Managed to finish in 11:13 so missed out on a bronze medal (again) but got my Green Number.
Of the 20000 places, 5000 places will be reserved for Novice runners, so as long as you get in there early you should be ok. Remember you can enter first then send in details of your qualification months later.
Details of entry for 2010 are now on the Comrades website. Entry for novices opens on 1st November and closes when 5000 is reached or on the last day of November. As long as you're quick off the mark, getting a place shouldn't be a problem.
Written in simple runners speak it will give you a good idea of how to go about training for and running Comrades. Former Comrades Marathon Coach Don Oliver provides much of the information regarding the training programmes and monthly advice.
I am the author of the site and the information I provide is based on 12 years of successive and successful runs. I am currently in the UK until October 2009 and would be glad to come and speak to your club.
Its 2010 and out for me, if I don't stop this year I'll be chasing that permanent number and I don't want to train that hard for another 5 years, getting too old!
Very tempted by this as a step up from Marathons....bit concerned over amount of training needed. In marathon training run 40-50 miles a week and PB of 3:07 but its the double long runs at weekends on the plan I have seen that scare me - taking up a huge chunk of family time.... decisions decisions...
martin, for us in the UK I believe we just have to run an officially measured marathon, so pretty much any marathon will suffice, so long as you send the results to Comrades by April
Just wanted to say I'm dead jealous of all of you contemplating doing this. I'm originally from South Africa and grew up watching this every year. I LOVE it!!!!!! I just wish I'd done in years ago in my 20's or 30's. I'm planning to go back there to live in 3 years time. Somehow I think 48 is a big old to contemplate my first.
YogaYoga: I started running Comrades at 46, still going at 52, Age is a mental thing ( I ran a Comrades PB 8-40 at 51)
SD: Booked hotel while we were their last year! Flight very soon.
DD - any tips for a first time Comrades runner? Well ahvent enetered yet but intend to on the 1st November and it looks liek all teh places for previous runners wont be going either as so far 7000 odd of the 15000 have gone...so fingers crossed.
Any websites that are particularly useful? Books? Which training plan do you use?
Yogajoga - agree with DD - It's never too late - a lot of it is mental... I'll be 44 for the next one...
Hi Martin!
DD: Found that the my favourite City Lodge (just by Kingsmead) is already booked up! You're up in Umhlanga again then? Still looking at flights - I see that YOU can now get a direct flight to Durban with Emirates missing Jo'burg completely...
Still trying to work out flights...
Entry is sorted though! Nice not to worry too much about seeding as I'm already in E
Yogojoga - I'm with you on that. Also grew up there and watched it every year. Did it back in 1995 (albeit as a charity walk and over 2 days - half of the route per day). still we walked pretty fast and our total time was just over 12hours. ooooh so lucky all those competing! What about 2 Oceans in Cape Town? - thats also a pretty impressive race for those who don't get a place in Comrades.
Keith: I always use Norrie Williamsons B plane with a bit of A thrown in " Everyones Guide to Distance running" you can get it on Amazon.
Tips? Learn to run long and slow. Seriously if you follow the schedule mentioned above (near enough never be a slave to schedules) you will be fine. Ultra running is a hard mistress and there will be times during the training and the race when you just want to give up. Don't it always gets better.
Good Luck.
Looking at the entries to date with two weeks before the close for previous runners I would hazard a guess that near enough all 15,000 will be taken
SD: Yes were staying at City lodge Umhlanga and yes we will be flying direct to Durban........ yahoo Don't think there will be so many of us this year though.
As long as you enter on November 01 you will get in, there aren't that many nutters in the world who want to run 56 miles! Near enough 11,000 entries now with two weeks to run for previous entrants, given that 7 of my club mates haven't made up their minds yet I would expect a late rush.

I'm waiting patiently for 1st November...
What's the betting that the flight prices are hiked up because England are in the World Cup and will be travelling over there..

Hi all
