  • Hi all.  Nice to see some familiar faces on here.

Was rather gobsmacked to get the "you've been successful in the ballot" magazine on Thursday.  Things to ponder: 1) will I still try to tap family/friends/colleagues for sponsorship this year? (last time I had no choice having got a charity place) 2) will I be able to improve on my time of 4.53 from this year? (hardly 4.20 or thereabouts!)

  • Congratulations round and round, as long as you get 4:52 it will be a successimage .Defo try and go for sponsorship if you raise £50 or £500 it's still more money than the relevent charity would have got anyway as your not taking up one of there bond places.
  • Darren, how did your half go?

I ran 24.06 for my 5km. Not that fast, but the fastest I have done for a few years and it was a tough 2 lap course with a long uphill section. Must have added up to at least 2k. I seem to have picked up a pesky hip problem though, so not good. Tried to do my 20 Sunday and got as far as 1200m. It was really hurting so stopped and went out and did 10.5m on my bike instead. Weirdly it was fine on my bike, but didn't do too much as my legs aren't used to biking.

So when does the training start for all of you who got in?

Roundandround, I agree with Lalsger. I would do some fundraising as the poor charities are really struggling at the mo (my friend works for the NSPCC). At least you won't be under any pressure to raise a certain amount this time round.
  • Well done Sarah...good time for your 5k...sorry to hear about your hip though...make sure you don`t overdo it before Dublin...

My 10k went well sunday.....managed a good enough time of 51.29 which considering I didn`t get to bed til 2.30 the night before was not bad! Looking forward to next week and the great eastern....it`s flat/undulationg , mainly in the outskirts of peterborough and then through the centre....if I remember rightly...my memory of it isn`t great as I was quite unwell last time. The organisation was good, that much I do recall and the goody bag the best I have ever had.

Stll pondering on london...really really want to do it but my husband is very anti me undertaking the huge amount of sponsorship the charities require  and I do see his point, it`s a large undertaking not to be taken lightly, I will however be training as if I am doing the marathon in the hope that I will be joining those of you doing it through the club ballot and if not I will be doing Windermere so it will all help.

Anyone doing any races in november? I`m finding it really hard to find anything above 10k....found one in Harrogate for 10 miles on the 1st and I am in Harrogate that weekend with friends but think it might be rude to enter a race when we are all on a weekend away!

  • Hi,

hope everyone is well, have had a good week running..weather been much easier to run in..not too hot and not too windy.Really wanted to pick brains...thinking of doing New York next year....do we have to do it through a specialist travel site or can we enter and sort ourselves out and what is the ballot like? Any thoughts/previous experiences welcomed!

  • Hiya Runs,

Well done on your 10k after so little sleep. Don't know how you do it! And good luck for this weekend. I wanted to do that one, but didn't enter as knew I would end up racing it and that i shouldn't really do that with Dublin being so close. i think you can just enter for new York. Not sure. i think the website gives you info about how to enter.

I am now in the situation I was in with London. Wondering how I am going to make it round if I am in pain. I went to see my physio last week and I have hip bursitis (inflammation of my hip joint). Not good. I have to take the max dose I can of diclofenac and basically get round! I also have a very weak glute med, but I knew that. I have to do exercises for it and make sure I stretch my back and hip flexors out, which aren't helping with the imbalance. because my pelvis tilts forward and my back arches, my glute med doesn't fire properly and I use my glute max too much. of course, if I am still in pain walking then i will have to pull out, but will see how I go. That diclofenac is good stuff.
  • Oh Sarah,

You poor thing, I feel dreadful for you...let`s hope the diclofenac does the trick, keep with it but don`t let determination to do Dublin ruin any future races or running for you...thank goodness for your physio.

I must look at New York properly....my internet is down at home so only get passing glances at the info at work...tried looking on my phone but it take so long to load I give up.....will definately book it as soon places are released and fingers crossed I get a place.

Weather looks great..( I`m at work), hope it lasts for tomorrow.Ran for the first time in months in the cold and rain last night...winter here we come  ( actually although it`s harder to make myself get out there once I am out it`s easier to run in the cold and rain than the blistering humid heat we have had)

Good luck to all racing this weekend, enjoy your LSR`s all those training , catch up next week when hopfully my internet is up and running!

  • Hi Runs,

Yes it's a fine line isn't it? It is starting to feel a bit better. Still a bit sore sometimes when walking around but the physio did do a lot of intensive work so expected it to hurt more before it gets better. Itching to do some exercise though, but don't even want to do squats or anything as it is weight bearing and using my hip. Would go swimming, but have to wait a couple of days as just had hair highlighted.

Hope work was ok, Runs. Did seem like a lovely day today. Typical you were working. Not looking forward to training in the winter, but it's not so much the cold I hate but the rain, so hopefully we will have a drier winter. At least there won;t be any chance of Dublin being too hot for me!

  • out for 4mile run today weather fine right knee felt ok but later at home knee started to click but gets better later when walking about this is the start of training will have to see how things go
  • Sarah,

Sorry to hear to you are going through it again so close to the main event. Hope it all comes together for you in a couple of weeks!!

