You have a colleague at work who has a serious personal hygiene problem. It is sufficiently bad that other members of your department avoid spending time around this person due to their smell and have been known to gossip about said person. The colleague is of genuine character and a good worker.

What do you do?
Same answer as Wednesdays dilemma. Set them on fire
I had this once on a weeks' long course. I was sitting next to a woman who kept taking her shoes off and her feet smelt so bad. I couldn't focus or concentrate and every minute felt like forever. By day 2 I started shifting a bit further and further from her until she asked me if there was something wrong. I told her that it was her feet. She put her shoes back on and never really spoke to me again.
I had a similar problem, years ago. I offered the person some antiperspirant that I was 'allergic' to. she said 'no thanks, I never use that sort of thing' and swanned off
The problem also extends to coffee breath people. As I don't drink the stuff I can really smell it on someone and if a dentist or someone is breathing it on me, its really not pleasant.
Agree with AL about 'coffee breath' too! I do drink coffee occasionally and really enjoy it. However, I find it really nauseating on someone else's breath.
We had this at an old company. People made formal H&S complaints as they were literally retching. Every year he got shower gel and shampoo for the xmas secret Santa. You really couldn't go near him during most of summer when he was especially ripe.
Honestly, there were flies buzzing round him in the office.
This happened at a karate club I used to go to. one of the instructors was a minger! His suit was obviously never washed (kinda grey with mucky marks on it) and his feet were black and he just stank of sweat..... After complaining to the head instructor guy (I can't remember what they're supposed to be called!) he took the guy aside and subtly told him...."Paddy...ye stink....wash your suit and have a bath!!" LOL....he took the advice but i think it was short lived....back to stinky within a fortnight!
Gingie - that's awful! We were kicked out of the dojo if our gi's weren't properly white and ironed. We had to be totally presentable. Nails and toe nails have to be short and if they aren't, you get asked to leave.
A cleaner where I worked a few years ago had a special aroma which hung around once she'd moved offices, we were debating who should tell her right up to the point one of my colleagues walked into the open plan office "f*ck me the cleaner's been in here it stinks" she said, unfortunately the cleaner was under one of the desks picking up some rubbish she'd dropped, message received and understood!

What do you do?You tell them that they're a good worker and how much you appreciate their efforts but the staff have an issue with their personal hygiene........
Or you wimp out and get HR to do it
like what Mr W said
Funnily enough, we do have such a person in the office but his "fragrance" isn't so bad that anyone's plucked up the courage to bring the subject up.
And he doesn't work for me so it wouldn't be my responsibility to talk to him.
The only way to deal with it is to speak to the person.
Naturally, no-one wants to do this, but there is no other way.
Unless you leave an anonymous note on their desk:
Dear Colleague,
Please have a shower in the morning before coming to work.
Regards,
Your Colleagues
*sprays deodorant and swills listerine*
You only had to say guys.......

Open a window.
Buy a fan.
Wear corks in your nostrils.
They will soon get the idea.
Pingu - I think that if you shower at least once a day (particularly if it's in the morning) and use a deodorant, you are really not likely to smell.
Bad breath could be another matter though....... (eats another mint just in case)
D74 - what happened in the end?
Anyone see the program on this a while ago linky_thing, must be awful.
Agree Wilkie - though people that overdo hairspray and deodorants are just as bad!
I like coffee and if others don't like the smell of it on my breath, then sorry but tough shit. It's not like smoking or having stinky pits, is it?

Head instructor guy = sensei
Black belt, me!
So don't p*ss me off either......
