Baildon Boundary Way - how's training going ?

Hi,

Time is getting short now so how is everyone doing ?  Anyone doing the Triple ? Is it going to be as muddy as two years ago this time - or a bit dryer like last year (apart from the bog I stood in heading up to the gallops) ...

Read that it's a mug this year - didn't like last years shirt colour much so this will be more useful for me, but others may disagree !

training still going very well as I'm off work for 2 weeks until race day -- though I do hope we don't wake up to settled snow on 6th April

A triple attempt from me  - though my first time doing any of the 3 races image

I did the triple last year and have done BBW twice before - conditions can play a big part but think it would be extreme to wake up to snow again !

training not going so well now...

Have a verruca (my first) on the ball of my left foot (probably caught at the pool) that hurts when I walk on it.

The infection and tenderness is going down now, but walking makes it worse, so obviously no running image

It's a race against time now whether it will be better in time for the race - I'm gutted at the moment but not given up yet.

Hope you have a good run guys, a fair bit of rain today might make it a bit sticky. Legs will start to feel it when you get up on Harveys gallops! image

Don't forget the new trailrace in Ilkley on May 25th, similar lines to the triple races. image

Good to hear from you Lawrence - was running Ilkley way today.  May well be interested in this one, see how it goes nearer the time.

Interesting to see how the weather goes this week.

Started training again today, so I'm on for Baildon again - phew!

Not done enough miles (or any miles) during the last week, though prior to that I was already half-marathon ready - so hopefully not slid back too far...

Could anyone recommend what foot wear is suited for this race??  Trail or road shoes??
  • Options

Hi - trail or road - thats my question too!

  • Options

Definitely not road ! Would need a prolonged dry spell to even consider it.

My dilemma is trail or fell - the long section of canal towpath is not good for fell shoes, if the muddy bits are muddy they can be really muddy !  (Like the pick LB image).

    What are 'bunny runs' ?

Good to hear you are on track MDE.  I'm already looking forward to a pint in the clubhouse afterwards....

As I've neverdone this race before I won't know till after the event...

I'm planning to run in trail shoes for the whole series - and pretty grippy ones with large lugs. Don't think my Walshes would provide enough cushioning for the canal path sections.

Trail shoes come with the 'all-terrain' marking and can withstand a mixture of grass, mud, road and path so hopefully I'm gonna be ok

  • Options

Certainly dont want to be wearing the shoes the woman at the bottom of page 7 (Bunny Run Pics) is wearing

  • Options

The cushioning in my non-road shoes is pretty rubbish, really aimed at Fell/orienteering - will I have a problem with the canal path sections? Reckon could probably get away with short sections on a firmer suface but not to many miles!

The canal path is slightly over 2 miles. I'll be running in poorly cushioned trail shoes and don't see that it will be a problem.

First time for me this year doing GG, BBW and MVT. I know the routes and train over them a fair bit so shouldn't get too lost. Anyone know if there are age group prizes for doing all 3?

  • Options

Is that the only section to be concern with? the canal path? is the rest of the route on softer ground?

"shouldn't get too lost" - is that an issue? starting to regret entering this one!!

Alistair - the race should be well signed and marshalled (although there was a problem with the altered Guiseley GAllop this year). Navigation won't be a problem. There are some short road and track sections but the 2 miles along the canal is the longest. It isn't too hard on the towpath and you can also run on the grass verge as well.

Thanks, appreciate you taking the trouble to let me know. Will be there albeit with apprehension..
  • Options

Alaistair - you just need put your apprehensions and worries aside, turn up, and enjoy your running -- as it's too late to buy and test new shoes in time for the race, just wear the best shoes that you have for the conditions on the day. It'll be a tough race but you'll feel a lot better at the end!

Every year this race is heavily oversubscribed, and (from the reports I've heard) it's because it's a bl00dy good race, with good organisation and marshalling.

Has anyone seen the weather forecast for this weekend?

With the lovely bright weather this week and the recent problems that altered Guiseley, you wouldn't really expect snow to happen again... would you?

    Hi,

I've done the BBW last couple of years and marshalling is fine so wouldn't expect any problem at all finding your way.  Out with club tonight with someone who has run a lot of the course over last couple of weeks and says it's not too muddy in the potentially muddy bits.  Definitely trail shoes for me.  As I think it's podro said the other bits of road are fairly short and I regularly run much longer distances on the canal towpath in trail shoes without problem.

Triple - I think it's just certificates, but then I'm never in the running for prizes image I was going to do triple again this year but have a clash with MVT.

Weather earlier in the week suggested some snow / sleet Sunday but now looks like this has gone back to Monday - likely to be showers and a bit colder.  But you never know....

I wondered how that would paste !

    Alternative version

Bright or sunny spells but also showers of hail, sleet and snow, heavy and prolonged in some areas, giving accumulations at times, especially on hills. Maximum temperature 7 °C.image

The difference above is that it is specifically for the 10am and 1pm slots so should cover the run time, the little 'sunny intervals' pictures had no rain drops or greyness about them - that appeared to come later in the afternoon.  So we might be alright .image

Have a great run everybody image

MDE, you've got it spot on there - a very well organised event on as varied a multi-terrain course as you'll find, unless you're after bog snorkelling or beds of fiery coals image

slim chance of going astray, although I was at the Guiseley Gallop and heard of the alleged uncharitable actions of a few spectators. I'm up for the Triple Trail this year after a few years' absence but the MV50s can rest easy: I'm unlikely to trouble even the top half of the category image

Coming over from Liverpool with my running chum, who's not been well since a two-week cycling holiday in Central America, followed by the Wilmslow half last Sunday.

Training: plenty of off-road around Wakefield over Easter while at my Mum's, the GG and Wilmslow last week, which I enjoyed and finished strongly, albeit in a fairly modest time.

    Good luck to all!

image Thanks for the weather update WP - does sound like we'll be getting a bit of everything both in terms of weather and terrain...

Had planned to do lots and lots of training after GG (where I didn't get lost), but sadly this stopped for a week with a painful foot infection. Fortunately this has gone and I've managed a couple of runs since Tuesday - but still feel my run-fitness has dropped a bit.

I'll be wearing a Pudsey Plodders vest number 259 - what numbers are you in Swittle and WP?

Good luck to everyone taking part tomorrow! Looks like we could be in for some interesting weather! Hopefully the snow will come post race...

I'm not racing but I will be busy photographing you guys in action. Just look out for the 'Smile' sign on course though it's not compulsory image  Hope to have the photos available Monday/Tuesday on the Sleepmomsters Site. I'll post a direct link on here as soon as there up... image

I'll be sporting at least a short-sleeved tech. top with a white vest with dark blue trim over and the No. 182, MDE

My mate runs for Liverpool RC, so that'll be a vest with royal blue & white horizontal stripes. She's asked that we go round together as she's not feeling 100% after recent exertions.

I know a lady Pudsey Pacer quite well but best not to use names in public forum - she may well be up for this one.

Paul - love the name of your site image Will certainly flash me gnashers.

Ahhh - swittle? thought the name sounded familiar from a previous forum - did you take part in the forums and run the Liverpool Half this year?

I think there's only one PP woman running at Baildon, but I might be proved wrong...

Forums, yes, Liverpool Half, no, for reasons too tedious to debate here image