I haven't been able to run for weeks now, my back is still stopping me. I am going to try easing back into it this week and see how it goes.

  • KG, hope that knee of yours is ok. Mine do similar sometimes.

Runsout, how did the half go?

Thanks Adrian. I really hope your back gets better soon. You must be wanting to get your training started. Yep ease back into it slowly and see how it goes. have you been to a physio as they might be able to help. Do you think you will do Cranleigh again next year? I think I will do it is I am free and the Bramely 20. I must be mad!
  • I have spent the last few weeks being mauled by my physio and it seems to have paid off. Went for a gentle 4 miles yesterday and no problems to report so far image

I will certainly be doing Cranleigh, I didnt do Bramley last year, but I might try that too.

  • That's great news Adrian. You'll be back on form soon image I'll hopefully see you there then, though next year i fear i will no longer be able to keep up with you image
  • Well done Adrian, it`l always hard getting back after injury....slowly slowly as they say.

I enjoyed the great Eastern sunday, fantastic weather for running and the crowds were great. i decided to run with my friend in the end as the last race he did was St Albans half when he was taken in an ambulance at 8 miles so he was obviously a little nervous, i have to admit I found it a little frustrating as he is slower than me but at the end i felt I could have run on another 5 miles easily and our time was 1.58 dead so not too bad ( and a PB for my friend so that was nice) . Next race however I must do for myself...

Been running my usual since, didn`t feel the need for a break and have loved every minute so far this week as the weather has been ideal, probably should try some cross training too but felt that the aerobics classes i used when I was training last year may have contributed to alot of my niggles so am making the most of the weather and running when I can and will think about pilates and swimming after christmas or when the weather makes running impossible......

Hope everyone is getting on well so far with training and those that didn`t get in to London have got over the disappointment..i`m still hoping for a club place but happy with windermere if not..what are you others doing

  • an easy 4mile today knee ok during run but clicks later will have to stretch and keep moving will try longer run at weekend
  • I didn't get in the ballot but am hoping for a club place - fingers crossed.  Congrats to everyone that did get in.
  • Runsout, still waiting to hear about the club place too. Doubt I will get one though as there are people who have done a lot more for the club than me and the person choosing knows I am second claim, even though I haven't raced for my old club in a while. I've decided on Riga I think, although I am now seriously wondering whether I should do more marathons. i bet i will change my mind again tbhough!

KG, great news about the knees. yep stretching is very important so try and keep that up.

Fingers crossed for you too Richard.
  • Hi guys, nothing much to report but taking advantage of being at work and having internet access as the home internet is still down despite  complaints to orange!

Really enjoying running at the moment.....weather good, autumn leaves falling, farmers busy in the fields....life is good..well when out running!

Have been looking at buying some hi-viz clothing..anyone got a favourite brand? I can`t decide whether to go for a gillet/jacket or long sleeve t shirt......I do have a bib but it is too big and i have to pin it to my tops which isn`t really good for the tops.My problem is that I get very hot when out so jackets tend to get discarded as do some of the thicker long sleeve tops.....I have looked in alot of the catalogues and there seem to be some good deals out there...what do other people use.

  • All sounds good Runsout image I think the idea of running a half at an easy pace is not so unappealing, at least you enjoyed it

I managed an 8 mile club run on Wednesday and it went better than expected getting round in just over an hour.

I am currently working on a deign of hi-viz accessories, but nothing close to production yet. Will keep you posted image

    Happy running all

  • Adrian, that's a great run, especially when you have been out injured. I wouldn't be able to do that when really fit image

Runs, I need to get some hi-viz stuff too. I have the same prob, in that I normally get too hot and take my jacket off at some point. I guess a gillet might work, or one of those jackets that turns into a gillet. That would be useful.

Did just under 5.5miles last night and hip was getting a little sore by the end but ok walking afterwards. It is a little sore today, though better than it was. Think I will hold off now until the big day (26th) and just swim. Hopefully by then it will be a lot better.
  • Sounds like a good idea Sarah, swimming is good and won't put further strain on your hip. Picked up a high biz bib for £3 today in soccersports or whatever it's called which will do for now and looking around at jacket/gillet style tops .
Nothing much planned this weekend, may even take the whole weekend off! Trouble is I always plan that but them the sun shines and I just have to get out!
  • I say just do what you feel like Runs. See what the weather does image I will have to look there then and get something for in the meantime too.
  • Sorry Adrian, I didn`t mean to ignore your comment about the hi viz stuff.....I`ve been using my iphone as no internet at home and can`t  go back over the posts once I start to reply and I couldn`t remember who had said they were looking into it...good for you..and yes please do keep us informed of progress.

What a beautiful day..again....and yet again I am at work but I finish at 1 so could take advantage and go for a run but I did promise myself a day off and i really should have a rest day, maybe I will content myself with walking the dog.

Enjoy running this weekend...make the most of the weather as according to the BBC it is going to get wet and windy....be warned!

