see you back here again.  How's the training going?  According to plan I hope.  Guess it's winter for you now with weather to match; electric storms don't sound good thoughimage.    I'm hoping our winter this year will be mildish since that's when I'll be doing most my training.

Have frightened myself silly reading all the IMFR reports; beginning to wonder wether this was such a good idea after allimage

  • Ally - what's the total climb on the bike?

    How's you?

  • Spooky you should ask that now Jaggy, was just looking at the bike profile
  • It's hard to tell the total climb - Austria was about 2000m - I suppose I'm thinking about the comparison. Also looking at it being an out and back course the wind could be a major factor as it was last year I think.

I've started to plan my training so I'm a bit more focussed. The winter training will be a joy eh! Although probably no worse than March and April in scotland!

    Tour of the Surrey Hills

    Total Distance = 109km

    Total climb: 1831m : Total descent: 1823m

Will that be enough practice?  image

    Hi Troggs

Only just seen this thread. Your training sounds like it's going great. didn't realise just quite how much you were doing from our chat on Friday. I've never done Box Hill twice on a bike ride although Bear and me have a route that incorporates Box Hill, Banstead and Epsom downs which can be quite hilly !!! If Happy Chap is unavailable to shout at you up Box Hill and it's not too early I'd love to do a training ride with you - I'm slow too !!!! I've kind of lost my mojo a bit as I'm not running and it would be great to have some company.
  • Yo Green Eyes! Happy to join up with you; my time is fairly flexible so I'm sure we can come to an arrangement, specially since I see you're thinking about OlyCHimage

    Happychap - no comment!

Did Beaulieu sprint tri this morning and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Was a beautiful morning, bright but not too hot and yesterday's blustery winds had abated somewhat.  Start was a bit delayed from some reason so a lot of standing around in the wettie however, after fairly comprehensive safety briefing I waded into the river in the first wave of swimmers. Oddly waves were done by race number rather than time/age group so a real mixed batch.  Had a good swim, started pretty much at the back and passed quite a few swimmers on the out leg then round the buoy and back again still going well.  Out of the water and jogged the 400 metres uphill to transition and managed to half remove wettie on the way.

Bit of a slow T1 then out on a really nice bike route.  Couple of short hills early on then a 6 mile most flat road across Beaulieu Heath where there was enough wind to slow me down a bit but not enough to make it a struggle.  Rest of the route had some gentle slopes and narrow roads but fortunately I didn't encounter any ponies in the road or local mad drivers. Had to take a quick leap into the bushes about 2/3rds of way round though and felt much better for it.  Marshals on the road junctions were great, telling you if road was clear or not.

Quickly through T2 and out onto run which started with 400m downhill onto the river footpath.  According to Garmin I did first mile in 8.28 which was a bit of a surprise.  Run was out and back and had some very gentle undulations.  Felt pretty strong though did slow a bit.  Did manage to resist temptation to stop to talk to two labrador puppies at water station o return leg and finished relatively strongly up that hill again.

Not sure what total time was but somewhere just over 2hrs I think.  Would've liked to get under 2 but what the heck,  it was funimage

  • And the free bacon buttie and cup of tea after the finish went down extremely well!

    Well done Trogs, great result

Looks like the training is paying off.

<I'm sure Green Eyes might be pursuaded to go loooooooooooooooooong at CH - do your best image>

  • Good work Trogs,

Weather here was a bit of a shocker on the weekend so instead of riding outside (in gale force winds and rain) for five hours I did 2.5hrs on the trainer, watching the first series of Outrageous Fortune on DVD (cool NZ drama about a white trash family). Bum hurt afterwards!

Had a two hour run to do on Sunday and did 1:50 in less wet and windy conditions but equally gnarly.

All is good down here, except I am living apart from my new husband. My new job is 110km away from home and instead of spending 90mins driving each way and spending a fortune on gas I'm living with friends during the week. Only get to see Casey on the weekend, the good thing about riding the trainer was he could be in the same room and he rode his bike while I ran on Sunday.

