What: was going to be nowt but having change my flight home to tomorrow and thus no running have decied to go and do 6 miles in minute Why: see above Last hard: ages Last Rest: 3 days
JH: Nah not affecting marathon preps, not doing very much but sleeping. As always when I'm in marine sleuth mode nothing happens in a hurry!
Club session last night went OK...5 x 6mins with 90secs jog recoveries. Actually felt much better than expected. The ankle started playing up a bit on the last couple of efforts (more downhill than the earlier ones), and was pretty sore on the cooldown jog back to the club, but has calmed down quickly since giving me no pain while walking today. Very strange. I say ankle, but most of the pain comes above the ankle bone on the outside. As for the session, happy enough to average something like 5.25-5.45 pace on the efforts, since there are plenty of undulations along the way. Felt pretty strong, so reasonably happy.
For today, probably an easy 7 miles or so by way of recovery.
Seeing my 'musculoskeletal specialist' (!!!) tomorrow night, so hopefully get a bit more info on the injury then.
Scobos - is it possibly inflammation around the tendon? I had a little niggle below the ankle with the peroneal tendon (I think) that runs down the outside of the leg, and essentially, around the ankle bone.
MikeB - when/if you check in..... are your Tuesdays and Thursdays single run days? Nice to see you do your long runs at a good clip. I'm working my way down on that one. Our training paces are not too dissimilar at the moment. My current paces are (loosely) based on McMillan's recommendations for where I believe I am at the moment. As I regain some fitness the paces will increase accordingly, but we're generally not far apart in our thinking.
Found out I have got in to the Fred Whitton this morning. 118 mile cycle ride through the Lakes going up all the major passes and finishing up with Hardknott and Wrynose. Did it 2 years ago and had to walk the last bit of Hardknott when someone stopped in front of me and I couldn't get past. Determined to go up every climb this year.
What: cycle 20, hills pm Why: see above, FLM training
What: 8 and a bit d&d Swim d&d 5-8 miles Lunchtime 1-3 + circuits PM Gym - Large muscles PM Lyrics: no Why: it's Tuesday Last hard: Sunday Last rest: 5th December 2008
Podro - nice going on getting in, what kind of time are you aiming for - and if you are planning to ride hardknott what gears ? A mate of mine rode the FW on 39*23 bottom but he did have to walk that last ramp up at the top - I've always done it with a 39*27 or 28 and still had to walk parts of Hardknott.
XC teams - I don't know what other clubs do but sometimes if the club has a team captain/organiser that rings round that makes all the difference between getting a full team out or not. My old club just used to assume people knew when the races were and left it up to them to turn up or not - I think it makes it more of a team thing if people get a phone call and if the results are published on the web or at least at the clubhouse so everyone can see how the team is getting on etc.
What - back / si joint still playing up so no running today - decided to treat it with painkillers for tine anti inflammatory properties after a bit of internet research and it does seem to be working a bit so I'll risk a couple of hours on the bike this evening. Bike training isn't going badly - did 170 odd miles last week with enough quality for the time of year - running training is going down the pan and I think I can kiss goodbye to any chance of the club V40 XC trophy unless my rival misses this Sundays race.
What: 7M with 3x1.5M tempo thrown in Why: I asked myself that very question half way through the third 1.5M ... I think the answer was "I want to run a 3.45 marathon in less than 15 weeks" Last hard: see above Last rest: Wednesday
Target for tempo bits today was 7.30 pace i.e. 11.15 for each bit. Did the first one too quickly (I always, always so that - wish I could get the pacing sorted), so the times went 10.20, 10.30, 10.40. Mathematically, it's a pleasing sequence, and they are all well below target time, so I've got to be pleased even though I gradually got slower. The middle one includes time taken to open and close two gates along the Thames Path.
SGQ: it's bike-speak. I've got one like them in the family, too. Except he prefers fixed-gear (and that through Brussels city centre)
Podro: good luck with the bike training, whichever gear you choose
DD: couldn't help but smile at your "6miles in a minute". A bit fast for taper, no?
Yesterday I went to the "speed session" at the club. I sort of had forgotten we used to do those, we don't go to the track in winter (too wet and dark), but do alternative things that are a bit harder than the usual club run. Yesterday was a fartlek, and a good one too. I really enjoyed it.
