  • Hey guys

    Did yogalates yesterday and 5k (just under 30min) this morning.  Travelling back home tonight to my Mum's, so we can go to the wedding show tomorrow.  First day off for ages, but I dare say it's not going to feel like it.

    Had a good day yesterday, finally managed to identify a compound that had been eluding me for over a week and got my membership to the Royal Society of Chemistry as well, so once I'm officially a doctor in July I will have BSc PhD MRSC after my name, if I'm ever feeling pretencious (sp?) enough to use it.

    Have fun in Germany Jimo.

  • grast_girl BSc PhD MRSC .. .. congratulations .. !!

    You must use them .. you will have done a lot of hard work to get the recognition and qualifications .. so using them is simply an acknowledgement of your hard work, determination and dedication .. it's certainly not showing off in anyway .. image

    For years I have used the letters MBM after my name .. especially when I thought it might help me in amyway .. I can also use 'Lady' in front of my name too ... has a grand ring to it don't you think ... Lady patootie MBM ... image

  • I shall put them on my business cards, when I start to need them.  I'm still getting used to the fact I will have Dr in front of my name from July (although it can be a liability if you want insurance for anything).  You'd be amazed how many scientists don't use it very often, there are a few that want to be called Dr/Prof so-and-so, but most are quite happy with first names.
  • Don't scientists and docs have some specialist general insurance companies .. and banking deals that give preferential rates ?? I know the police force have special deals they can use if they wish .. so sometimes the 'Dr' can probably come in useful ... 'doc grast_girl' ... heheheh ...

    And I always think if you've done the training and hard work you deserve everything you can get .. makes me fel a bit of a cheat with my 'Lady' .. I've not earned it .. and the MBM started out as a bit of a laugh to impress a few silly salesgirls standing chewing gum in their stores .. amazing how they suddenly stand up straight and start speaking 'posh' when they get my credit card in their mits and see either the 'Lady' or 'MBM' ... image

  • Wow, congrats GG, awesome.  I wouldn't put your letters after your name for normal stuff.  If I got mail in the post with them all, I think it'd look a bit funny, but you must definitely put them on your business card, and be Dr.  That's your right, and you've worked for it.

    Today I've done more ivy clearing, and actually sorted out when I'll get my actual new job offer, plus I've one the battle with the old employers, and I'm going to get the money they owe me without me having to sign my life away first, so a result all in all.

    I'm catching up on a lot of overdue admin this week - it sure takes up a lot of time.  I haven't been running or to the gym today, but I figure a good couple of hours in the garden counts.

    Enjoying your kitchen P?  How come lady? Come on, tell all!

  • Ummm .. it's a bit embarrasing .. image
  • Changes the subject .. hooray .. last kitchen unit finally fitted into place .. now I can get everything put away over the weekend .. just the flooring left to do .. and should be starting that early next week .. ohh .. and the fridge freezer to lift back into the kitchen .. it's 3 feet away in the lounge at the moment .. but no point getting that back in place until the flooring is laid .. image

    And all sorted just an hour or so before my monthly shopping arrives .. phew ... all done in the nick of time .. image

