Packed yea right plenty time yet, you should see how muck kit we will have for Cateran then off to Cape Wrath for the week, I guess at least 8 pairs of shoes alone, My poor Bongo van will be bulging at the seems, and the bike on the back also.
I will wear seal skin socks, Inov@8 roclites and joe dana gaiters,
Gore trail shorts, gore short sleeve half zip and a buff, the only change that could then happen is gloves and a jacket which I will carry regardless of weather,
23 starters now, I know quite a few so have an idea who I will be sweeping, the mens race looks good with at least 4 good contenders, and only 3 ladies so that should be intresting also.
It will be friendly and social with good banter, but it is a race so heads down and go for it folks happy days.
Did I mention regardless of the weather it will be wet under foot.
Hi all - wow what a fantastic event - a million times better than London to Brighton. Thanks to Dario, karen and loon for making us so welcome. Have bigged it up on the ratings - will be back next year - hope you all had a great week at Cape Wrath
thanks again to Dario and team for such a fantastic event.. definitely planning to come back next year. Thanks also to Karen George and the whole gang who made us so welcome
Just a small question for the other runners who completed the race. As this was my first Ultra I am unsure if last Saturday was a really tough Ultra, normal hard Ultra or an easy one (if there is such a thing!).
Where would the experienced Ultra runners place the race on a rating of easy to very hard?
Hi guys, glad you all got home safe and sound and huge well done to you all. What a great weekend we all had part of and hope race goes from strength to strength. Cape wrath was fantastic too and i ran my best ever and even got competitive for the first time!!
Raymond i've only done 2 ultra races, a 42 and a 53 both on the whw and i'd say the cateran similar in toughness to those 2 even although terrain different. The 2 i've done less muddy but more rocky. You've got the ultra bug now me thinks.
glad you enjoyed cape wrath Karen. Seems odd somehowe tonight sitting here with my Guinness when only a week ago we was out in them there hills. Definitely planning to come up again some time next year maybe for the Fling and mayeb for cataran again and who knows maybe both.
Pics are fab guys and you'll get the same warm welcome for fling or cape wrath or cateran. All brilliant events. Cape Wrath scenery out of this world, makes you realise you need to get out and explore for sure. This week just been a whirlwind of running and races and socialising, what a tough life indeedy
Great photos, and a great week 5 races and loads of Guinness.
Raymond , its a matter of what you are training for and what terain you like.
Cateran because its circle nature felt like you were always heading home, and leant its self to easy suport points. no real hills if your training for steep stuff but the wet under foot would have a lot of people say it was hard if used to road ultras,
I think with the mix of terrain etc I would clas it as a moderate Ultra, its so subjective , not an easy question to answer.
Times were faster on the 55 mile Cateran than on the 53 mile fling and that surprised me.
Karen - doing Bo-bo's avatar was job number 1 when we got home! We both had a ball with you guys - and Bobo is definitely planning to return next year - and we will be following your example and sleeping in the Camper rather than the hotel.
Better late than never....a few words/thoughts on the Cateran Trail.
I realised after my first DD that the "ultra" is frequented by some of the friendliest runners who celebrate the efforts of all on the start line regardless of speed etc 10 mins in Loon Dod's, KarenD's, & Dario's company on Fri evening I knew we were in good hands.
The Saturday 4am alarm call brought better weather than anticipated -I've decided that the term rain applies only when you can physically see it falling in long vertical shafts - I think we quickly settled into our pace, watching the front of the field snake up and across the first uplift ! - then they were suddenly below us in the valley?! we had missed a stile - a scramble over an 8ft deer fence and we realised we better concenrate more. Many thanks to Loon Dod who kept us on course throughout his watch.
Ups, downs, forests, castles, cows with horns, streams, bogs, chatter & laughter. Fantastic support crew - as ever - JFDI & PSC are the best, they even knew what I wanted at 40 miles when I didn't!
It was tough, but worth it - around 45 miles I began to suffer with a form of vertigo- stemmed ginger got me to 50 but i was feeling rough as we approached the sting in the tail - I tried to urge MF7 on but my perfect gent and running partner refused to leave me - thank you. The support from all the sweepers on that last section was terrific.
