    Gym's don't suit me - it's too time consuming - but those who use them i wish them well

    as for my running, what bit i do and what  little i understand about running  - I'm 51 years old, i'm 6ft, and a skinny git, i cannot change what i am - and i'm not sure i'd really want to

    after many years of solo running, the last 7 yeras and 2 months have been all races pushing my disabled NOW 21 year old in his wheelchair

     somtimes i race the clock, somtimes i run purely for fun, and see the finish time at the end - but i do have one   question for anyone,

    I'm fit, i'm happy

    Micknphil, we all know you are legend- keep it up my good man

    I'm a not so skinny runner about 12 stone but my bod and especially my legs are in good shape. I look around at my colleagues about the same age at work who sometimes treat career success as an excuse to give up on their health and fitness.

    However the tri guys and girls have the better bodies than us runners- youy can usually spot them in races from the V shaped back and muscular arms. I'd give it a go if I had the time.

    Well folks I have finaly found a happy medium.I am now running tuesday,thursday,friday and sunday.Weekly mileage between 30-40 miles.On monday, wednesday, and friday I use the gym for a structured workout,Monday chest and biceps,Wednesday Shoulder and abs,Friday calfs and quads.All of the above workouts are helping me to achieve a good level of fitness and strength.I hope to include some swimming sessions in the future and as soon as i can afford a reasonable used bike I am going to have a go at training for a triathlon.I think micknphil summed it up " i`m fit I`m happy  "

    PS slug I have some golf clubs for sale.I decided to give it up as most golfers seemed to be fat middle aged business men with loads of money.I deffianately do not fall into any of those catagories.

    I dont think either end of the spectrum is a particularly good look... Skinny blokes dont do it for me and neither do the knucklehead grunting goons at the gym.  The bloke minding his own business with a nicely toned bod will get my vote every time.

    It looks like you've found a happy medium, although that looks like a LOT of training to me... But then again I do my best to get away with doing as little as possible to keep my fitness up and my weight down.

    I was torn between the two aswell. And I've opted for running 4times a week, the gym no times!!!! Agghhhh. Never thought I'd do it. And I still pay the place £26 per month and I haven't set foot in the palce for three months! After I've done the GNR I'll do a bit of both. probably run two times a week and 2 heavy weights sessions per week. The two can be combined. And then if I fancy entering another half or full marathon I'll knock the heavyweights on the head and beast the cardio again.

    I do the same Brad, there's no reason why you can't do both cardio stuff (runningcyclingswimming) and weight lifting/bodybuilding.

    It does give you a good kind-of middle ground between being very skinny and built like a brick sh*thouse and, personally, I like the variety of the different training as well. 

    On the downside, it does mean that I'll never do either discipline as well as if I just focused on one but seeing as I'm not exactly going to break records in either it doesn't really matter.

    One thing I did find when I first tried mixing the two was that it made me ill! I was running four times a week and on the days in between doing 3 full body workouts. I felt I was coping with it and then bang, felt like shit for a week and so weak. So knocked it on the head.

    In the new year i'll be starting a new regime where i'll be doing a kettlebell workout (3 times a week mon,wed,fri) when i wake up then cycling into work (3miles) and back again (all 5 week days) then doing my long slow run on a Sunday and maybe squeeze in a shorter run of an evening if I can handle it!

    I quite fancy taking up climbing. And not because I want to shag Sciance. Well, "not just", anyway. Where does one start? Should one go to a specialist climbing shop to get an appropriate rope fitted, or will any old bit of string from JJB do?

    And then do you just get a train down to Beachy Head, and start at the bottom?

    I have to agree with the first poster that the 'skin and bone' type of runner is not a good look(male or female)image

    The musclebound look isnt great either imho

    The fitness benefits of running far outweigh any negatives though

    You can carry muscle and run, you just have to make sure your diet is correct. It will make running harder though as your heart is going to be catering for more muscle mass. And it'll put more strain on your knees and ankles as you'll be carrying more mass. If your feeding your body the correct nutrients whilst running there's no reason for your body to eat into your muscle.

    ...Candy dont be silly - you would be best to start off with a few tow ropes from Halfords tied together.

    You would also need to get to the bottom of BH, jumping would clearly be the quickest...aim for a deep bit of water though.

    If you are doign gym weights etc etc....glutes would be one of the most of the important area to focus on...as theyre the powerhouse of your running - and they are often overlooked. Upper back and chest worth doing, as they help with drive and holding your form.

    Hello

    I am quite interested in this as I am now shedding weight gained earlier in the year by swimming, cycling and running. Not running as much as before, but then I never cycled or swam before - but the old Body fat is not coming down as quick as I would like, or anywhere near like as quick as weight. I guess I need to up resistance work - so I would advocate a bit of both. Lots of cardio, bit of resistance and weights.

    Dunno though - I have never been able to strike the right balance. Always seem to  be watching what I eat and that body fat number.

    I too, would love to see the pictures Nam. My imagination is going into overdrive.

    Rodduz - I think the key to doing both running and weight-lifting is not to go flat out every session and overdo it. Doing a full body workout 3 times a week is definitely too much and will leave your body too exhausted to reap the rewards of your efforts. Don't forget what you're effectively doing in the gym is breaking the muscle down so it can grow back stronger during rest days. Doing a full body workout each time you go means every muscle group is getting hit 3 times a week which doesn't give it enough time to rebuild. Most body-building programs advocate a 3 day split focusing on a different muscle group each time and keeping each session under an hour in length.

    Similarly with running, you don't want to go out and run flat out every time, at least one session a week should be at an easy pace.

    Yeah thats what i do sheddy.I also use a program that tones muscle rather than body building.I deffinately dont rip myself to shreds in the gym.I think a mixture of cardio and weights is the way forward.
