    have tried Farcebook - crap

am trying twitter for business use - so far crap

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that most social network sites are crap

the only one of any use is LinkedIn (business network)

I hear different reports about twitter, that if you're celeb crazy its great to have little bits if info about them all the time but then others say following minor celebs is just sad.

Does twitter just feed the ego....ie look how great my life is...all these things I'm doing.

Or can it be fun for us normal peeps, randomly stating what we're doing?

    How're you finding Corinth?

Facebook - Nice easy way to keep in contact with mates without having to email them all constantly, especially as many of them don't even live in the same country.

RW - Gives me something to do at work, thus stopping me from going mental.

Twitter - Not even looked at it so couldn't say.

Oh and if I went on twitter I'd follow Lance Armstrong (and probably all other cycling pro's and explorers and adventurers) all day no doubt, no maybe that's why it's a good idea I don't go on there.

you do tend to get followed on twitter by some weird people - but as anon says, you can block them...............

feck me I'm agreeing with anon which is rare!

I personally think both are very different, and if you so need both, can happily co-exist with each other.

I use FB to keep in contact with old friends, family, share pictures, videos etc.

TBH, I don't, and can't see no point in using twitter, it just seems like the "what are you doing now" bit in FB, and TBH, I don't really think people are that interested in what I think to follow me on twitter!!!.

I can see the use in twitter for following infomation on things you are interested in, I am a bit of a gamer, and recently a lot of news has been leaked first on twitter.

I like FB now but thought it was crap at first but it got a lot better the more friends joined and now I think it's a great way of keeping in touch with people.  I found old friends on FB I had lost touch with and would have never found again otherwise, for example people I met travelling etc.

RW... I keep to 3 or 4 threads mainly and I think I'm definetely coming out of my honeymoon phase with it.  I find myself spending more time on FB or normal email mailing RW friends but chatting off site.

Twitter... never joined. have seen it. Doesn't hold much appeal for me personally.

Me neither, Nam. I'm on it but it's not so good and I'm not that fussed that Stephen Fry has the sh*ts really...image

Stephen Fry is probably the only person who's status update I'd be interested in. LOL

I can't see much point in Twitter - I don't really have any interest in what Stephen Fry is doing at ANY time.

I don't use facebook either, although I am on it, as our running club has a group on there.

Mostly my friends and I actually talk to each other.  How old fashioned!

    I agree totally Mrs Wilks!

I can't even begin to imagine what my phone bill would look like if I talked to my friends other than those local, considering how many of them live abroad...

    Doing ok ALimage

I tried FaceB but chucked it after a few months - I'm not really supposed to have it as I very occasionally work in prisons... and I don't want 'big arry' from B wing paying me a visit.

I reinitiate my profile every few months to check out the talent (LBimage)

    Twitter just scares me

Corinth good point about the work that you do.  Had FB been around in the days when I worked in forensic mental health / probation / custody, there is no chance I would have used it!

I'm a new convert to FB...I love it!  I also reconnected with a friend of mine who I haven't seen in 15 years (she moved to Canada to live and we lost touch) it was really nice to catch up.  Plus I admit to FB stalking and love to see wahts going on in other peoples lives!!  image

I don't use either one - I joined twitter but after a couple of messages telling me that people I've never heard of are now following me I dumped it. I find it scary.

Don't blame you Nam - FaceB can be used by some people to find out an awful lot about you.  The information you give out at any one time is pretty scanty and usually harmless, but taken cumulatively, you can build up a very good picture of a person's habits; lifestyle; etc.

I watched a demo by an IT security consultant who in a very short time had enough information from a colleague's Bebo and Facebook account to be able to obtain a birth certificate; passport; and bank details.

Some of the more insidious stuff is those attachments which ask you seemingly harmless questions like 'Take your mother's maiden name and your pet's name and make up a porn name'... quite a few people use these details in passwords etc

Another one I saw recently is: 'Divide your birth date by the number of your house to give your 'heart' number'... followed a few weeks later by 'give yourself a professor name - used the name of the street you live in as your first name and your school as your second name  EG "Neasdon St Micheal"... (oh, so you live at number 29 Neasdon Road and you're going to France for two weeks - very useful)

Most people ignore these and don't pass them on... but some do... and this information can be very useful.  Most of it is available off-line... but why bother wasting shoeleather when you can get it by just logging on?

(BTW I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Facebook and its clones... just be careful)image

If you set up the security on FB properly - surely its only people you allow to be your friends get to see any info on you ?

I want to use . . . . . whichever one most of my family and friends are on . . . . which turns out to be facebook.  I just reject all the play a game / send a hug / do a survey crap that it showers on me. That only takes a few seconds. I use it to share photos and thoughts and keep in touch.

corinth - if you want to see how lax people are with their information - work in recruitment.......

we see people's names, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, dates of birth, partner and kids names, NI numbers - and sometimes passport numbers - on their CV's.

OK - not so bad you may think as we are bound by data protection and various laws so can't use this personal information for gain without Mr Plod beating a hasty path to our door....

but I'm talking here about CV's posted on CV websites like Monster which can be read by anyone with access - which even if you pay for access isn't that much compared to the gains you could make....

    quite quite amazing

The people who create these apps have access to the info so you have to fairly careful what you add. I just use FB to keep in contact with old friends from work etc. and ignore any apps.

BTW - can somebody tell me the point of sending a virtual pint on FB??? keep getting sent them,  pointless as I can't drink the things..... maybe i'm just getting more miserable with age image

I know he looks - he told me! image I've got this idea in my head that Corrie is a bit of a hunk......image

Corrie - I was under the impression that mine is fairly locked down. How much can you access? I agree totally about the security problems. A while ago, there was a big set of questions floating round that you could ask and post to your mates. Many of them were the sort of thing that banks ask as security questions and yet almost everyone told me their mother's maiden name and the name of their first pet! image

Well... LB.. I know all about your secret crush on Mikel Arteta and your penchant for going commando whilst wearing leggings... and your favourite perfume at the moment is 'Woman' by DKNY and you listened to Rhianna on your last morning drive;  I'm not keen on your bedroom decor - I prefer the 'rustic' look rather than all creams and neutral colours... oh and stop leaving your keys under that flowerpot... very laximage

Bit of a hunk.... hmmm... I'm not bad for a Sting lookalike I suppose... but bit of a hunk is stretching it.
