Coping with injury blues

  • Hi both

Really sorry to hear things not going well. It really is one step forward and two back sometimes isn't it?

Fingers crossed I'm managing short, gentle runs, followed by stretching and back exercises for about the same length of time! Gawd I know what you mean about driving though. I'm at Hearhrow waiting for hubby to come home. 3 fecking hours on the M25 to do a 60 mile journey - my hamstring was killing me!

It's BB's kitchen in Clubhouse and trust me you won't be intruding

OMG - definitely! (presumambly that would be one running step forward, and two hobbly steps back ?)

I ran 12 minutes on treadmill last night - big mistake - so I spent the evening doing a really great magic trick instead - it involved making a bottle of gin disappear.

Hola Karen - well certainly for me, 'sangria' is all that's required.

  • Hi everyone can I join in for some group sympathy please? So sorry to hear about everyones problems but its comforting to know that I'm in good company.  I've got my arm in plaster after getting knocked off my bike.  I might be in it for 12 weeks!!! So I'm feeling really down.  Its been 3 weeks now and I'm climbing the walls.  Tried a reclining exercise bike at the gym the other day and did some strength work but it was so boring.  They wouldn't let me use the treadmill - not even for some walking at an incline for cardio work.

The worst thing is occupational health have passed me fit to work (I'm a secretary) but with minimal typing and only using one hand! I've tried the last 2 days but its just hopeless - I can't do anything and I have to take 2 busses to get there instead of my usual cycling journey.  I'm getting really depressed now. image image

Bottle of gin sounds like a good idea Amy0 <sends hubby out to buy tonic water and sliced lemon> image

Good luck on a speedy recovery for everyone - I've read back but forgoten a lot of who said what so will have a quick refresher. image

  • Hi Soup Dragon - Sorry to hear about the arm. I do some cycling too, and getting knocked off is always a concern to me. Some motorists are so inconsiderate to cyclists. Is this your writing arm? if so, I bet it takes hours to type your forum posts.

You're always welcome to join the gang here and have a good moan - injuries are such a blow to a runner, and I can guarantee that we all undersatnd your frustration. Is your arm in a plaster cast for the whole 12 weeks? You must be climbing the walls

He he -  sorry about the pun Dragon. Please don't climb any walls with a broken arm. I don't think it's recommended

  • Love it Amy, I thought I'd cornered the market in foot in mouth diseaseimage

Welcome along Soup Dragon, and hope the next 12 weeks pass quickly for you. How on earth are you supposed to type with one hand, for heaven's sake!  I know it's cold comfort, but are you likely to get a decent financial wedge out of this as compensation?

I'm trying really hard to do the exercises that the yummy osteo set me.  Anyone ever tried single leg squats?   I'm supposed to stand on one leg, put the other out in front, then squat down to about 60 degrees.  It was hilarious at first, but suffice to say the joke's wearing a bit thin.  The right leg's not too bad, but I can't even stand on the left one without falling over, let alone squat down to anything like that angle.  Oh, and I'm supposed to make sure my knee goes straight out in front.  Hmmm....    Yummy osteo has a very sadistic streak, methinks!

  • morning all - thanks for the sympathy. wall climbing is off the agenda LOL.image

those squats sound as difficult as my typing hashette - i've given up trying to do cap letters now.  still, its cut down my posting on here which was getting too adictive. image

not much chance of compo for me - the b*****d refused to give his name and the number plate is foreign and the police are being pathetic. image

    *group hug given*

  • Can't beat a good group hugimage

That's so unfair SD.  I had an idea there was some sort of compensation scheme for that sort of situation, hubby reckons the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board?  I'm just off out, but I'll have a google later and ask around at work tomorrow and see if anyone else knows anything about it

Group G&T sounds good for this afternoon.

  • thanks hashette. i may be able to get something from the mib but i need to find a witness and didnt ask anyone at the time so i'm looking for a specific dog walker. image

  •   Feck.  That really is astonishingly unfair.  Time for that group G&T at least

  • I've just hit the sofa after an astonishingly tiring Sunday. I did marshalling at the clumber 10K today - I thought I'd hate being unable to take part, but it was actually great fun. It was also mildly amusing to see other people panting and sweating for a change. I'd no idea how undignified and un-lady-like running was!

