I hate Tesco. I hate their devious business methods, I hate their soul-destroying shops, I hate their ability to bribe councils to build their new shops. I hate their lack of responsibility towards people and the environment.
I totally advocate and support that company being dealt some serious blows.
If Tesco gets the sponsorship I will have to think seriously about my participation in "the greatest race in the world". I'd still run it, but with a giant FUCK TESCO and TERRY LEAHY IS A C**T sign on my head.
Sorry for the language but I hate that company more than you can imagine.
Tesco have sucked for ages. I remember when I spoke to a Lib Dem mate of mine about the terrible influences they have on their producers, yet the majority of customers will remain ignorant to it all. I dearly hope this won't happen. It'd be as bad if Nestlé got it!
Barlist....not jealous in the slightest. As a businessman myself I appreciate the work that goes into building a company up to their level. They've done well on that front.
The methods they use to so, however, are reprehensible. They demand low prices (and in some cases, below production costs) to suppliers, they own a vast swathe of land so that no-one else can build on it (i.e. rivals) and they have bribed council officials to give planning consent for new shops. Not to mention being part of a cartel to fix prices (and yes other supermarkets are just as bad).
Any company that turns to such devious methods to get what it wants needs closer examination and should be nothing to do with an event like the LM.
Tesco is a scumpany, pure and simple, and the blame rests solely at the feet of Terry Leahy and the other directors.
oxforded - unfortunately Tesco are no worse in their commercial approach than many other companies, retail or not......and Leahy is just continuing a business plan started by his predecessor
but they have yet to sink to the depths of Walmart in their treatment of staff and squeezing out competition
I have never liked Tescos since they started to get big so don't shop with them anyway but of they want to sponsor the London Marathon fair do's
Cougie - is this true? I certainly thought the contract was up this year.
I suspect that the World Marathon Majors are probably trying to unify under the same title sponsor. This would mean that they could really clean out the commercial pot.
With existing contracts expiring at different times that may be some time in the future, but I'd be surprised if that is not the way things are heading.
I think we'll see a short-term sponsor until one of the US mega-corps e.g. Nike take over the sponsorship of all the WMM events. Tesco would seem a good bet as they already get involved in the Great Run events and so they clearly consider it a good market.
The Heathorw Terminal 5 London Marathon. Start delayed by 2 weeks due to unforseen circumstances, and don't expect your baggage to be on the baggage lorry in The Mall. They've accidentally been sent to Barbados!
Comments
I ran it sponsored by Mars/Gillette, ADT, Nutrasweet and Flora, I cant remember who did it before 1992.
Shame it can't be sponsored by the National Lottery, ain't that where some of the money is supposed to go to????

Not even McDonalds would make me as angry.
We can worry about the new sponsor next year.
Cougie lets hope it's Appple then we can get an Ipod in the goodie bag
Pah!
I hope the Bank of England don't sponser it. The rate of interest this event attracts would cripple us all.
Coat already on.
