dont want to sound stupidly obvious

but would walking ur run course or time or distance help both in ur recovery and prepping for ur next run?

  • sorry slowjoe im not quite sure i know what you mean.
  • LOL thats ok

reading it again neither do I.

What Im asking is can u go out walking whilst getting ready for ur next run?

  • yea i could, not the same though is it?  went for a cycle today as i thought it'd be slightly easier on the legs.  As it turned out probably would've been the same going out for a jog.

  • Just thought it might help with the recovery process - and my understanding is that time on feet is important?

    Anyway

Just been out and ran  a mile - YAAAAAAY

took me 14 minutes - BOOOOOOOOOO

then another 6 mins walk run to hit 20 mins

  • yea that is true, thanks.

congrats on being able to run a mile, thats really good image

  • Thanks - but I really could walk faster lol.
  • Mnj, it's probably DOMS, Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness and takes 2-3 maybe even 4 days to completely go, don't push too early you'll put yourself out of action for longer.

  • Hey all, went back to running yesterday after three weeks off image. Took it really easy, just over a mile running at a pace of 10.40 p/m which is thankfully not much slower than my pre-injury time, yay.

Then I just ran-walked home, want to ease myself back in gently.

Good running all - Well done Slowjoe, that's a great milestone to reach (excuse the pun!)

  • Hi guys,

Well done, you are all doing so well.

I'm still doing my Walk/run program.  I didn't run for just over a week so I repeated my last session.  I went ok.  Overall I covered 2.4 km in 20 mins.  I aiming to do 5km in under 30min.  I have done that in the past but I was much fitter.

     Keep it up, Al.

  • Thanks to all for the encouragement

Have ran the last 2 nights

    night off tonight

might go for a swim work permitting

  • 2 Miles on the treadmill! YAY pretty much dead on 20 minutes most of it was run at 6 mph the last minute I sped up to 7 to try and compensate for the time to get up to speed.... feeling pretty happy with myself, especially because I still had enough in the tank to cope with the quicker pace at the end...

    YAY!

  • Well done indeed. I can't wait to be able to run for a solid 15 minutes. I think it's a milestone I need to aim for then after that who knows.

    Well done TeePeeDee.

  • Well done everyone on the running.

The legs felt better today so went out for a very slow jog.  Managed to jog 20minutes without stopping - i'm amazed at myself.  Although I used to be able to run that far it was a very long time ago and I thought it would take me alot longer to get back up to running for that long.  Calculated it on mapmyrun as 1.75 miles so an average of just over 11minutes for a mile image

  • Hey all,

Everyone is doing really well, keep at it!

Was supposed to do 2 miles today but I was at a wedding reception last night so I'm tired and achey from all the dancing (and wine!) so I'm postponing it until tomorrow and will have to play with the schedule a bit this week. Having been off with my knee before I don't want to risk it seeing as being in high heels all night has tired them out. Thought I'd be fine to go out today, if I'd known I'd be so tired I'd have run on Saturday, bit disappointed but needs must I guess image

Wishing everyone a good week of running ahead. Who watched the marathon? That'll be us soon enough image

  • Hi everyone, been reading your thread and I'd like to join in if thats ok.

Got the R4L in July so thats my aim. Having done it previous walk/run I'd love to make it round without stopping. Currently on wk4 of the 0 to 30 schedule.

I watched the marathon, always do but couldnt see myself actually doing one. This 5km would be an amazing achievement for me.

  • Hi,

I've just started (again, after many years of on/off attempts) and am following the 0-30 schedule, also trying to drag my sister into doing some structured training, as she's doing the R4L and so far has no plans for training.

Have done the right thing and got myself down to Runnersworld for a good 30 mins of 'try these, run in these, ok, now try these... ', now I'm all sorted on the footwear, I just need to work on a slow build up and make running a habit.

Would be nice to be the 4 weeks into the schedule where you are Gem C, I'll be there in no time (well, 4 weeks). image

  • Hi Antihero, I cheated and started at week 3 though lol This will be my 6th R4L but these year I'd love to jog/plod round without stopping if I can. Main thing really is taking part for that series of events. Glad you've got your trainers sorted.

I'm doing a 5km "fun run" this sunday. I know I cant get round yet but I'm going to do my best with a few (ok, probably a lot) of walk breaks just have this thing inside me to enter a race. Someone has to come last dont they image

  • Evening all.

Went out for 3 mins run 1 min walk x 5 round the football fields.

Been feeling a little achy around the knees so thought the softer surface would help.

No aches afterwards and altho Im not setting the world alight as I was running I was thinking about when I couldnt jog the length of the pitch.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

  • More YAYs!!!

20 minutes on the treadmill at 6.5 mph, and while I think I may be in danger of getting on a 20 minute rut, (from minutes 9 to 15 I feel I am clinging on for dear life till I can see any light at the end of the running tunnel), I am pretty happy I upped the speed and still made it to the end of the 20..

Hopefully this should when I get a little more time equate to a longer run at a more comfortable pace, and a (VERY) slow 5K may not be so far away.

Congratulations  to everyone who seems to be doing well right now! Great Motivation technique Slowjoe concerntrating on how far you have come WOO!

  • Wow TeePeeDee, thats fast compared to me, I'm on wk 4 of the RW schedule my run sections are 5.2 to 6mph and thats only for 5minute intervals right now so 20minutes of that would finish me I think. Are you following a plan or just doing what feels right for you?

Slowjoe, thats great progress. Well done.

  • In January 2007 I lost my Mum to cancer and was weighing in at 15.5st.  I hadn't done any proper exercise for some time and this was disappointing as I had been pretty active in my younger years.

