  • Euph - I've no chance unfortunately.  Best possible outcome by then is that I will be able to start with a flat couple of miles as very first rehabilitation steps, and then only if it feels really good.  May be end March before I can even take this step.  I am starting to go STIR CRAZY (non running form) already so no idea what I'll be like mentally by then !!!image

Possible consolation will be to aim for the Durham 30m discusssed earlier on this thread - something to look forward to image

  • Wharfy.....the Durham 30 is looking very good for me at the mo too... should have recovered from london by then and will be able to give it some stick (sounds impressive that, to be honest over 30 miles will prolly be a walking stick image)

i've gone ahead and ordered the rockies.. just waiting on delivery now, means i've gotta run sunday's 20 on roads (yawn!!) still will only be for 1 week!! thanks again for the advice all...

Whats everyone got planned for the weekend?

  • Clairster - I think time on feet, with all the miles for London I doubt I'd be fast. Would be nice to get under 5 though, you up for the challenge? We weren't far off last time and didn't seem to be hammering it.
  • Euph.. you running the Ldn mara this year mate?
  • Hi ALL

I can't make the Durham 30 I'm afraid. I'm away In Anglesey that w/e. i think I'll start a campaign for a 8 day week (or to be more precise a 3 day weekend!)

James - My Roclites are drying out for what now seems like a std Sunday morn ritual.

Was over at Rivington yday for the Anglezarke Amble (Not the most aptly named event....). Up out of bed at 05:15, out of the house @ 05:40. At the start point for 07:15 for a cuppa & a slice of toast (yes - things got better after the unearthly early start)

Never done the AA but really enjoyed. All off road for 24miles (bar crossing an odd quiet road or running along one for 200yds b4 taking the footpath). Quite challenging in places....akin to Rombalds i'd say in difficulty. It had it down as a 24miler (no idea if accurate but my legs were telling me so afterwards). Did 4hrs 08mins and think may have scraped top10 which i was very happy with. Took a wrong turn in latter stages a time or two but was greatly aided by BritNick who was on i think his 10th consecutive AA and also did a PB this year! If you see this BritNick then hats off 2u.

no formal events for me now till the TT. How's about everyone else? I'll prob find a thing or two to do pre and/or post though once i get the diary out.

    Catch you later....

    Mark

  • Mark - Good amble, and excellent result. TT is next long one for me.

James - I am running London. Got a place so I thought I'd train properly. Any targets/aspriations for yours? A PB for me (3:43) or sub 3:30 if all goes to plan. I'm sure these LDWA events are excellent for the endurance. Rocklites will do you fine, very versatile; today I was running 7:30 miles on a muddy, slushy, snowy cross country course - last saturday, complete opposite, much more sedate pace over ice and snow at Rombalds. No foot complaints from either. I've found teaming up the roclites with Hilly Mono skin socks is a fantastic combo.

Must check when Durham 30 is and if I can do. I have been told and have a form to remind me but unless I write on calender I will forget.

p.s. for those doing (mark) or considering (?) Calderdale Hike have you see they've revised route again! Maybe they've found an even muddier moor to subject the runners/walkers too.

  • wharfy - boohoo on your injury image

great running mark, i know britnick (h runs for stockport as well), you will prob find him on the FRA threads image. half pb for me today, 1.41.11 image

i notice they have dropped this to 24, i got 25 or 26 bang on last year. strange....

  • Clairster - I'm sure it was down as trollers 24 last year but measured 25+. Well done on BIG pb, your knocking on the door of 1:39 now.
  • hey guys... hope your weekends are going well..

Mark... We could start a joint campaign, i'm after a 30 hour day, there just isn't enough time to train, work and spend time with the family. an extra 4 hours would just about cover it, you never know i might even get time to sleep!! image Congrats on the Amble mate, sounds like a good course, i can't believe i didn't know about these LDWA events till i found TT on here..