I've just poured the largest GnT imaginable - cheers!

  • yeh - G&T image

Watching a race can be good fun can't  it Amy.  I went to do some pirate supporting at a tri last week that  had to pull out of and  really enjoyed it - much better than sitting at home sulking.  Extra points to you for marshalling too.Clumber is really nice - I used to live not too far away from there.

  • Heya everyone, I am another injured runner with the blues. image

Its been a month now since I was told I had an unbalanced hip and couldn’t run until its better, luckily I am allowed to cycle and swim, thank god otherwise I would be pulling my hair out right now!

  • so I spent the evening doing a really great magic trick instead - it involved making a bottle of gin disappear.

  • Cheers Dusty - I aim to please  < pours a large gin and tonic - BTW I'm celebrating tonight folks >

Hiya Katie C - welcome to the forums and to this thread, but really sorry to hear about your hip trouble. Just try to enjoy the swimming and cycling for now - it's better than nothing I guess. Are you having chiropractic / osteopath etc? Have they given you any idea what caused it and/or what you can do to prevent it from happening again?

My left hip/groin trouble was all caused by mis-alignments in my spine and pelvis - which were the result of over-pronation in my left foot. The chiropractic has sorted out all the mis-alignments, and my custom orthotics should prevent it from all happening again. Well, that's the theory anyway.

I did 2km tonight on the treadmill.........pain free image  I think I see light at the end of the tunnel

  • great news amy - although I'd be inclined to say its the gin that has been the cure. image image

Welcome Katie - sorry you are having to join us.  Pulling hair out is a much a better analogy than climbing walls.  Heres wishing you a speedy recovery - I'm so envious of you swimming and cycling  <sighs - pour another gin someone please>

  • *pours belated G&T for SD*

Sorry the service is a bit slow here tonight!

    Welcome Katie

    Amyimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

  • OMG - Woke up pain free this morning after my 2k run last night. image QUESTION: is 7.54am too early for a celebratory GnT?

Karens H and J - not heard how you girls are getting on for a while. Hope all is well

  • Another runner hits A&E!  Ran the Swansea 10K on Sunday and at 5K felt the most god awful pain in my (L) foot.  However, bravely (or dimly!) kept going - achieved a new PB - but have now found out that I have a stress fracture of my 3rd metatarsal.  Sat at home in plaster to the knee!  Looks like the Cardiff half marathon will have to wait another year image

    Better open another bottle

  • amy0 - its never too early for gin. image

hi stumbling - congrats on your pb but boo to your fracture.  how long are you going to be in plaster for.

i'm just back from the fracture clinic - good news is its healing and may be out of plaster in 3 weeks. image  bad news is new cast leaves me even more restricted - can't even reach the shift key. image  better news is i've got a sick note for 3 weeks so my boss and occupational health can take a running jump.

    take care all.

  • Afternoon all,  I have finally taken the time to read the whole thread - always my trouble rushing in.  My injury was only Sunday and already I hate the fact I won't be able to run for 6+ weeks, and then only light work (assuming all goes well) as that is how long I think I will have to have the cast on for.  Though see the specialist on Thursday so should no more then.

Well glad to hear you have now been signed off Soup Dragon, so one more thing off your mind and no stress about travelling back and forth to work.....  How I love public transport (why does the "eccentric" person always sit next to me?)

I am trying to think of a cunning way not to put the two stone back on that I have lost since starting running in Feb (yes a late starter to the game), apart from having my jaw wired as suggested by some of my kind work colleagues (not sure if that is about the weight loss or just the fact I talk too much image

Well good luck all on that rocky road to recovery, which is always a little harder to traverse after a couple of gins!

  • Funny I was just thinking today of seeing if there was an injured and totally depressed thread - and here it is.

