IW - Mrs Viking took a few pics of you on the run, mail me via here (if it bliddy works I know peeps have had problems recently) and I can get them sent to you.
Ladies, gents... it's been lovely over here but I need to bow out as I'm in danger of becoming the pot calling the kettle black. My forum habit is bad enough already... see you all on the circuit and good luck in all your events... J.
Got back at midnight last night, just found this thread.
Firstly A massive THANK YOU to everyone who supported us on this thread, you guys are amazing, it never ceases to amaze me how much good will comes your way when you race in the black and yellow.
I had an amazing day, it started on the saturday when I was sat on a shuttle bus back from the bike drop off, only about 3 of us at the back of the bus talking to this aussie, and I asked "Are you Macca?" and he laughed and said "Too f*cking right mate!" And then proceeded to offer advice on the best places to stop for a sh*t on the bike. He had a great sense of humour and was just a normal guy. Wish I'd had my camera.......felt sorry he didn't win.
It was quite emotional seeing Viking dip under 15 hours, he was brilliant, and from looking at the photos he did the whole race with a grin on his face - git !
Met Jo in T1 in the morning and then we exchanged words as she motored past me on the run. She was amazing. I also met IW on the run, she was running strong - sorry about the harsh cut off.
Have photos of both of you if you email me.
My race could have been better, loved the swim, swam much better than I anticipated. Got bruised ribs from being kicked ( still sore ) and cuts on my neck from the wettie ( despite bodyglide ).
As someone said What was I doing in T1 ( 11 MINS i THINK ) - Got changed into bib shorts, thoroughly dried feet and went to the loo. I'll improve on that next time.
Within 3 mins of setting off on the bike I discovered three problems:
1. My watch / hrm had stopped in T1 so had to restart it, so for the rest of the race I had no idea of how I was actually doing for time.
2. The bike sensors won't working properly, showed my speed as 7mph for the whole course.
3. Although ridden the day before and it was fine, my derrailuer was faulty and I couldn't change into the big ring, and my chain kept slipping on the cogs.
So given the faults I'm over the moon with my bike split of 6:14, drank loads, it was hot. Heartbreak Hill was amazing. Found the hills tough in the heat.
Got off the bike and felt strong on the first lap of the run but then the heat got me ( someone told me it had reached 31 degs ) and by the second lap I just wanted to curl up in a ball and die. My dad ran across the bridge to shout at me on the far bank of the river and that spurred me on.
On the last lap my dad told me I had 45 mins to run 6km ( sounds a lot but wasn't ) as my watch was way out. I just legged it as I went to get under 13 hours, don't remember much about the finish other than I saw I was going to do it.
Got over the line and felt v wobbly, whisked away for 2 pints of saline on a drip, felt better, came straight out and got my first beer of the year - it tasted brilliant.
indeed he is, LJS and I chatted with him around the finish area, he said it was his own fault he didn't win, for (a) going after the world record and (b) trying to run a 2:35 (!) marathon in that heat. Miscalculation he called it. Said he doesn't like the heat and at 78kg finds it tough in hot weather. I said I thought all Aussies were used to heat, he replied "nah, I hate it".