..at the mo i've nothing planned between now and TT, as i mentioned earlier in this string i hurt my back and lost 5 weeks before christmas so i've been dragging my ass back to fitness, Trollers will be time on feet endurance training for the FLM.

Euph... I was lucky enough to get a ballot place for last year but had to defer for a year due to a pretty nasty hip injury, this will be my first formal mara, although i've run the distance offroad, so i'm really not sure about targets, my half PB is 1.42 in carlisle last october although i felt i had a really bad race, i messed up my pre race hydration pretty badly and had to stop to pee, also started to fast, i covered the first 2 miles uphill in just over 11 mins before i realised what i was doing and pulled back, it had quite a big effect on my legs and cost me dearly... i'm training for a sub 3.30 and life permitting i think i'm doing ok but i'm really struggling on the tempo and speed training so prolly 3.45 will be more realistic, still gunna go for the 3.30 pace though! sod it! i'll prolly only do LDN once image

Wow! 7.30 miles offroad, thats going some, especialy in those conditions, how long was the race?.. the Rocklites are inbound and should be here midweek, i heard they size small so ordered half a size bigger, hopefully if they're a little big i'll still have the turnaround time for the weekend.. i'll have to check out the hilly socks, i kinda like my thorlos but was thinking about trying the new 1000 mile sock "Fusion" they've got em in sportshoes.com on 3 for 2 (£9.99 each) anyone had any experience with them?

    Clairster.. congrats on the PB!!!

Got out and did 20.53 good north Cumbrian miles in 3.01.54 today.. on roads unfortunately but managed to plan a pretty good hilly route, looks like the trainings starting to pay off and i'm getting back up to where i was before my back injury!! bring on TT!!!! image

  • James - XC was only 5.5m so just pushed hard and able to make good pace on runnable bits.

re. roclites sizing, not sure what size I've got compaired to road shoes. All I know is they are a bit more fitted, which is confidence inspring when its dead muddy or flying down a hill.

I don't think any running socks are bad socks. Though I got some specialist  cold weather sportswear socks from Blacks and they were rubbish, ruined after a few muddy runs and washes. May get some of those socks at that price.

  • james - my roclites are HALF A SIZE SMALLER than my road shoes image
  • euph.. still good minute/ miles even over that distance, was it a good, fun course?  the socks look quite good actually, double layered and fully padded, inc achillies padding and at the risk of sounding like an ad for sportshoes, like you said, for that price.......

Clairster/Euph... i'll have to wait and see with the rockies i guess, i like the sound of them being well fitted, you really can't beat that snug, not gunna lose them, feeling. if they're a little big i should be able to order another pair before the weekend and send these ones back...  i can't face another long run away from my fells!!!! image
  • hey guys.. the rockies came yesterday but they are too big, just gotta wait now for a smaller set, it's a bit of a pain but isn't going to effect my sunday run as i've picked up a calf tear, so i'm gunna have to rest for a few days and re-build again... i think i must have torn it slightly when the fells were frozen and i've made it worse over the last week and a half.. still i'll do some calf raises in a few days and build the muscle back again over the next 3 weeks and i should still be good for TT....
  • Hope that calf tear recovers James, is this thread cursed? Best to go for the tighter fit. I sometimes have to really squueze to get my roclites on, no problems when on though and even in worst mud I haven't lost a shoe yet - unlike that poor girl at Rombalds.

It was a good XC, our local courses are more like trail races which is more intresting than XC as its not laps of a ploughed field. This was one of the easier courses as most others have a killer climb or two. One in the moors in December I was ten minute miling over the 6m course, much hillier and muddier than last Sundays course as the pace difference shows.

No off-road stuff in training for me in the last week, next few weeks will mostly be on road. 12m last night (8 under mara pace) and planning 22 tomorrow and maybe getting on the bike Sunday.

  • Enjoy that running Euph  image

James - not allowed to be more than a small setback, there will be no more injuries on this thread !!!

