Yeah why do poeple have gels for short races. Gels are just horrid, why would you eat them when you don't have to. I don't mind people carrying water, you might not need it but if makes you feel better. I know I've carried water on short runs and it was for comfort.
Hmmm - I spose they could have a valid reason for wearing them. Sometimes I wear mine - just to carry things. Maybe they are running home after the race or something.
You would have to be pretty dehydrated before you start to NEED or even significantly benefit from a water station in a non-tropical 10K, even if you're going to take a couple of hours. The reason why they have them is that people complain if they don't.
I suppose the question is whether those who 'need' water are drinking properly in the day or so before the race. It's no good guzzling a gallon of water an hour beforehand!
But either way, feel free (even though it's breaking the rules!), and it's not an etiquette problem anyway, just a performance one - assuming you stay clear of Lee's unmentionables.
Treading on gels is not nice, but then taking them is pretty grim too. Now, treading (nay, stamping) on discarded (but 90% full) Lucozade Sport pouches at FLM - there's a fine sport!
I must confess, I carried a water bottle in my first 10k, however, I now know better, and don't.
On the subject of water stations in 10k's, I like them, simply because I can empty a couple of glasses of water over my head halfway through the race, and find it really refreshing!!!!.
I have witnessed people furiously taking gels 5mins before a 5 mile race before..........noobs LOL
The only gel I have goes in my hair, looking good Billy Ray
Actually that has reminded me. Runners wearing after shave/perfume so overpowering you wonder when you will see again. You are running FFS, put the stuff on afterwards!
Got nothing against Vick - she's a lovely girl! No that is fine along with Deep Heat etc but a fill blast of the latest Lynx Agent Orange really can make me feel ill
Lee-sterine: quote "People carrying water bottles irritates me because there is just no need to have it, likewise having water stations on a 10k, pointless"
I get a dry mouth when I run, as a result runs over 5 miles I carry water to keep my mouth moist.
My last 10k was in July, baking hot.......not so pointless.
People who compare others to themselves irritate me.
To expand. I carry water if I run over 5 miles, irrespective if i'm intending to do 6, 8, 10, 15 or however many miles. I might slurp some after a half mile, or after 4 and 3 quater miles, depends on how dry my mouth is.

I have occasionally smirked to see people wearing camelbaks in 10ks in this country .... but it's not really an etiquette problem is it?

I ran my first race in 1999, so I'm hardly a beginner.
I've run races at every distance from 10k up to and inlcuding marathons. I'm never in the top couple of hundred, but I'm never right at the back.
I always carry a doughnut water bottle.
And I don't see why anyone would care.
DQ me? Give me penatly points? Get a life! Haven't you got anything more important to worry about?
You might need some carbs to go with the water - or water to wash down the carbs!
And I've never whacked anyone in the nuts with it. (been tempted, though.....)

I think Krispy Kreme do mini ones......
But they aren't as nice as a proper, fresh (and preferably still warm) jam doughnut, with loose sugar on the outside.
But they tend to get squashed if I try and carry one in the key pocket of my shorts