There's not much climbing at IMNZ Jaggy, well, the course profile that Trogs found should help. There's a mean hill near the start of the bike (and you hit it twice) and there's a couple of other hills of note on the return. The run is also undulating but nothing major, just little bumps.

I can't wait for winter to be over! The temps not too bad, about 14C, but we've had some chilly winds this past week and lots of rain, which sucks.

Anyway, my training for the week looks like this:

Monday: Circuits, one set, swim 3km

Tuesday: 90mins indoor trainer (two episodes of Outrageous Fortune - I have the first two series on DVD, not watched it before so catching up). Core exercises

    Wednesday: swim 3km, run 45mins

    Thursday: bike/run 3 x 20min bike 10min run

    Friday: 2.5km swim, core exercises

    Saturday: 3hr bike

    Sunday: 1:30 run, core exercises.

  • Temps the same as Edinburgh then Ally!image
  • Ha ha and we're in midwinter! Could be worse, I could live south of Tauranga and then it starts to get cold.

I'm full of cold now. BUT my new frame has arrived!! Cervelo P3, previously owned by Jo Lawn eek. Just got to build it up and hope some of her talent rubs off.

And scrap the training plan I posted up there. Did my MOnday sessions but have been told to take the rest of the week off to recover.

  • Hope the cold doesn't hang around too long ABB - though maybe long enough to let you sort out the necessary bits to your famous new frame so you can get out an ride it image

No ill effects from Sunday's race and thinking about it, since I had absolutely no probs with bike/run transition and haven't done any brick sessions, I guess I wasn't working hard enough on the bike.  I'm sure that'll be rectified in the very near future if HC has her way.

Had a really good swim session last night, felt really quite strong on most of the drills and no longer half drown doing single arm stuff.  Only thing I really struggle with now are kick drills but since I tend not to use my legs at all when swimming I'm not that bothered.

Should've been out on the bike today but moring appointment overran so not enough time between that and pm commitment.   The worst thing about that is that the people I was supposed to be meeting didn't show up so I could've gone out after all.  Might have to get on the turbo for a bit later on.

  • I broke my finger crashing my mtb during an off road tri at the weekend so I suspect I'll be out of bike action for a few days or weeks - seeing specialist tomorrow cos its a funny break (not that I laughed!)
  • Ouch image

So that's two out of three of us out of action - must be my turn next image

Wanders into the thread humming 'Climb EVERY Mountain'...

Good swimbling this morning Trogs - was a tad worried about all the tummy rumbling afterwards though.

Now, where did I put my Oxygen mask for tomorrow hmmmmm....

  • Ok so Operation We Love Hills has started.

This involves coach Happychap suggesting routes with more uphill than down, banning use of granny ring, cycling behind me yelling at me to keep pushing, then freewheeling along on the downhills while I'm pedalling like fury to maintain the same pace.

Have to admit, without the yelling there are several times I just would've eased up considerably.

Must remember I'm supposed to be training not going out for a picnic!

    Thanks coachimage

  • Ok, so few days off due to family stuff in Bath area means I've done more training already this week than in the whole of last week.  Slightly concerned that while driving around to various places last week, I found myself thinking of all hills in terms of bike training.  I'm sure that's not normalimage

Swim training with tri club last night total 2000m which is a first.  Usually only manage about 1800m so things must be getting better.

This morning did a little brick session.  Gently undulating bike, about 18m, followed by a 3m run.   Ride not made easier by headwind for much of the route.  Why is it that wind always changes direction as I go around so it's always in my face?  On the plus side, last time I did this route average speed was 14mph, today was 14.9mph so while still relatively slow, average pace is improving.  Run felt really slow, particularly at start but average pace was around 10m/m so was pleased with that too.

All in all, a satisfactory days training.

  • Three laps of Heron this morning.

