FB - that is a brilliant summary of how it feels. IM is normal and not that much to fuss about...
If anyone can do it Mon, you can - I shall be there. Supporting in some capacity. Can't wait to see Daaaaaaaaaaaaaavvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeee's spreadsheet!
Just had a look at the Enduroman website bonkers stuff they mention support crew if you need it I will stick my name down for a weekday and any weekend time you require looks like fun in a twisted way give us a shout when you start your planning
"I could probably put my hand in a pan of boiling oil"
I doubt that very much. Unless it's something you want to train hard for over many years, overriding a number of natural protective instincts. But then I think people would actually be justified in asking "why?"
As you very sensibly say, this is a challenge to be taken seriously and not entered into without a well considered training plan. I was considering the total oil immersion system, but as I'm a newbie to this and can't find the right DVD on Amazon. I'll stick to a hot bath for the moment. Maybe try boiling my head next season.
Waff - It is a fair question which has unfortunately turned into a few smartarse comments. The whole deep fat fryer thing has been covered by Oxy already in much more jovial way.
How many times were you asked in the last 12 months why you wanted to do IMCH? I've lost count and most people could never understand my reasoning when I had found an answer that I was happy with.
the only answer to questions like that is: if you have to ask you wouldn't understand.
I think you're right there. Although I wouldn't want to do a penta I can understand the progression from IM to DIM to something longer. I suppose it's all about finding your limits.

I'm not sure I agree with that. However I think not understanding is a form of self preservation - cos once you understand the nature of the challenge, what's involved and what the personal rewards could be it can get lodged in the back of your mind, just popping up from time to time and asking "what if....?"
It is an interesting question, and I have never got to the bottom of it myself. There'e a lot of small reasons, none of them quite hit it. someof them would be, liking to see what your'e capable of (I get the same buzz in my job up against a deadline or asked to make something tricky). I like to feel my body getting stronger and adapting to extra distance. Triathlon is particularly interesting because of the balance you have to strike when training for three things. I am competetive. I seem to suit longer stuff. I don't like getting out of breath (so 5k's are out). I have a desire to prove myself at sport having not done it in my youth, I love the mental aspect of dealing with your head when it threatens to take you on a negative spiral. I like the idae of training your mind as well as your body. I also have a dad who everytime I do something like this never says well done ('t'would make me cringe anyway, our family aren't like that) but says something like "Aren't you too old to be doing this". I like working things out like nutriton and pace and strategy as well as planning training.
Just so many reasons, and I suppose anyone else could come up with a dozen more.
The Everest answer "because it's there" is an easy way of not having to go into deatil I think.,
Re the boiling your hand in oil I would suggest a combination of sessions of just above hand hot for long periods, with interval sessions of short bouts in extremely hot with a bucket of iced water for the rest interval. Gradually increase the heat on the above hand hot session and increase the time spent in the boiling oil interval one. Along taper before the actual event will mean the skin should heal a fraction and you'll be fresh for the day.

that's just it! when you were just running 10kms (or whatever if was you did) you could understand why people did marathons but not perhaps IM, then you did one IM and a DIM seems understandable. Do two DIM and a load of IM like Monique has can you start to wonder what else there is.
i know i feel completely differently about IM now than I did before my first. at that time I just wanted to finish it; now just doing one seems easy and i want to know how fast i can go. when i'm not getting any faster i'll look for other ways to make it more interesting.

AL - I don't think so although I'll admit I was very tempted. There are other things I want to do next summer (mostly drinking lager in pub gardens).

Gertie - as you well know the forum is an elite clique and newbies can expect to be teased into submission.
Girl!
Have I accidentally joined something?.. where's the bar?
Elite.. nice.
that's avoiding the question.
