  • HENCEFORTH THE WORD 'WEATHER' IS BANNED IN ALL FORUM CORRESPONDANCE!!!

You might 'get away with' running in road shoes but we really recommend multi terrain. The ground is perfect for running on most of the course, soft underfoot, fairly flat & quite springy but it is a bit rutted in places as one might expect mid Wales with lots of sheep,  streams, the odd tractor and millions of years of mountain forming going on!!  If y'all visit www.hayhotfooters.co.uk and go to the Magic Roundabout page you can see the pictures and judge better what you think of the terrain, as we've had a few enquiries. If any of you are local and can think of anyone, we also need marshalls (we're ok but you can never have enough). Free bacon butty and a joyous experience to be had by all. We've also sourced gorgeous local ciders for after the event.

As to other question regarding supporters - the Begwyns is in an 'open' environment, so quite exposed. Now I've banned myself from using the 'W' word I can't really explain it so well, but lets say if it is sunny/fair/not raining all supporters will be fine. And even if it is not, we'll have 2 marquees for little ones to shelter in if needs be (along with the Band!!) Hope this helps, Cat

  • Thanks PinguPongu and Cathy for your replies. May have to look at the forecast for the Wea.........aarggghhh! Sorry! Just caught myself!
  • It is lovely and warm and sunny today image
  • So there might be mud????imageimageimageimage

  • Sending Dougal up there tomorrow to do a mud survey...
    Watch this space.
  • even after last years downpour there wasn't much mud to worry about so don't worry hashette!!

  • Do you know what? My favorite time to run is in bleak, rainy, muddy or snowy stuff. You can start off all wrapped up and and up in shorts and a crop top (well I do!). Its that feeling of pitching oneself against the elements, bringing out the fighting spirit we all know exists deep down but does not suface until challenged.. Do you know we generate the same heat  when running as a one bar electric fire? (research shows!) It is also down to these factors, that I am convinced, brings runners closer than many other sports. Who can achieve the same common denominators in the face of adversity, in a smooth, shiny hall say?! NAY!! I KNOW YOU FEEL IT TOO!!

So grit your collective teeth, come on over to this race, and all we have prepared to entertain you (lots), join us for a drink at the beer tent on site, with the band serenading your efforts, and then later, if you like at the BASKERVILLE hotel and then truck on down to enjoy the Literary Festival with thousands of other satisfied customers for their 21st year!! Its heaving with things to see/do. We just want you to be happy!

You never know, we might even have perfect conditions (see, I still didn't use the W word). Cat

  • Absolutely! Some of the races I've done celebrate the fact they will be muddy and great fun they are too. I've run on the Begwyns in all conditions and it is always the best place I've ever run, it never ceases to amaze me how stunning the surroundings and varied the terrain and I feel so lucky to have it on my door step. It will be great to share this special place with everyone who signs up and turns up to do 'The magic roundabout' We've been working extremely hard to make it a cracking event and one you will remember to put in your diary for next year.

  • Don't think I'm going to be racing! have come down with a rather minging cold and haven't done nearly enough training, though am still coming for the social etc,

COuld someone be kind enough to mail me with some directions and how much is the campsite?

    Ta

  • I'm in two minds about it.  I'm only just getting over a chest infection and have done no proper training in weeks.  I did a 5k in boiling heat today and would have welcomed some rain... LOL...  if I had to do10k in this weather I'd have passed out!!!  I've been so poorly I can barely do 5k now and I'm not confident I can double my distance in a fortnight.....  At the same time I think I've already entered it and don't like to waste a place...  I'll just have to see how I'm doing for the next couple of weeks.  image
  • sounds like you've had a rough time of it Nam image

I haven't coughed up any money yet, I've been so busy with work and moving!

I'll see how I do over the next fortnight

  • ok now confused looked at the link on the first page about the camp site, but seen there was talk of another venue,

so I'll ask the numpty question.....where are we camping and how much?

  • Tangerine Fields Dave

Can't remember how much - must check it out myself!

  • We were going to do a camp site with Kev the farmer, but then it was decided to use the Tangerine Fields site (well the runners did), as it is closer to town. This is prob just as well as we have enough onfor this year! The link on first page will take you there. Prices seem to start at £5 for kids £10 for adults

All postal applications will be sent back very soon with maps, directions, race details etc. For all this and more  you can also visit the web site www.hayhotfooters.co.uk. Ta. Cat

PS. I won the bet on how many runners we'd have last year!!! (thats running on the day NOT applying) Who wants to start the bidding? Tenner for the winner on me! Clues: Last year we had 95 in atrocious conditions (as i think we have pretty much firmly established)!

