Hi all
I'm looking to purchase my first road bike and would (need) some advise please.
Just an entry level to get me started i seem to have come up with these two options ( fit the budget )
GIANT SCR 3.0 2007 or Trek 1000 2007
They both seem a similar spec but would Really Appreciate Any/All advise that people would kindly share.
Thanks In Advance

I started a thread back in Feb/March to ask for bike advice particularly re Giants. You might be able to look back and find it.
I bought an SCR2.
Get which ever you can get in black and yellow
Also been looking at road bikes, the guy in the shop says I don't need a triple as no one rides them nowadays, is this true my MTb is a triple and am glad of the extra gearing esp on uphills, also
on up hills should I be riding an easy gear sat down or a harder gear up and out of the saddle?
get which ever is the most comfy ... you are more likely to ride it
I started with a giant then went scott now have a trek
The giant (for me) was a great starter bike
SA - a lot of the base models come with a triple, did the guy in the LBS not have any in stock, was he trying to get you to but something he had in and needed to shift.
Depending on the casette and chain ring there can be roughly the same gearing on a double or triple
If you're planning to do triathlons then I'd suggest a compact double as first choice and a triple as second choice, unless you're a really strong cyclist.
And the guy in the bike shop was telling you a fib. Loads of people ride triples.
I started with a Giant too, good bike for my first few tris.
I've got a Felt now, with a triple, it doesn't have a small ring the size of a MTB, but I do need it when climbing up some longer (10km +) climbs.
I prefer to stay seated as much as possible with the odd half-minute out of the saddle every now and again to ease the numbness in my crotch.
They get the frame and then build the bike themselves
its a Planet X frame (light Alloy not the full carbon)
and they build it with shimao tigra components
didn't have my size built so no it wasnt in stock that he was trying to shift
SA - is it this one

There is also a good deal on the Ultegra spec one if you can afford it
Hi
Can I butt in on this thread? I am looking to start cycling, been ill and have to reduce the running so thought cycling would be a good way to get back to fitness with view to a tri in the distant future (coz at the moment my swimming is c**p).
My local shop has recommended a giant, either TCR AW or SCR 3W. I am 5ft 2in (on a good day) and female. However, yesterday whislt watching the local tri someone suggested a trek, but he wasn't a local dealer. My thinking was that if I went for Giant, the shop is local and the guy is prepared to adjust the bike as and when, ie put those cllippy pedals on etc. My problem is that I know very little about road bikes, I have riden a mountain bike for years and don't really know what I am looking for in a road bike. Currently I am erring towards the SCR as I prefer the colour!
Any help and advice would be much appreciated.
yep thats the one
I too fancy the Giant SCR 3.0, where's the cheapest you've seen it being sold for? The cheapest I've found is £374 http://www.tredz.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productcatalogue=16827
Dodge - I couldn't ride a red bike - that's the colour my face goes when I work hard!
Jonsi - I haven't looked on the internet only a local shop as I thought I would get a better after sales service which I will need as I don't know anyone who knows anything about bikes. As my husband said 'it is 30yrs since he rode a road bike and things have changed a lot since then. Locally the bike is £465.
Mini s, I'm sure you're right that after sales would be much better from a LBS, I think I will contact a few around to see what they charge, I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for local service, not sure I'd stretch to £90 extra though, money is a bit tight at the mo! I'll see what they say.
here it is Pages 54/55

drop her a line see if its still for sale
Fastest man at putting out fires? Red Adair. red = fast FACT
Put Lance Armstrong or Chris Hoy on a red Chopper and you on a fancy nancy carbon titanium speed machine (in black, no red) and say GO! and who's across the line first? RED everytime.
Oh how exciting; just been to another local bike shop. They suggested a specialized bike, Dolche at £549 or Dolche elite at £799. (which is a little more than I want to pay). However, they do have an elite coming in which is only a few months old - lady needs to put a child seat on so needs to sell!! I'm having a look at this on Friday and.................... yes, it is white with pink bits on.
Jonsi - the Giant I have looked at is white and bright blue I will see if I can find the link.
JPenno, thanks for the link I will have a look.
Both the local bike shops have been very helpful and I feel confident that they will fit me with the right bike. Today the guy explained about narrower handlebars and other specific differences for those of us who aren't very tall.
Jonsi - I think this is the link (I'm not very technical so I hope this works)!