Have had 4 gym sessions this week, my core strength could uproot trees and my shoulders / biceps are bulging in all the unusual places, also swimming so much I am growing gills...  got to keep that fitness up somehow image

  • Changing subject slightly, anybody on here fancy pushing the miles on after thias and doing something like osmotherley Phoenix.

Wharfy - With your core strength you will be the Yin to my Yang, my core and upper probably kitten weak as barely managing 1/2 sessions per week, but running well. probably like yourself in the trade off I'd take the running!

  • great going wharfy image
  • Wharfy and Euph.. don't worry i'm being VERY carefull!!! it's petty sore at the mo but with 3 days rest and maybe some gentle stretching i should be able to start running again by tuesday/wednesday, start gently at around 3 to 5 miles with some calf raises and bring my mileage back up to 10 miles by the weekend.. up to 20 the week after, then trollers the week after that... it's a pretty steep curve but without anymore setbacks it's do-able.. thankfully i haven't hurt it as badly as Podro did his, i'm pretty sure running on road instead of fells last weekend saved me from seriously damaging it and while i'm sure i've made a mico-tear larger than it may have needed to be i've not ruptured it on a loose rock or ploughing through a beck.... (phew!!)

Euph.. i like the sound of the xc races your way, they sound like great fun and short enough to be able to compete and still put in miles around them on the weekend!! we could do with some like that around here!! image  we were talking about the durham dales challenge (30m), i think Wharfy was aiming to be fit for it, earlier on this thread which is the weekend before the Pheonix i think.. i'm definately keen to push out a bit around then but being new to LDWA events am happy to take advice on which is better, they're both a similar distance from me so i'm easy image

Wharfy.. glad the gym's working for you mate, any signs of things improving with your leg yet or is it still to early to tell?

Podro.. how are you bearing up old chap? image

  • Hiya guys & gals...

I'm signed up for the Phoenix already (for some strange reason i entered the 2009 event a few weeks after the 2008 one!). It's a greeat course with a really good finish in Osmotherley of all places. They have a village fete/fair on around the village on the same day to coincide with the event. Chippy is open & so are the pubs so what more could one want after a long race.

It was a bit of a shame last year for the locals i guess who put on the post race fete as the weather took a turn & it rained quite a lot. End result = lots of people sort of trotted off not long after finishing. Fingers crossed for this years event!

Due to tje ridiculously early entry of mine i got an email thru many moons ago from Julie the organiser to say i was race no.1 (My oh my - I'll have to try & live upto the billing!!!)

I've had a quiet week post Anglezarke. Prob no more than 10miles out running + a game of footie & a couple of swims. I have a little bit of a calf strain but i think it'll need little more than a bit of nursing to sort.

Wharfy - Apols for breaking the new injury mantra i.e. don't mention them!

    Take care all...

    Mark....

  • james - sonds doable to me..the 1st year i did rombalds,, i was out  for half of dec and half of jan..had only built up to 10M in one go before doing it, but maintained fitness on biike etc

what is it with calves? mine has been playing up, deep painful massage weds and a few days rest, i hope it wil be ok image

  • heya all... hope your weekends training's gone well, i've been alternating between climbing the walls and driving my wife up them image

Marc.. no1 for the Pheonix eh? lol! how'd you get on last year? it sounds like a good day out and with the fete there it'll have something for the wife and lad to do aswell as take my mind off the pain after image

Clairster.. i love the feeling after a good deep sports massage, once the pain has subsided it feels great!! lol!!  i think it's the time of the year, everyones pushing up the mileage after a winter lull.. stands to reason there are going to be a lot of injurys i guess. it's becoming a fact of life for me now, everytime i get my mileage up around this level something seems to happen, they seem less serious each time though and i'm prolly getting better at managing them.. i think this year i'm going to try to keep my mileage at 50+ a week throughout the winter and much as it pains me i may have to consider getting a bike and swimming a bit to keep the impact down where possible... this is only my fourth year of  running seriously so it's all still quite new to me....