Today: what: most likely 3-4m Why: I feel better when I get out every day Last hard: yesterday Last rest: Sunday. Lyrics: No. (should have got yesterday's)
Other news: we have since about a week a resident black wagtail birdie that hangs around the block of flats (and sometimes two. Mr and Mrs?). It even sits on the handles of the french doors and looks inside at what I'm up to. It's cute beyond belief. I just thought I had to share that.
Apologies for my rant against the sports injury industry; I let my frustrations get the better of me. In truth, it's like any other industry and has good practitioners and bad. Anyway, I've eaten humble pie, and I'm under another fizzio who hopefully falls into the former category. At least I'm not paying for this one
BR: The trouble is identifying what requires an easy session and what can be trained through. If I backed off for every niggle, I'd never get out of the door. But I suppose running it to destruction is not the cleverist way to find out what needs recovery.
posider - I have a triple with 30*26 bottom which worked well last time I did the Fred in 2007. I seem to recall you had a place that year but had to pull out due to injury. I rode some of the way with LizzieB and Mr B. Did you apply this year? I didn't see your name on the riders list.
Joe H - it used to confuse me as well. Basically it describes the gearing on the bike, so if you bottom gear is a 30*26 you have 30 teeth on the front cog and 26 teeth on the back at easiest gear.
tinebeest - I think I'm going to spend a lot of time in low gear.
ha, sorry for the gear speak SGQ. Podro no didn't apply this year - done it twice before and with it filling up so fast I wouldn't have been able to get a group to go up with, the guy I used to do sportives with has become obsessed with road racing and sees sportives as a bit of a distraction these days. I would like a go at getting under 7 hours - did 7.30 when I crashed and smashed my front wheel up which must have cost me at least half an hour - if I see any entries going closer to the day I might think about it.
I'll probably do the Leek Legbreaker, Phil and Friends (those two are quite local), Autumn Epic and then any others if there's a good group from my club going.
A good event if anyone is OK on a bike is the Long Eaton reliability on 1st Feb - only a pound to ride too.
With my thesis in, and training resuming properly, it's time to resume posting on here,
A brief scan of the last few days, suggested that there is the usual mix of good training, racing and injuries on here, so congrats to those that deserve it and healing wishes to those that need it.
TT - cheers for that...I think...the location and some of the symptoms sound correct, but a Google search inevitably brought up the horror stories and pictures of ankle surgery!!!
What: 4.6 miles including 2x1mile @ 7:40 pace with 800m recovery.
Why: Schedule.
Hit both slightly under targer - 7:37 and 7:35, but second had a slight breather while I waited for the traffic lights to change (it would be a little too muddy on the canal today).
Scobos - in my case it was just a little bit of tendonitis, possibly brought on by road camber. All that is required is some (relatively 'forceful') self massage on the affected area to break up the gristle to allow the tendon to move freely apparently.
AF - good to see you back - hope you have better luck with this physio.
What: No run - but did mow the lawns. Thought I'd be running a 5k in the evening - but just too hot to contemplate. Watched a movie with the gkids instead
AF, good on you. Hope Fizz 2 turns out better. Must say it didn't sound like a difficult problem to me. re BR's comment, I'd don't think backing off = stopping running, more like cutting the pace s bit or cutting out the reps. and seeing a fizz/massage therapist before the niggle stops you running, so you can run through it.
What: am 3.3 ml tootling with Tigger in the park; pm: 9.5ml inc track session: 4x800; 4x400; 4x800 Felt good on the first reps, and trying too hard to keep with training partner and so did them too fast. Pleased with the pace of some reps, but overall far to erratic, when I'm usually quite good at keeping them even,
What: 21 mins steady...legs felt very tired/stiff. Suspect this is because I spend most of my day on my feet, or from struggling for over an hour to change a tyre last night and the bending used a strange set of muscles! Anyway, it was a real plod! Why: Still living the dream. Last hard: Jan 2nd Last rest: 24/12 Lyrics: no.
AF: I was wondering what another fizz might say. I suspect my sports masseuse would favour much more aggressive treatment, and is a supporter of active rest (i.e. very low level running) coupled with lots of stretches for pretty well most injuries.
Progress is rarely a straight line. There are always bumps in the road, but you can make the choice to keep looking ahead.
not much time, but...AF - in the short term, another physio may be more helpful, however looking longer term - 2 overuse-type injuries relatively close together? - is there some underlying biomechanical issue to think about? Would something like this (for example) be any use to you?
