    Hi everyone

I've not been around much lately as I've had a bad back and been unable to run.  I had a steroid injection a couple of weeks ago, and to be honest it's not made much difference.

I'm feeling very fed up.  Back to the doctor's later this week.  image

Hope you're all feeling much better than me!

  • Options

aww Sue I'm sorry to hear that! There's nothing worse than not having the option to run, but it wont be forever! At least your back has time to heal ready for you to hit the trail again image

Sue thats really bad i know how bad I've felt not being able to run for 2 weeks - hopefully the drs will have some good news later this week.

Thanks Rikku and Sassy.  I haven't been able to run for about a month now and I'm finding it terribly frustrating!   I'll probably have to start all over again with 1 minute run - 1 minute walk when I finally am able to get out.  Oh well - I'm sure there'll be plenty of support and help here on this forum!

    Hello everyone!

Thought I would re-join thread. I took up 'running' in January but lost my way after a few weeks and just getting back into it now.

My biggest problem is years of smoking which have definately taken their toll. I gave up in January which prompted the interest in running but was back on them after about 3 months and of course the running went out the window.

I've had a strong word with myself and quit again almost 3 weeks ago and started the running again this week.

I'm a pathetically slow runner and have lousy stamina! I've started back on run 2/walk 1 for 6 reps which is nearly killing me.

Today is a rest day but will be back out there tomorrow. Good to see there are so many in the same boat.

LisahC, well done on giving up smoking!  That's a great thing to do for yourself.

The stamina will improve slowly but surely.  Just keep at it.

Well done, and keep us informed on how you're getting on!

    Welcome Lishc

It does get easier in my case slowly but am nearly running all my 1.5 miles just 3 short walks within. Keep at it and good luck

i cant wait to increase my running - im actually doing 5k now but can only do short bursts of running when i stop. sometimes i dont even need to stop but its become a habit - any ideas on how i get over this?

and sounds really daft - but does anyone else forget to breathe when they run? im so proud that im running that the breathing goes out of the window

    Hi All

Just back from my SAturday morning plod round the track! Upped the ante today to R3/W1 x 5 which was definately the upper limit of my stamina at the moment!

Did a crazy thing yesterday morning as I decided I need a goal to work to so I enter the Adidas womens 5k challenge in London on 6th September. As you can imagine it all seemed like a good idea at the time but now am more than a little worried!

Its only 6 weeks to get up to 5k level. I usually add a minute per week to my running intervals which is going to be nowhere near the 40 min I need.

On a positive note I will be running for Mind (the mental health charity) and they are going to provide me with a T-shirt with my name on it so at least I will look the part even if I end up walking loads.

So fellow sub-5kers, I will be looking for lots of support in the coming weeks and if any girlies out there fancy joining me for the race, please feel free!

Now I'm off for a long shower followed by a long lay down! x

well done LisahC sometimes we need something to push us that bit further.

and dont matter if your slow or dont run much - your doing it for a fab cause and are giving it your all.

    well done

Did 2 laps of 1.6 miles run walk on Sat am with the dog.

Then out this morning and just pootled around for 1 lap.

Nothing massive but feel ive taken a step forward by commiting to 3 runs this week.

Im trying to balance not doing too much with the knowledge I need to steadily increase my mileage up to October.

Hope everyone else is doing OK.

Hi all, I am new to this running lark (well, I used to run but that was quite a bit ago) and have just finished my first week of running/walking.I ran 3 times for 10 x 1 min run/1 min walk each time.

I decided to start exercising due to the fact that I was quite a bit overweight. At the beginning of June I weighed 16st 13lb and I am gonna try and get down to 11st eventually.

As of today I am down to 15st 13lb, I have now started to run 3 times a week and play squash 1-2 times a week.

I am aiming at running a 5k on the 27th September.......

  • Options

...I'm doing a race on the 27th too - thought I'd enter another one to give me a goal. I'm aiming at doing that every 2-3 months so I don't let it lapse. I'm doing the Leeds Tree-athlon, which is really just a groovy name and nothing to so with biking or swimming! It's a proper tree-hugging type thing, but looks great as I've already got my free T-shirt and number, and I think finishers get a sapling of their own to plant! Sweeeet.

