Semanya - man or woman?

Before I had even heard of the controversy, I was looking at the Semanya thinking 'omg, she is so a man, surely!!!!" Her body is so masculine but it was more her face which looks exactly like a guys.

It was only after watching her race that I decided to check out online what the controversy was the commentator mentioned thinking it'd be drug related and when I read that it was over her gender, well, I'm not surprised!!!! image

  • I also wonder what the 'complex process of medical examinations' involves!!!image
  • its not always that easy to tell!
  • Erm..... I'm thinking the medical exam is along the lines of  The Crying Game?

I've only seen the headlines on the news, but am curious to hear the rest of the story - poor woman, talk about a kick in the pants.   Possibly a poor choice of phrase, but  can you imagine? image

  • well, that was my excuse when my mum caught me with that ladyboy. she's got over it now luckily but i still have confusing flashbacks
  • I can't help thinking that she looks quite masculine. She has a man's physique so I can understand the testing etc BUT some women do have more testosterone in their body through medical conditions (myself included) at differing levels.... hmmmm let's see what the outcome is.
  • Oxy you never cease to surprise me!
  • lol Oxy!

and true Atich, not nice if she is female but oooh what a scandal if she isn't!!!

IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said the "extremely complex, difficult" test has been started but that the results were not expected for weeks. The verification requires a physical medical evaluation, and includes reports from a gynecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist, an internal medicine specialist and an expert on gender. "So we're talking about reports that are very long, very time consuming," Davies said.

Surely the easiest test would be to see if s/he goes balistic if the toilet seat is left up?

hahaha Gertie, I just woke my kittens up from laughing!!

Shame though for her to go through all those tests if she really is a she. Must be horrible.

Of course she's a woman but she may not fit all the traditional stereotypes of most women.

well clearly that isnt true, if there was no doubt about her being a woman there wouldnt be any need for a test. i dont see what stereotyping has got to do with it!
  • I know you can get ladies who have XY chromosomes.

If you are where does that put you in athletics?? It is whats on the outside that counts?

I think the problem is that this type of thing has happened before.

I think it was Sharon Davies who commented that she thought she had  once walked into the male changing rooms because she could hear some very deep voices.  Turns out to be the East German woman swimmers.

  • Dunno about the chromosomes - but has she got a willy ? That's usually a dead giveaway.
  • But what if she is a XY girl and has no willy!

  • She's not as bulkily built as Mutola who dominated 800m for years and no-one made these comments about her. Then in the 1980s there was Kratochvilova who had a similar build and faced similar accusations, if I recall now she managed to get a medical certificate to prove her gender.

    Surprisingly, it isn't.

Under IOC regulations competitors must compete under their gender at birth and thier appendages don't come into it.

  • Well good on Semanya to go ahead and race as excellently as she did today having already started the 'tests'. Can't have been easy to put that out her mind and stay focused.
  • so is this some kind of genetic thing? apparently tests were requested a couple of weeks ago.  However, as Brendan Foster pointed out, you dont just turn up at Berlin and tell them you fancy running.  You have to go through all the local, regional and national qualifying competitions and runs to be selected to represent your country: in this case as a woman competitor.  It reduces things to a highly embarassing farce that test results are still pending.

  • i think we should just have a look at pics of her family - for all we know they all look like that
it's what we used to do when i was a kids nurse - you would get kids in who you were absolutely sure had some syndrome or other and then granny would walk in and we would all go "ah right"

she does look masculine - but how does she compare with others of her age and race?, africa is a big country - we are used to seeing north african runners and american black runners, but not black south african runners

surely peope are not stupid enough in this day and age to give athletes testosterone - like the old eastern block countries used to

  • Appendages - Love it!image I have had few glasses of wine so that might not be as funny as I think it is.

So it's nothing to do with chromosomes - that shut me up.

She only had her 'breakthrough' a couple of weeks ago and that's when the rumours started. A few more details here.
  • Not really seen a photo of her before, she is lovely looking.

Where do people between genders come in anletics, I mean people born between genders? Because it does happen and they should of thought of it.

  • zanzinger- i'm not too sure of the point you are making, you started out saying that she is obviously a woman!
  • perhaps they could have a hermaphrodite world championships? admittedly the field of competitors would be small but it would be entertaining

thanks for the link Gertie but in some ways it supports Fosters point as in order to make that run at the Juniors, and presumably in order to qualify for the Juniors in the first place, she had at various points along the way have had to have competed as a woman whatever times she was running before then.  Its a total mess.

  • just read that article - i don't think she has much facial hair!!!
when i get my eyebrows threaded there are regularly black women in there getting their chins done, it's hardly unusual

although i think they've tried already tried it with some success at the Wimbledon women's tennis final this year
