Are Orthotics really THAT brilliant?

  • Hi Sophers

Well I gave in and did my 800m interval sessions yesterday. First ones were kind of run-limp but better after that. A bit of pain last night and this morning but not completely unbearable. Then did PT session who has adjusted new trainers, loosened off foot and reduced pain and says go go a 10 miler this weekend. So fingers crossed there.

BMF !! I should have guessed.

  • ooh Tony, footman will give you a row  image

hope the 10 miler goes well, have a nice weekend!  image

  • Well didn't do 10 miler as my lovely wife is in London and couldn't do the "pick up the wreck" routine so I did an out and back around Dunblane for 8 miler. Not at all fast time so not running distance for 10 days showing (plus being up till 6am Saturday morning after blow-out with mate I hadn't seen in a while).

Now off to tidy up and make sure lots of stretches and see how things feel later and tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Btw orthotics so much more easier to use now that I have removed insoles from new trainers. Yes I was that idiot who left the original insoles in and then wondered why the orthotics seemed to make me come out of the trainer and were bl**dy sore. Lesson : remember to read the instructions next time although this will of course have to overcome male nature not to image

Hope your weekends going well folks.

Footman: what break in routine do you use for running with new orthotics. I have internal, tempo and long run each week. I was thinking of using them for intervals first then for shorter (up to 5-6 mile) tempo's.

  • Hi peeps

How is progress ? I have now started wearing orthotics every day but still feeling them there. I used them for the 400m sprint sessions last week and it wasn't too bad.

  • hi Tony, sorry for the lack of response.  I've not been on here much lately.  Glad your orthotics seem to be working out.  How is the new bike?    Are you back up running to 10 miles?

I have a confession to make - I only realised I should take the insoles out of my trainers when I had my follow up appointment with my pod last week!   image  I still only wear mine for exercise, and I seem to be getting on fine with them.  I don't really notice them any more.  Though, I'll only be able to tell if they've worked once I build up the running again.

    how is the swimming going?

  • image same mistake then. I found it in the instruction which really made me blush. I am back up to 10 miles but still having discomfort. Bike is ok but only used on short sessions due to time and the fact it is way less comfortable than my MTB. I guess I'll have to get used to it though.

Swimming is a no go just now as not a single coach from the Stirling Uni list is available. Bit of a bummer but patience required.

How's your routine going then ? Any races planned ?

Advice from FOOTMAN wanted please!!!  See my thread under health and injury - "feeling confused about my custom made rigid orthotics".

As you can see different professional opinions going on re orthotics.  I am now wondering if my first instinct was correct about having prescribed off the shelf ones!!  I overpronate but to be honest when I have had specialist running shops look at my running gait they always said I was neutral to mild overpronation.  My podiatrist painted a vastly different picture though!  I will  feel dissapointed if I have been  over prescribed and paid for something not needed.  Have had 2 opinions - now awaiting to see a third - expensive!!!

What is your opinion on off the shelf orthotics and also support shoes and motion control shoes - do they do what they say they do on the tin!!!

     Thanks in anticipation!

  • I would go with the pod if I were you image

I did first long (10 mile) run today with my orthotics and for the first time in over 5 yrs felt it in the right areas of my legs. Not exactly walking on air given runnign that is never easy for me but it absolutely feels better than without the orthotics.

Time will tell but I would give the ped ones time, at least 3-6 mths.

  • hiya

thats great news about your 10 miler Tony  image  Shame about the swimming, are you on a waiting list for a coach?

I'm about to start training for the Aviemore half so that'll be a good test for my orthotics. I've not been running that much, just the odd 3 or 4 miler here and there.  We'll see!

Hi Snawpaw - I'd be inclined to go with the pod's opinion too image

Aviemore half sounds good. What's the date ?I am thinking about Glasgow 1/2.