I decided to try and improve my health, raise money for charity and also get some time alone to think.

    Running offered those things.

My first run was 1.4 miles and I felt like I'd nearly died but I'm pretty determined so put on a brave face.  I was very disappointed in how my fitness had diminished and was expecting to do the same thing I'd done in the past when trying to start running.  Try to run too far and too fast, get injuries and give up.

Thankfully, some friendly work colleagues were keen runners and took me under their wing, starting slow (12 minute mile) and not running any further than 2 miles per run, 3 times per week.  It remained like that for a period of 2 weeks and without realising my pace had improved rapidly to around 10's.

The next step was getting time on my feet.  So, no increase in pace, just mileage.

Now I did something very reckless after my third week of running and entered a 10k race.  Nothing unusual there other than the race was in 8 weeks time.

Lots of reading, great advice from friends, Runners World and fellow runners.  Good training plan and I managed by first 10k race for charity and came home in 55 mins, which I was pleased with.

Since then I've joined a running club, raced a summer and winter league (2007/08), run a half marathon and improved 10k race time to 48mins.  I then decided to take some time off and stopped running for most of 2008.

In less than 5 weeks time, I run Edinburgh Marathon....  All 26.2 miles of it (hopefully).  Training has been hard but I hope worth it.

It is possible and you will succeed in reaching your targets if you are sensible, follow advice and don't over-train into injury!  Gradual improvements are the key and at times you will suddenly find you make big gains that really boost the confidence but there will also be many plateau's in those improvements that must not dishearten your efforts!

Good luck to all and keep at it.

  • Gem I guess you could say in many ways I am pretty unstructured (OK I admit both in training plans and life image ), I started about a month or so ago half running walking (very short distance between the 2) round a circuit that was probably about 2.5 miles,  I gradually started building in longer and longer initial runs before resorting to walk/running and while I found I needed a little more recovery before daring to run again I would then make sure the rest of the run the ratio of running to walking was improving.

I first hit the treadmill about 2 weeks ago and I found the ability to set a steady pace helped alot...my first session I managed 18 minute and since then I have managed 20 minutes at improving pace. The aim at the moment is to reach my goal of being able to run 5K by may the 16th...  when there is a 3K fun run I am entered into.... 3K I am not particularly worried though it's supposedly a very hilly course which is filling me with dread! OUCH!

Martin that's pretty inspirational to us still struggling to make this distance. Good luck for the Marathon!

  • No run today.

Glad to see everyone doing OK

Went for a swim for half an hour instead.

  • image 3x 6mins was the plan today, but it went horribly wrong and I couldnt stop the last run and it ended up as 12mins one.  Hope I dont regret it tomorrow, but I feel pretty chuffed three weeks ago a 2 mins run nearly was a really struggle.

Keep up the good work folks

  • Way to go Legs in Pain!!
  • I have been following a 10 week plan to get to 30mins, I am now at the end of week 4 and off plan.

This morning I was feeling good even after doing more than I planned 2 days ago so I decided to keep going till rather stop after 7 minutes for a walk.  End result 2 x 12 mins runs with 3 minute walk, used mapmyrun for the first time and worked out that I had covered 4km so I am pretty confident I will be able to do my first 5km race in 6 weeks without stopping.

Wow this running is addictive, cant believe how good I feel.  £70 on new shoes was very good motivation

  • This is a very motivational thread for me to read!  I'm on week 5 of a beginners programme, and have managed to get up to 3 mins run / 1 min walk for 24 mins, every other day.  I go very slowly, and my progress is very slow!  I have to keep reminding myself that when I first started I could only run for 30 seconds at a time, and that I AM progressing, albeit slowly!

I'm really enjoying my early morning runs - I'm lucky that I have some lovely countryside close to where I live.  I just wish my progress was faster!

  • Steady steady steady....  That's the key in the beginning.

Pace will come with time, if you want it to.  Enjoying the run and potentially socialising too is a benefit.  Running with friends, going at a pace where you can keep up a conversation is the way forwards during training.

Don't get caught up with the mileages and times unless you feel it is of benefit and part of your goals.

Running is essentially the easiest "sport" in the world.  Afterall we generally learn how to do it very young and it comes pretty natural.  Although managing to do it without injury and maintaining enjoyment is an interesting challenge.

    Keep on going...

  • Can I please join in?

Two weeks ago I weighed in at 17st 0.5 lbs and I am only 5' 4"!  I couldn't walk upstairs without getting pain in my knees and out of breath. (I blamed the fact it was warmer upstairs and there was a lack of oxygen!).  So I decided enough was enough, and went to Weightwatchers.  First week I lost 7lbs.  So the second week I thought I'd try running and ended up being directed here from WW online.

I found the beginners programme (which I think some of you seem to be doing).  I was all geared up to go on my first run but then read about shoes, so I ordered some, went and bought some running clothes and went on Sunday.  I did a five minute brisk warm up walk, and then started on the running (30s run/ 90s walk) and only managed five reps before coming home.  But I felt really good.

This morning was my second (after a rest day).  I started well but only managed four reps as my legs still ached from the first one.  But I am not disheartened, I shall go again on Thursday morning.  I weighed in again today and two weeks I have lost 12.5lbs in total.

One question I do have for the women, which no-one ever seems to mention: Does your TOTM affect the stamina in your run?  I only wondered if this is what slowed me down this morning.  Well, not slowed me down but definitely affected my stamina.  Combined with the rain and the headwind of course!

Where do I find information on 5k runs?  I am not ready to enter one at all, but I'd like to have a look and get a feel for it IYKWIM?

thanks, and looking forward to getting to know some of you better!