It was wet(!), took slightly longer than anticipated, goggles started leaking for some reason and I got taken by surprise by a mega raindrop which plopped into the water just in front of me and did a slow motiony type splash.
    http://www.emergingorchard.org/images/raindrop%20in%20pool.jpg

Water wasn't quite that colour thoughimage
  • Hmph! Not a good day.

Started well enough - was expecting rain and had accordingly planned speed session on good, wide road in place of our usual Thursday morning back lane hillfest.  Woke up to blue skies which was a pleasant surprise.  Set off on bike to meeting place and hit 4 out of 5 sets of traffic lights on red.  Should've taken that as an omen.  Happychap waiting in car park so quick discussion about target for session, then made to .  Car coming uphill, made to stop and wait, didn't unclip in time, keeled over.  Happychap managed not to laugh and helped me disentangle myslef from bike and off we went.

First two 'laps' went without problem apart from my quads protesting loudly.  Then on return leg of third lap an unfamiliar thud type sensation - flat rear tyre.  No probs, had all necessary stuff to rectify including a yet to be tried CO2 thingy.  Changed tube easily, though it did take a silly amount of time, attached co2 cannister to inflator, applied to valve, pushed and, quick as a flash, nothing happened.  Release mechanism was stuck so had to revert to hand pump.  By the time I'd sorted it all we were out of time so headed for home (more red lights).

Decided I needed coffee before walking hounds.  Kettle's a bit spaz and doesn't always turn off; reached out to switch it off without really thinking and put arm straight over steaming spout leading to severe outbreak of Tourettes.  Spent next 10 minutes with arm under cold tap.

Dogs safely walked, patched tyre and contributed to co2 pollution by discharging cannister to atmosphere before unjamming inflator.  Sat down to do some adminy type stuff, catch up on forums etc and laptop refused to start.  Nearly thru it across room but couldn't be bothered so just turned it off/on till it surrendered and decided to play.

Waking up after falling asleep in my chair for 3hrs made me think that perhaps I need to pay more attention to my eating habits. In retrospect, I've probably not done enough of that this week which could be a contributory factor to falling off, taking ages to change tyre and kettle moment.

    Tomorrow will be better.

Trog - it's best to find these nutrition things out at this stage though, rather than 80 miles into a 100 mile ride in january

hope your next ride is less eventful though ; - )

  • Yes Jaggy it was; mostly cos I didn't actually do anything except nurse my quite impressive bruises - oh and eat quite a lot!

Running has been a bit neglected recently but did a 5mile race this morning in a less than impressive time.  Enjoyed it though, on the whole.

With Vit now just 8 weeks away I need to concentrate mostly on the bike, but increase my running a bit too.  Happy that I can do the swim without problems.  Thinking I'm going to aim for 2 swims, 4 bikes and 3 runs per week.

Apparently you can add one more actually training for an IM now image

  • Hey Trogs,

Your training sounds like it's coming on a treat - you will be a machine in Taupo!

My cold has subsided (at long last) and this morning I went for my first run in a fortnight. It was a bit slower than normal and my heart rate was still a bit high but I felt awesome to be out there again.

Swimming is a bit slower too (though by mere seconds) but the bike is okay.

I have got my new bike now, just need to swap my seat over and get it set up then I'll be able to whiz around Tauranga on it. It's a compact so something new for me to get used to.

  • Hi Ally, that was some cold!  Glad you've finally managed to shake it off; you'll be back up to speed in no time.

Meant to go out for a (relatively) long ride today but somehow got tied up doing other stuff.  Had a good swim session with the tri club last night though.  And have a trip to Heron lake in the morning to look forward to.

And with that in mind I'd best head off to bed or I'll oversleep again  image

  • Good swim at Heron this morning.  2 long laps and a slightly shorter one cos it felt like my stroke was technique was failing a bit towards end.

    Gentle run this evening.

And Happychap has planned something evil for the bike tomorrowimage
