  • Went out and ran 5.5 miles yesterday evening, ran it in exactly an hour!!

Really pleased with that as the distance felt fine and I know I can speed up a bit.

I use mapmyrun to get the distance - how reliable is it -I must check my route in the car.It would be great if I was doing further than mapmyrun was telling me!Hope its not the other way around though!!
  • hi susiebe - I use mapmyrun and it comes out different when I use different magnifications - always a shorter run the more magnified it is - though that's probably due to my sausage fingers not being able to place the marker correctly on the lower magnification.  But it pretty much matches to a route that I've measured in my car so I treat it as relatively accurate unless someone else knows better...

I failed to keep to my plan for yesterday, but only because I did a 4 mile run instead of circuits class - I'd had a knackering day, what wiht having to fend off the auditors every 5 minutes, and by the time I got home I knew that only a run would take the tension out of me.  Managed a 9.5 minute mile pace for the route, so pretty pleased.  Did boxercise tonight too - the third time I've been and it's a really excellent class.

Those of you doing the GNR - are you getting butterflies yet? image

Oh - and my rejection magazine came for the London marathon today - don't know whether to be relieved or sad...

  • yeah me too - rejection mag.........nice fleece thoughimage
  • I would be glad. Sorry but marathins frighten me.image
  • Unfortunately I was 2 stone heavier when I applied for the marathon - the fleece I've got is like a tent now.  Ah well, it will be good for dog walking.

I do have a little problem with it though - if I wear it people who notice it are probably going to assume that I've done the marathon, not that I've been rejected.  I'd feel like a fraud.

  • Went out with the running club tonight and managed 8 miles it was great with some good people. On about 4 miles I thought oh no this is too hard and fast but as the miles went on it seemed to get better. At the end I felt like I could have managed some more.

It is really helping my confindence. Also made an arrangement to run on Sundays with someone else can't do every Sunday but it will be nice to do the odd one with someone. I really thought I wouldn't enjoy running with others but as you chat  you don't feel the pain, where as lately when I am alone I am really struggling.

Sorry to all who are disappointed about the FLM.

Well done Susiebe it's great when you see improvement.

yersinia sorry you feel rough but your cardio won't suffer with your cycling, so don't beat yourself up over not running.

  • Oh, my cardio is pretty strong - it's my legs can't keep up with it usually!

I wouldn't have cycled today, except it's my mum's birthday at the weekend, and I want to make her a fancy cake, and needed equipment that I can only get at this really amazing specialised little shop 5 miles away.

I'm just frustrated, because I was just establishing a 3 a week rhythm, and I know that once you get out of the habit, it can be hard to re-establish it. I haven't run for a week and a half and I wanted to have a strong running base before starting a RW plan  the week after next.

Likewise the swimming. Maybe I'll take my swimming kit down to my mum's this weekend. There's a 50m pool which I could go to the early morning slot on Monday. It's nice to swim in a longer pool and feel a different rhythm on your stroke occasionally.

Anyway, booked the ballet for tomorrow evening. I've decided I WILL be well enough to enjoy it, and we're taking mum, so that'll be a nice birthday treat for her.

  • Is anyone doing the great north run......i just seen an advert on the bbc......looks very exiting.....image

  • Not me Beanie,

Yersinia, I am just back from a 2 week holiday and it was tough getting back but you do it.

I started running Sept 2007 and had got as far as running 45 min about 4.5 miles by December. I then injured both legs and didn't run until May.

My first run after 5 months rest was 46 minutes just a little less distance so it was amazing that I hadn't completely lost it.

I have since made the mistake of trying to get runs in when not well and it is a disaster for your body and for your confidence.

    Take care.

  • Ooh. My new shoes arrived in the post this morning.

Am I well enough for a teensy weensy plod to try them out, I wonder? I'm thinking of walking to the park (it's only half a mile away, but there's a hill between me and it, and I'm not well enough to enjoy that), then doing two slow circuits of a 1km ring, then walking back. Maybe I'll wear my HRM and try to keep v low - LSR intensity or below.

  • Did it!

Shoes felt fine from the off image.

Went real slow, but couldn't keep my heart rate down at its usual LSR rate. Didn't get warm like I usually would. I think it was just about as far as I needed to go, but not utterly shattered afterwards, so I think it was ok to do.

  • Glad you are finally in some shoes you are happy with Yersinia.

Your running club sounds great susie, I am lucky to have friend to run with most of the time but I want to do my extended long run alone to pace myself. I did the 10k alone last weekend and found it good to be alone.

I like the idea of a club but the Preston Harriers meet on a Wed night and not sure I can commit every week, I don't like to start what I can not stick with.

The wet weather yesterday got me thinking about how to keep running up regardless of the rain, light rain I can do but the recent downpours are a pain. OH said I could have a dreadmill in the garage but.....no thanks!

I have a Ron Hill running jacket but would welcome any wet/cold weather kit  ideas?

  • My new shoes arrived last week.  Wore them for the first time this morning for a 3 miler.  Although they are identical to my old ones I could feel them rubbing the back of my heel.  I'm going to alternate the 2 pairs until the old ones reach retirement (about another 100 miles).