Can't seem to break the 12-min mile thing, but I guess that comes with time, and running for more than 5 mins straight is difficult. But do people find that the more they do it, the stronger they get?! I guess patience is the key, I've only been doing this since March. Motivation is another thing - it's soooo easy just to watch TV or do something else 'important' (like work!) but really, going for a couple or three miles is only half an hour or so out of the day when you think about it!

    Hi all

Just thought i'd check in managed to run all of my usual 1.6 miles round the block the last 3 runs so am going to up the distance in the morning to about 2 miles.  Hope everyone else is doing well.

    Morning all

     Just checking in....

Got out this morning after a week off and managed a 20 min stagger round the park consisting of R4/W1 x 5. I must say it nearly finished me off! God only knows how I am going to manage a 5k in one months time!

Hope everyone else is feeling motivated and getting out there too?

  • Options
hmmmmm.... I'm finding that I've a lot of work on at the moment so have lapsed for a few days, which is frustrating as a few days out seems to put me back to square one. But I've a clear weekend, so I'm definitely going to pick it up again then! Can't seem to run more than four mins at a time, but I guess this comes in time. The weather's not very motivational, either, but I think you have to turn it round and think that cooler, wetter weather is actually better to run in! I definitely want to improve on my 5K time of 37 mins so gotta step it up!

    Dear All,

Hope you dont mind me joining but this appeared to be the most suitable forum for me. I used to be very active until an ankle injury at 35 which stopped my football. Since then I have done very little and I am now 47 and at least 1 stone overwheight. I am hoping a forum like this can help to motivate me.

Have just started to run again this week and have been shocked by my lack of fitness. As the nickname suggests above my final aim would be to run a 10K. That is a long way off as 2K is my limit at the minute.

    Hi all

Welcome 45plus, just thought I'd say i have finally managed to run 2.25 miles none stop and feel so good even had a small hill in it. 5 k is looking not so out of reach.

    Hello everyone!

I've been on RW on and off over the past few months, less so recently. I keep trying to get into running and then something comes up that stalls me. Most recently it's been a shoulder/neck injury, which was (is) pretty painful, but it's now being 'managed' (by me, no thanks to my GP who has been useless!)

So hopefully I can get back into running now that I'm not in quite so much pain. Massively unfit, turning into jelly, and I don't want to start my 30s (turn 30 in December) a whole dress size/stone heavier than I started my 20s!

  • Options
As a general rule I'd advise taking injuries to a sports masseur or physio specialising in sporting injuries rather than a GP - most of them know very little about running-related injuries and tend to just fall back on telling you not to run if it hurts!
  • Options

I'm keeping on with it too.... ran for a whole K for the first time today, about 7 mins, which I know is fairly crud but every little helps. One small step for everyone else, a giant leap for me, etc. I find it's my legs feel tired before I do, so hopefully I'll build up strength slowly but surely. It's motivation that's the main problem, but I'm finding if I get home from work and go STRAIGHT out, and not have tea and get settled, then I can do it.

Doing the Trees for Cities 5K at the end of the month in Leeds, and really would like to do it in around 35 mins, which would be a big achievement for me.

Well done and keep at it Hullcity Sam we will all get there - Im entering a local 4k fun run at end of the month not sure what time im aiming for just running all of it will be good. Im getting there slowly but if I think to when I started 10 metres was my limit. image

Hi all, I get the sam as you HullCitySam, my legs get tired and sore way before I do and if I don't go as soon as I get in from work I wouldn't go!!

I have been struggling with 5km for a while now and am signed up for a cancer research 10km in about 7 weeks... I manage 5km some weeks and other even 1 imileis a problem... it is so frustrating!! Argh, does anyone else have this type of inconistency and any suggestions?

    HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Have had a nightmare couple of months.

Had a pain in the sole of my foot - just underneath the big toe. Incredibly painful. Went to the docs and he told me i had gout!! I was flabbergasted - having lost 3 stone since befors Christmas - and the sensible diet this entailed. Oh the irony!

I then managed to hurt my back whilst trimming hedges from the top of a ladder.

    Anyway the good news

Went out today for the first time in ages and managed to stagger along for 20 mins non stop.

So glad to have made that first step - again.

Sorry ive not been around for  a while - and how the devil are u all doing?