  • Yes I'm not liking this wet and windy lark. Apparently it's not looking good for Dublin. No idea what to run in. Was going to run inmy charity vest from london and 3 quarter or full length leggings, but now wondering if I will be too cold. My problem is that I soon heat up and get hot. I will have to take one of my foil blankets or bin bags for the start.

Hello everyone.  Obviously lots of you are familiar with each other on this thread and I'm interested in joining a 4.20 (ish) thread.  My query ...... is this thread STILL about 4.20 or have many of you progressed on from there?  I see this thread was started some time ago.  I was wondering whether to start a new 4.15/4.20 thread ?   Happy to stay here if you'll have me but sometimes its difficult to feel part of a long established thread.

My story :  just completed a marathon in 4.30 and want to aim for 4.20 (or less?) in London. Thats it really!  And I want to swap training stories....or bone idleness stories imageimage

  • Hello Ladyfe, and welcome.

The thread started last year for London and it is a great bunch. There are a few of us running London again this year, but I think the majority are either waiting to see if they can get club places or looking for an alternative.

I am hoping to get around in a little under the 4hr mark this year, but I have an affinity with this group so check it regularly.

Sarah, how did you get on????

  • Welcome Ladyfe....sounds to me like you are in the right group....I did London last year as my first marathon and found the support in this group fantastic...I`m hoping to do it again either through a charity or club place and I will definatley stick with the group although like Adrian I would like to be closer to 4 this year ( 4.06 last year although I think I may well have peaked and never get near that again)

Have done alot of running already this week....20 miles since monday...insanity I know but I`m making the most of the weather and also conscious that i am having a weekend off ....spending the weekend in harrogate..very tempted to take my running stuff and escape if I can but not counting on it!

Anyone know when we hear about club places???Had a phone message today from a charity offering me a place ..no details of how much I need to raise but if  it is anything like the previous charity I will sadly have to decline.......

  • Jenny50Jenny50 ✭✭✭

Thanks for the welcome Adrian B and Runsout.  I was lucky to get a place through the ballot and although hope to raise money for charity am glad I'm not under pressure to raise a minimum amount!

I'm recovering from Sundays marathon.....quads very stiff and achy today although I feel fine otherwise and am looking forward to getting back into running!  Not too sure when to start my VLM training schedule proper. I used Hal Higdon for the marathon just gone and will continue to use him. What do you guys follow?

  • Welcome to the gang ladyfe. They are a great bunch. There will probably be another thread set up for VLM next year as well. Which marathon did you do? Well done for your time.

Runs/Adrian, I did the stupidest thing. Firstly I forgot my painkilers so had to run/walk back to the hotel to get them. Luckily we had only been walking for about 10 mins but didn't have time to walk to the hotel and back again! Then I decided it would be a good idea to blow my plan of following the 4 hr pacers and go at about 8.50 something pace! Cardiowise I felt ok, but my legs were already hurting by mile 5. Not good. My hip only twinged a little though which was great and weirdly seems better than it was! Tried slowing myself down after half way, but seemed to speed up for a few miles! Got to just before 20, saw another incline and gave in and walked. My legs and feet were agony. Had stabbing pains in the forefront of my foot. Went through in just under 3hrs having gone thorugh half way in 1.57ish. Knew I just needed to keep going and I would still make sub 4. gave up again and walked at 24 and then about 800m later when I saw another incline. That last walk break cost me my sub 4 image Thought I would just dip under, but just didn't have it in my legs to speed up as much as I needed. Crossed the line in 4.00.05! Good thing i was thinking of doing Riga! The course wasn't really flat though. I would stretch to undulating, although some were hills. The race couldn't have been different to London. I could barely walk afterwards and my legs have been much sorer this time round.

All I thought later on was why didn't you stay near the pacers. They came past me at about 22/23 and stayed with them for about a mile then they disappeared off. Think they must have been a few mins under 4 though as I started not too far back from them and they were nowhere to be seen near then end.

I'm looking at the positives now though. learnt a valuable pacing lesson and that long runs are key for me. Only did one 17miler for this one, and that was my longest run. Also was a PB after all on a harder course than London and weighing about 5 or 6 lbs more than for London.

The Dublin crowd were great and are the first mile or so you could run freely for most of the race. Good marshalling, start and finish and goody back as it was adidas sponsored like London. Would recommend it.

Ladyfe, I used Hal Higdon this time round and adapted it down to a 4 day programme. Will try that again I think.

Hi Sarah - Well done on your time for Dublin marathon - seemed like a painful experience. I did London in 2006 ( first marathon) and suffered badly because I only did one long run of about 16 miles and looking back my training was pretty shoddy.image

The marathon  I did on Sunday ( my second) was the Brentwood Multi-mile marathon - all in Weald Country Park and very hilly image. It was all off road and quite an experience!  I really concentrated on maintaining a steady pace but was forced to slow down during the last few miles as my quads and hamstrings were protesting! But I reached my target time so its onwards and upwards from here

I think I really did learn from my first marathon experience and my more consistent approach to training really did pay off for this one.  I really do like Hal Higdon's schedules. Like you I modified it to 4 days ( with the occasional 5 days).

I can't wait to get back into training again - my quads won't let me do any running yet!