    A typical weeks exercise:-

Mon: Rest unless I need to practice any aerobics routines
Tues: 2 mile easy run, teach aerobic class
    Wed: Teach aerobic class
Thurs: 3 mile hard run or intervals
    Fri: Rest
Sat: LSR (currently 7 miles but increasing)
    Sun: Rest

  • Received reject mag. for London Marathon yesterdayimage. Going for a club place ( i think our club gets two places). May even go for  a charity place ( the amount they expect you to raise puts me off a bit , £1500).

Went out and ran 10 miles last night, in 1 hr 52 min. . Half marathon fast approaching, 12th Oct.

    Next 10k early November.

  • Hard luck eyeore.

    Good luck on the 12th.

Permission to whinge about my rubbish week.

Did nine miles last Sat and was starting to feel a bit more confident about my half, which is now in just over two weeks time (19th).

Sunday had a big row with a friend that stressed me out big time, result being my car share arrangement is down the tubes which is a worry financially.  Monday the cooker blew up.  Tuesday I pulled a muscle in my back - haven't been able to run, or go to gym since.  Wednesday brutal PMT kicked in.  Thursday didn't get FLM place.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!  On the plus side, my back is now MUCH better so I'm hoping for a final long run on Sunday, but I would really have preferred to have been easing off on distance by now.

    Hey ho.  Whinge over!

  • rough week kaybee! whinge away - that's what we're here for.
  • eyeore - 10 miles! impressive stuff. good luck with the flm club place.
  • Kaybee - crappy.........dont worry about moaning that is all i seem to do lately......anyway you can sort your row out with your friend if only to get your car share back on????

I hop your run goes okay on Sunday.

    eeoyore - 10 miles wow

i am now going out for a 7 miles run -my longest ever - wish me luck.

  • kaybee I am sure your car share needs you as much as you need them and hopefully you can sort things out.

Good luck everyone with your runs today. As I did 8 on Thurs with the running club I went out and did 5 this morning got up at 8 as was scared of the reports of terrible rain.

Did ok got over that mental barrier that keeps attacking me when I am on my own and realised that for me the first 4 miles are shite and I have to dig deep I did 5.3 as that is where the loop ended but my last mile was the quickest and could have done a bit more so it feels good when you stop because you want to not because you have to.

    Good luck Beenie

  • Didn't go out for my LSR this morning.  Woke up with chronic pain in my upper back.  Later realised that it must have happened yesterday when I walked the dog.  A squirrel ran across the path and the dog decided he wanted to chase it forgetting he was still on the lead.  Will try some gentle stretching later.  If it eases up I'll go out tomorrow even if it is p***ing with rain as forecast image.

  • thanks susie  - well i am back just had a look and it was 7.24 miles - LSR is understatement it was a very long steady run (1 hour 25mins!).

I am feeling really good though could of gone on for longer - now cold though may have to light the fire and sit still!!!!!

kelly - hope your back gets better soon.

  • i want to run! am actually a bit jealous listening to you all... BUT, walking quickly, walking up stairs, anything really and the hip tells me no so i'm going to keep listening to it. better to have a week off now than months and months later down the line....

is it only catherine p racing this weekend? anyone else?

  • We are all seeming a bit down at the moment. I blame ythe weather. Cold and wet are not a great combination with colds and back ache and strained muscles and the dreeded PMT to contend with as well. The good thing is we all have the same isues and troubles, we understand.

Going for my LSR tomorrow. Plan 7-8miles. Feel I can do it if I take a steady pace. Itching to go today, maybe I will as kids are off to Grandparents for the night and I may have a couple at the pub to sleep off tomorrow.

I think I will go for it. I can take a country route to Grans house and meet OH there fo a lift home.

    I am doing it, now!

  • It is definitely better to rest an injury than push it and be out longer.

Beanie that is what a LSR is supposed to be so don't knock it.

Hard luck kelly. I dropped my drinking bottle and then trod on it and felt my ankle go and it was a scary moment. Paranoid about getting injured now before the 26th.

Exciting times coming with loads of races ahead.

  • Did 7.53 miles and OH came and got me as he was worried,I had been running for 1hr 20mins ish. Didn't use stop clock, just normal watch as I didn't want to think about pace. I am pleased. I could have done the full route of 8.5 as legs were in the rut and would have kept going, upper body was aching though. Is that common?

I admit that I liked running further and wasn't bored. I can certainly start to see the appeal of distance over speed. Might try 8 miles for next weeks LSR.

  • That sounds like a great run debbie mac.I also like running the slightly further as I think i'm built more for stamina than speed!I'm up to 5.5 miles now but would love eventually to run a half marathon. That is my long term aim.
You said you don't get bored, nor do I as i love the time to myself away from OH and children, but I have been wondering about taking some music with me.I have some of those ear bud type headphones but don't like them, they fall out too easily and irritate my inner ear.
Just wondered what headphones people recommend?
  • It may just be your posture well done on the miles.
  • Well done to you susiebe I use the clip on earphones they are good, but I am not sure I like the music it seems to distract me and my pace is affected by the speed of the music.

    Seem to run better without.