     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Hmm ... okay .. 'Lady' ... I entered a competition to win a title .. I used to enter about 500 online competitions a week .. won a lot of stuff too .. sadly mostly things I didn't want to win .. but I sold a few, gave some to various animal protection and battered women charities and used some as gifts for friends and family .. I only entered for a laugh .. 'wouldn't it be funny if I won' ... and lo and behold I did win ..image .. It's a legal title and I can use it on credit cards and prefix my name with it .. image
    I also won a big chunk of the moon ...  or at least the mining rights to it .. and if any country lands a spacecraft on my acre of the moon they have to pay me 'parking' fees .. closest landing so far has been just 50 miles away (I was hoping for a computer malfunction that would send them slightly off course !) ... just 'one small step' away .. so I keep an eye on any space launches .. got to be ready to demand my 'outrageously expensive' parking fees lol !!
    And also my name was blasted into space on a microchip .. sent there by one of America's various missions to make contact  with aliens ... so one day a green or grey little man might read the microchip and wonder why the heck all these people sent names into space hahahaha
  • Ohhh myyyy .. just watched the TV programme about this ..
     http://www.toughguy.co.uk/
    Grown men sobbing with the cold .. why, why would folks want to do this ??
  • Wow, you've won all sorts of cool stuff, I've only ever won stuff in the local newspaper, possibly by virtue of being the only entry, but I can imagine it does make getting good service a little easier.
    Did 12k along the canal on Sunday, was very nice day, but a bit warm (not complaining).  Did it in 1h 18min, which wasn't too bad, but I'm not entirely sure I've measured it properly, it can get surprisingly disorientating on the canal.  I should finally get my first 20k week for ages this week, seeing as it looks like I'll have no excuse from the weather.
  • Hallo everyone,
    Reading back through quickly, a big big well done to grast_girl on the doctor stuff. I always said this was the brainiest thread on the site. image Congrats grast_girl. image (and well done on the 12k's too)
    Glad to hear everything is going well patootie, I think that tough guy stuff looks a walk in the park. image
    Good news on the work front JuanaH, I'm not sure how ivy clearing converts into km's and miles. I'll try working out. image
    Germany was a lot of fun, my mate's daughter is adorable (I'm not a babby person at all normally). Maybe I'll have one of me own one day now. Didn't do any running as last couple of runs before leaving were quite hard work so I thought I'd use the trip as a bit of a break from running to recharge as not had more than a day's break since half marathon. Will do 3.5 miles tonight though.
    Anyways, hop y'all keeping well. image
    image Are you for real .. I watched hefty rugby players sobbing .. it was snowing and the water was near freezing .. people being carted off in ambulances .. walk in the park indeed .... I'd love to come and watch you do it !!!
    Heheheh now there's a challenge for you !!
    Glad you enjoyed your German sojourn .. image
  • Welcome back, Jimo - he's getting all broody - watch out world!
    Like the Lady story, P.  Quite a funny one
    12k GG?  Awesome - that's you're longest ever now, isn't it?
    Been into the new place to prove who I am, and actually met someone friendly, so things are looking up, and I start on 20 April, so have a nice break to enjoy myself, and clear some more ivy - it counts as very good exercise, I'll have you know.  I did 5k yesterday am, and I was exhausted.  I did it in 27 mins, which is ok, but my stamina is all but gone.  Must get back into it right away!  Off to get my boots re-heeled now - credit crunch and all that!
  • Yeah I did enjoy my break thanks patootie, I making it my mission to visit my friends in far away places now. Well it's a excuse to get out the country every now and then (plus the accomadation is free!). image
    Glad to hear your new work looks good JuanaH, nice easter break till you start now. Hopefully the weather will hold for you.
    So 3.5 miles last night, funny how just 3 days off feels like you've missed loads of training! Have to devise new weight program tonight. Thinking 5.5 miles tomorrow and 4 miles on Friday.
    Everyone else got much planned?
  • image the more I read about 'serious' running .. the more it seems a job in itself .. when I ran it was merely for fun and to get somewhere quicker (I didn't have a car at the time) .. I did buy a good pair of trainers though .. I knew I needed to cushion my joints properly .. image
    I started out by strolling .. then using lampposts as markers .. I would walk on length between posts, then slowly jog the next .. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing or how to set about getting fit .. I then made it a trio of lampposts .. walk, jog, slow run ... and I just built it up from there .. image
    But I was very much a fair weather runner .. too hot, too cold, rain, etc and I stayed at home .. image
    I've been following Lance Armstrong on Twitter ... that man (and probably most of you all in here) has more energy in his little toe than I do .. he positively oozes energy from dawn to dusk .. image
  • Lance Armstrong is pretty darn cool.
    Just been out walking round Virginia water - the magnolia and rhododendron (how do you spell that?!) are starting to come into flower and it's beautiful.  Now I'm sitting down to recover for a little bit before I head into town for some leaving drinks - I'm going to try and stay off the hard stuff though.  I'll let you know how I get on....
