Just wondering! Would you advise those who want to do an Ultra to enter the marathon and change as and when a decision is reached? No good, of course, for ultra runners who think marathons are only for wimps (like me)!!!
I have now entered as well. Now I can start getting nervous as this is my first marathon! I am already building some base mileage so should be ready to start marathon training in January.
I will be joining the 'wimps' doing just the marathon,
I totally agree with you on the sensible numbers. That is why the FLM does not appeal to me. I get the impression that with that many runners you are more likely to sustain a non-running injury!
Good luck with the poor brittle legs! The next couple of months are going to be full of hard work..
When I ran the Great British 10K last summer (not the most perfect example because the organisation there is disgraceful) I did so much weaving and turning to get round people that I ended up twisting my knee.
Made a decision then, no more pile-ups. All my favourite races have less than 2,000 runners - most are about 500.
I'm also in. Will have supply of factor 50 just in case. If you're looking for a marathon with fantastic organisation and a scenic rural course, then look no further.
Great, I'm in. My first marathon if I stay in good shape. Already 10 weeks in to my training schedule, although last time I trained for a marathon I broke down with calf strain two weeks before the day and had to pull out.
Let's hope that this time it's not all in vain, as this race sounds fab from the comments!
Look forward to seeing you there! It looks like your training is going great. If you are that far ahead in your training schedule I guess it gives you the opportunity to properly look after your legs between now and the marathon. i did 10 miles on Monday, sevin yesterday and four today and my knees are still a bit sore. I hope it will jsut go away rather than me having to take a break as I am trying to build up my mileage. We'll see...
Still plenty of time thera. Good mileage btw. Hope knee is ok get it sorted if possible maybe see someone its better to catch any problems early rather than later
I've been base building since Sept 2 hour sun day runs each week when there was no race. Decided to start early. Though saying that December will be a hard month getting my runs in (work related)
You're a wee bit ahead of me in mileage. I've kept my long runs down to 7M so far, with longish Thursday runs at 5-6M. I'm due to put in my first hour run next Sunday. I'm doing a ton of swimming to keep the levels of fitness up while I'm only running 3/4 days a week - but I've cained 10 KGs of lard off the stomach in 10 weeks! There's something very masochistic about all this - my wife doesn't get all this enthusiasm, although she likes the flat stomach!
I'm in as well, following a 26-weeker that is very popular here in Sweden. There's one guru who dominates training philosophy here. He publishes 26-week programs for various levels of ambition, and these programs are followed by thousands of folk. (They're actually designed for the Stockholm Marathon, but I'm adjusting the dates, of course).
Nice one Nathan. That pic of me must have been taken in the first mile. I (think) I'm still running. Most of the snaps that are taken of me these days have me in walking mode! I hope it's not cold at Hastings on Sunday or I'll freeze to the spot! I now have next May sorted out. Dorset Villages (sounds like the name of a French wine!) on the 3rd, Halstead on the 10th, and then Newry on the 25th. At least that's the plan! Roll on the long days and the sunshine!
Yes, Thera. I only do marathons these days as I "run" at the same pace whatever the distance. I used to run marathons on consecutive days but I now need at least a week to recover. I have completed all road race marathons currently organised in the UK and Ireland (with the exception of Newry that clashed this year with a Hebridean Marathon) but Halstead remains my favourite. Guaranteed , you will enjoy.

Hi Pammie

See you all there...
Thera
Cool, I'm in for this one! Sounds like a great race - much prefer a sensibly decent sized crowd as opposed to the umpteen zillion you get in London.
Now then, if I can nurse my poor brittle legs through training for the next few months I will be a very happy chappy!!!

im in! My first Marathon, let the training build up begin
Hello Thera and Icclesuez - Don't worry everything will be alright
Best of luck with the training for your first
Thera - I'm building base too - wise decision and start the training proper in January

Week 4 of 26 just drawing to a close, still a strong focus on base-training, but even now a certain amount of pace included!
There's some new photos from 2008 on our website...some familiar names!

Race Director, Halstead & Essex Marathon
Thanks Nathan. Being somewhat unphotogenic that's one of the more flattering pics of me!
Seems strange now thinking back to just how hot it was that day. Marginally different to how it's likely to be at Hastings on Sunday!

Thats it, entered now.... this will not only be an attempt at my first sub 3:30, but also 3:15, the way things have gone lately.
On a real purple run at the moment and long may it continue, so my 11th mara may well be the best... I hope so....
Excellent news RFJ. Glad you're coming along for the ride.