B.T.W. got my o/s yesterday, does anyone have a detailed route?

  • james - i sent you a mail as we had a really good map lasts year, sma egoes to everyone else i got a great map off a guy on the FRA forums, ping me a mail if you want it image

have also got garmin coords stored in my garmin, i think euph can prob tell me how to get them off my garmin and send them, tis a great wee freeware program out there that lets you upload stuff toand from your gps

no pressure then mark image  i got given race numebr 1 for the mourne way mara L)

  • Clairster - Hope my calves follow the same prediction as yours i.e. full reco in a fay or three. I'd apprec an email of the route also if you've got it to hand. I think I'll be OK on the actual day en-route but i tend to confuse one route with another re: these races. My memory is a tad on the poor side at the best of times.

James - You'll def enjoy the Phoenix it's a top event. i did 5hrs 57min last year and apart from a sticky bit around 8miles from the finish things went well. I ran around the latter part of the course with a guy who'd come up all the way from Reading or somewhere in that area. He dropped me about 8miles from the finish but he had kept me going somewhat for some of the earlier miles (at a good pace also). Top guy he was too. Hope to bump into him this year....

Euph - Hope the long 22 went to plan. Your prep for London seems to be running to plan. I'll keep an eye out for you on the telly...

Wharfy - Hat's off 2u. I  can do or tend to mope about when the running is off the menu. Sounds like your keeping yourself well oiled in prep for pulling back on the running shoes

I've about a hour ago filled in the long ago printed form for "The Fellsman" which i've been doing much umming and aahing about for a long old while. Stamp on the envelope & in the box tomorrow....

     http://www.fellsman.org.uk

This'll be my long one for the 1st half of this year.....Here's me hoping i won't be out on the course too long!!

     Now....Where's that training plan!

     Take it easy all....

     Mark....

  • Hey - sounds like everyone is doing great.  I fancied Pheonix for a while but falls on my wifes b'day so definitely out this year !  Maybe one for 2010.

Just found out this week that my sons piano exam is falling on 14th, wife is working so I will be taking.  Maybe the injury was a blessing in surprise as it would have been a bit of a moral dilemma ! Don't know the time yet but may put in doubt chance to join for a drink after - but if not hopefully I'll catch some of you at other runs this year...

Thats link to GPS freeware. You can put route co-ords in that, and click to convert and upload to garmin. If you download software give me a poke and I can send over coordinates file for this (I have from last year) as its kept in .txt format which shouldn't upset anybodies e-mail.

Mark - Very brave!! Its on my to do list, but probably not this year.

Clairster - Not the calves for me but my right hamstring/hip flexor get "tender" after long runs. I'm also hoping sports mass will do trick.

  • I really am Threadslayer right now!
  • Your piccy keeps changing ...

Havn't posted much lately as I havn't been doing any running - very sad !

Hope everyone else has got a few good long runs under their belt - not long now..image

  • hello - this is my next challenge image  ran Steyner Stinger mara last w/e so hopefully the legs getting used to the mileage and ascents. Looking forward to meeting you all..
  • hi guys.... had a crappy week this week and TT's starting to look doubtful, i've still not been able to run on my calf and to top it off i've come down with a bug of some description, runny nose, cough, hi temp... the lot!!  i'm going out for a run tomorrow morning regardless of how i'm feeling, it'll be the acid test... and i'll be more able to decide on TT after that, if i can manage 5 miles with no calf problems and only minor dificultys with this bloody cold then i should still be able to do TT but if i'm off my feet any longer i wont be able to risk injury this close to London..... put simply it's a complete bloody nightmare...

Bo-Bo.. all being well (fingers crossed) i'll see you on the day!!

i hope the rest of you are getting on better???

  • clairsterclairster ✭✭✭

image james ... take care, rest and dont run today..running too early is not good! i've nnot run all week as i have a persistent cold and have decided that now i need it to go image