    Body Pump tomorrow, then I'm going to attempt 6k on Thursday, on a steady build up back to 10k.  I simply want to always be at a fitness level where I can run 10k - so that'll be my regular weekend run.  Then trying to run halves and upwards will be less of a training shock.
    How's everyone else today?
  • Nice leaving drinks JuanaH?
    Devised new weight program last night, worked on my glutes and hammy's and they are a little sore today (but a good sore if you know what I mean). Will do 5.5 miles tonight.
    Got to go to works drinks after run tonight, they are to help build 'team spirit' can't say that I'm looking forward to spending a few hours in a pub with a few people one of whom I'd rather not be around (for anyone that remembers image)
    So anybody got much else on this week?
  • Ooof, not only does that person work with you, but they're also in the same team.  Cor blimey, guv.  That ain't too fun...
    Off to body pump class in a minute - so nice to be at home during the day.  I haven't forgotten about helping you, Jimo - tis on my list of things to do....
    Gotta go and prep for the gymbo
  • You don't half get yourself into some scrapes hey Jimo.  At least you don't have it every week with the director like we had for a while here, that was REALLY fun, although most of the time it was just students there taking advantage of the free booze.
    Did 4.3k this morning, but I hadn't had enough carbs the night before so it was actually as slow as my really long run at the weekend, ridiculous huh, but a good lesson in nutrition.  Got yogalates later hopefully.
    My lovely flatmate decided to have a shower at 6am this morning, I was not impressed seeing as my room is right next door and she has this terrible habit of hacking up phloem really loudly while she's having her shower image.  Thankfully I think she's leaving soon, so I won't have to put up with her much longer.
  • Yeah I'm a numbnuts. image
    Enjoy the bodypump thing JuanaH, no rush about the other thing (it slipped my mind to be honest)
    I would surprised if a stoodent ever turned down free booze.
    It must be nicer on your morning runs now grast_girl, have fun at yogalates.
    Yeah that's the problem with housemates, still dream of the day I have my own place.......
  • That's grim, GG.  I have to say, I don't regret living on my own without a flat mate at all.  It's simply delightful.  Almost think if I ever get married, the husband will have to live next door!!!
    Body pump was good today - and did a bit of cardio after.  Might even go back this evening.  Mum is coming over now, and we're going to attack the ivy for a couple of hours before a nice cuppa with a slice of cake (think I can have that today, after all the exercise I'll get).
    How are the job hunts and applications going?
  • Put one into the OU as planned, haven't put any more in since, but I should check the deadlines, so thanks for the reminder.
    You seem to have a lot of ivy to attack lately.  Can't wait til I can move back in with Sanity, although our little one bed flat is way too small for two people, we're thinking of finding somewhere bigger to rent while we work out where we want to buy.
    Had a nice session of yogalates then lunch outside, far too relaxing though when you have to go back to work.
  • Good work on the exercise JuanaH, I can't wait to get out for a run looking out the window at the weather today.
    You've been doing that yogalates for a while now hey grast_girl. Good luck with the OU.
    My job applying can be summed up with one word, badly!
  • The kitchen is FINISHED !!!!
     Two nice men just came in and laid the new flooring .. fridge freezer is finally back in the kitchen and out of my lounge .. at long last I can reclaim my lounge and move everything back to where is should be .. image
    It is BEAUTIFUL ... so .. I am just sitting back with a nice mug of coffee and looking at it  .... image
  • Good work on the kitchen.
    I reckon the ivy has been there un touched for around 20 years.  My mum couldn't believe how bad it was, and she's a bit of an expert gardener...  I'm going to enjoy a nice soak  in the bath now.
    Have a good evening all
  • Yeah nice one on the kitchen patootie. image
    Maybe you should scour the internet for uses of ivy JuanaH, it's bound to be able to be useful for somethink.
    Well 5 miles as planned last night, then quick shower down the pub for 'works drinks' drove my car so only had the one pint, got free dinner which was good. The rest was pretty rubbish though, ah well won't have to do that for a while.
    So just a 4 mile run on Friday for me before heading down to the country and a 16 mile run planned for Sunday (which will equal my furthest ever).
    Much planned people for this bound to be sunny, glorious day?
  • Uses for common ivy or to give it the latin name 'hedera helix'  ... image
     http://www.artofcalm.com/alternativemedicine/herbs/ivy.htm
     Goats and deer do eat ivy (although it says depends on variety of ivy) .. but it is toxic to pets, humans and all other primates !! image
  • You could see if the local florists want the ivy for something, although it might be the wrong type.
    Did 4k this morning in a fairly speedy 22:16, which would give me a 5k time of 28:15, which is a few seconds faster than my PB, and a 10k time of 56:30, which would be awesome, but unlikely to happen just yet.  Should be doing a slightly shorter LSR of 11k this weekend, so hopefully the weather will stay nice for it.
    Suppose I'd better get on and do some work.