Place your bets 'ere ladies and gents!!image

  • Thanks Cathy, I'll book that this week,

who's arriving when? Thinking of heading down friday eve,

  • Dougal says;
'Nother sniff round that 10k course with himself on Sunday; bit warm when you've a coat like mine but cooled the belly in a few pools - the ford was about deep enough to drown a cat, if you've got one. S'not muddy like last time, a few places to damp the paws but himself just jumped over them, stride like a lurcher that one! Grass is nice 'n short 'n springy - smells of sheep though, but they don't hang around when they meet me; got a good eye you see!
Bloody skylarks still bouncing up all over the place and some cuckoo adding to the din, just don't appreciate we go there for a bit of peace on a Sunday morning! Still, at least he took me for a good lie down in the pub afterwards!
  • Sorry, but me and Blouse can't make this one now.

Dave, we've paid for the camp site and each have a race number.  E-mail me if you haven't already booked and I'll send you our booking details so that you can have the place instead.  The money's not refundable as far as I know, and I'd be much happier if you had it than if it just went to waste.  I'll send you Blouse's race number when it comes through if you let me have your address, and if anyone wants mine then just let me know.

  • Thanks Hash,

shame you 2 can't make itimage, I've messaged you as you don't seem to email enabled,

  • That's odd, e-mail should be enabled.  Anyway, not to worry, got your message Dave and I've e-mailed you back
  • Please don't pass on race numbers as it invalidates race insurance if people are running under different names and makes it very confusing for the timekeepers and registration volunteers. I'm sure if any of you have been involved in organising races you'll know it's hard enough...sorry to sound a bit gruff but it's really important. Sorry you can't make it.......hopefully next year!

    Jo

    (time keeper and registration secretary!)

  • Ooops, sorry Jo.  Is it okay if we do it officially?

  • Hi Hashette,

Unfortunately all the numbers have been asigned and enveloped, at it all day and night. We would be more than happy to defer your places til next year. Let us know by email and we'll note that next year your booked in with no fee if you want to do it.

Numbers should be with you Friday...just dispose of them and get back in touch next year and we'll issue you new ones.

    Cheers

    Jo

PS Big thanks to all who have booked so far! It makes it all worth while!

  • And judging by amount of entries looks like it is going to rock!! Cat
  • Jo, that's unbelieveably lovely of you, thank you so much.

It's unlikely I'll be there next year, it would have been very much a one-off because a forum social is being organised.  I live it Cambridge, so it's a bit of a long trot otherwise.

I'll e-mail you when the numbers come through to let you know what they are. Please just re-allocate them to someone else, I'll put them back in the post when I get them.  I'd far rather they got used than went to waste if the race gets full.

Hope it's a great day and that the weather fairy is kind to you allimage

  • This is going to be my first race since a major injury (skiing rather than running) so I am really looking forward to it with completing the course being the object. If you see someone running in an irish dancer fashion please avoid my right shoulder.

fingers cross for the weather as well but to be honest I'll be there whatever it does

  • The Magic Roundabout last year was a high-light of my life, let alone year!  I never dreamt I could run 10 km, but thanks to family support, and the Arctic conditions,  I just had to keep running to the bitter end.

Now I'm getting too old for this sort of high jinks, but you pre pensioner youngsters do enrol, this is a fantastic race on top of the Welsh world, a day you won't forget.  I shall be going as a spectator, because I don't want to miss the fun.

  • Quick question, how many are staying sunday? as the Monday is the Bank Holiday, so I was planning to head home on the monday. I presume there will be some form of socialising pre and post race...

  • JD: I'll be staying elsewhere with family, so will be there for the race then shooting off.
  • This will be the first time I've done the MR, and I don't know the area so well (looking fwd to it it looks lovely!). Driving up from Cardiff on the day. Can anyone tell me how long it will take to drive so's we know when to leave Cardiff?

  • Bally hell Galloping -  thought I was up late!! Allow 2 1/2 hours I reakon to be there in good time. You might like a second opinion though - I tend to live on a thewire!! Lok forward to meeting you. Welcome on board!

Jungle Dave - There is a great catering wagon (unusual food) before the race, and we'll be providing local cider (3 types) after the race! After that we'll be going to the Baskerville Arms (head to Hay via Clyro, take a left in Clyro, indicated), then the world is your oyster in Hay - it'll be heaving in the pubs etc. Our fave local is the Blue Boar (opposite my little gym as it happens!). We may well be in there!

Speaking of which, the reason I'm up this late is I'm doing my blog (Diary of a Personal Trainer), and guess what it features this week!! Yup, the Magic Rounabout!! Check it out if you like, you may recognise yourselves! Go to  www.gymandtonichay.co.uk home page, then scroll down to the DOAPT  'drawer' then head for no 18. It should be up by Thursday latest.

    See you soon, Cat