My story - had a storming 2008, pb-ing in half marathon, 10K and 10 miles.  Thought 2009 would be even better!  However, I stubbed my R 4th toe really badly in February (not running related) and had 3 months off.  Came back in June and have been building up really slowly since.  However, I upped the work rate (but not dramatically) a few weeks ago and since then have been having L ankle problems.  My head's been in the sand a little, but finally booked to see the fizz on Thursday and decided not to run again until then.  Really hoping I can do the Cabbage Patch 10 in October, but now wondering if I will make it.  Even if I do, I reckon it will be a 'get round' only.

     I'm feeling pretty blue image

  • Hi Tams - fingers crossed for good news from the fizz.  sounds like a good idea to wait for that.  Cabbage patch is one of my fav races - hope you get chance to do it.

Stumbling -  6 weeks+ image  I'd better get some more tonics in.

  • Yeah I love the Cabbage Patch - it's where I pb'd last year, and the start is very close to home.  Definitely a  a fav of mine (as are the G&T's!)
  • Hello Tams and SU - I can't help but notice that the GnT is rapidly becomming the drink of choice on the injured runners forum, so please have this one on me. I think it's even bigger than than the previous one Hash!

Sorry to hear of all the injury woes folks - you can guarantee a good drink and a shoulder to cry on here.

  • HELLOOOOO FOOOLLLKS!  So sorry I have been away - on a pivate island!image Well only one night on a small island in Cornwall - very nice though. Watched gig rowing champoinships and saw how fit they all were. Very stressful as I have now done no exercisimagee in 7 weeks.  I am still on the waiting list for phsio with the NHS after refusing to pay anymore for Osteo but hey ho - these lists are long........back seems to be getting better but groin still giving me jip - yes the car journet clutch pedal thing each day.

So sorry to hear about all of you newbies to the sight. Welcome! So many of us are injured.

Underwriter - my hubby has lost almost 1.5 st this year so I can really understand how frustrated you must be feeling. it takes so much commitment to do it - well done and don't get too down about it.

AmyO - seems like you may be on the road to recovery - fingers crossed for you. image

hi hashette - hope all is well........sounds like you are all drinking far too much on this site - I thought I was the only one who drank lots - what have we all become???image ha ha. I am on lemsip at the mo - no wine for me tonight.

  • And I have looked at your exercises Hashette but have not done them yet = I think I am losing the will to bother ! I do know though that I will come back fitter and stronger - honestly!!!image
  • Afternoon folks,

Is it me? or is it now I am wandering about like Robocop with my ever so fashionable aircast boot on that I can't go out without seeing people running everywhere?  Not that I am bitter image  Well to top off the week I received my "unlucky" brochure for London - may be for the best all things considered.

Well it looks like some people are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel good luck AmyO and thanks for the support Karen J7 - I am already driving the wife mad now I can't run, she seems to think her being 8 months pregnant should be higher on my priorities image

Well it is Friday and definitely will have a few snifters tonight, so good luck all and Karen don't lose hard, just think how smug you feel when you are back in tip top conditionimage

     PS Bombay Sapphire tonight yippee!

  • ha ha - I am just reading how your wife's condition should take priority to your running Stumbling Underwriter! I remember my huby yawning - yes yawning whilst I was in labour!!! It did NOT go down well. but 10 years on, he has been the one who has got up the most  in the night as I seemed to turn into a monster when it got dark. exciting time for you though!! Is this your first?

Hey - my groin only twinged twice today - yipeeimage I am tempted to do the treadmill but NO!!!! I WILL NOT! I WILL SAVE MYSELF FOR FULL FITNESS. I WILL RESIST.........and drink wine all night instead - well it is Friday. however another party tomorrow night and as Cheryl Cole models herself on me and steals all my dance moves(yes - this is true), I am really going to have to try hard to stay still tomorrow night and not injure this groin even moreimage I did take the dog on the beach earlier and I can now bend down to pick up sticks - and poo!

How has everyone elses day been? Is anyone else on the wine tonight?

  • Actually - hubby has just walked in with Gin - I will join you all. CHEERSimage
