Mrs RB is looking to upgrade her bike...probably next year but I was wondering what would be a good option for about £1,000...I thought Planet X did something around that price but don't really know for sure...
RB - is it a triathlon bike or a road bike (with or withourt tri bars) she will be looking for as there is a huge amount of road bikes at that price but not too many tri bikes and even less if she is looking for female specific bike.
As you will be aware the bike that fits her best is the one to buy
Planet X were doing their full carbon road bike with I think a Dura Ace groupset for 999 last I heard ? Fantastic value. Meldy has one in girly blue. V nice too.
TSA - I would go for the carbon fibre road bike with ok components. Its the frame and wheels that make the difference.
You may race slightly faster with a full on Tri bike, but that race will be a tiny tiny fraction of the time that you'll be riding the bike for (if you train) and a road bike is better suited to most conditions.
I think Emmilou had a pink PlanetX, either that or it was Calf's when they did Cheshire Sprint the other week
Nope..........sorry no Planet x's for either of us......Dolan road bike for me (they sprayed it pink for me as a custom job) and Calf took his Dolan TT bike to Cheshire
Ratbag - the Boardman road bikes are good value BUT are only available at Halfords. very good spec for the prices - as I said earlier tho, the price is not relevant if the bike doesnt fit,
As she is looking to upgrade for next year, you can leave it a couple of months until the new year models come out and the shops start discounting this years models, or leave it until after Xmas when the sales are in full flow.
RB also look at R&A cycles in New York tri specific stuff is much cheaper and the bike turns up in 4 days great service, I got a P2C for £1650 deliverd for the full spec bike but it depends on exchange rate www.racycles.com
Thanks for the input peeps...I'll wait until after the end of the year as suggested and then take a look at some of the suggestions...I'm now thinking that maybe I nedd either:-
a) New shiny bike (but mine is still very lovely)
b) upgrade components on my bike (currently Ultegra 9 speed) - go to 10spd DA...
c) get a winter training bike...and do b) above...
If you're lucky (?) like me and have to travel to the States a fair bit, it can seriously pay dividends buying a bike over there. I bought a Felt roadbike a couple of years ago at about half the price I would have paid in Europe, just packed it in its cardboard box, checked it in as luggage (not even excess baggage) and didn't even get stopped at customs. Turned out a real bargain.
It actually would have been cheaper to pay for a holiday in the States and buy the bike there rather than buy one in Europe.
I drew up a shortlist based on reviews in BikeSport Michigan (see link), great website. I'm seriously pining for a Felt B12 at the moment....
I think I'd just about get away with a B12 being a crap cyclist, a B2 and I would look a bit of an idiot struggling along at 20 miles an hour, although it would probably do 20 miles an hour without me pedalling.
I'm going to wait for the end-of-year discounts and get the B12 at a knock down price for next year.

Hmmmm...the Planet X looks good value doesn't it especially if they can Dura Ace at £999...bargain...
Numpty question...do they do triples?
And mellifera has a shexy black Planet X lo-pro from the pics i saw at Bala. But I'd deffo go with the road frame - certainly for starters.
they're like a fecking rash everywhere - it's like being a chav
go for something more interesting
Suggestions fb???
I'm open to looking at alternatives?
Strange this I was about to start a new thread then saw this,
I also need to buy a road bike for IMCH next year I hope to have £1000 to spend
I will be doing all my training on it as well as racing, am I better getting a
1. carbon Fibre road bike with Ok components
2. An alloy road bike with good components
3. a tri specific bike
This would be option 3
This would be option 1

If you get serious - you can upgrade after a bit.
I like the Planet X bikes - I'd love a Pompino.
Another P-X carbon user here. Not pink though - black, which goes very well with the PSOF kit. Those Campag bikes are just for Welsh pensioners....

www.racycles.com
nope penno still great value just got our hed 3's delivered faster and cheaper thamn UK importer
Give them a call ( you also have to add about £100 for the VAT as it landsin UK but still worthwhile)
"I'd love a Pompino"
Cougie - a quick google search would suggest that that isn't the kind of thing one should be posting on this forum.
Or maybe it is? The squeaky wheel, and all that....
Kanga - you could ask Plum for references ? Actually he was great last year in Frankfurt - forever tidying up after me.

Decisions..decisions.....
a) Dont bother if yours is still "lovely"
b) Dont bother you wont notice the difference
c) Do this, get a £400 - £500 jobby
d) Spend the money you have saved on 1 to 1 swimming lessons
