I've been into running on and off since school (i'm 33 now) and i've always wanted to do the London marathon!! I'm getting back into running and I reckon this race will be a good building block. I'm gonna enter as many halves as I can in 2010 and then hopefully do the big one in 2011!!
I've got my training plan ready to go as of tommorrow, so wish me luck!!

Could be a good way to shift the Xmas indulgences and also something to focus the winter training on.
15 weeks today so almost perfect for a training plan.
Anyone know the course profile, I am assuming its reasonably flat unless it heads off towards the M6 by the Tickled Trout.
Could be a good way to achieve first of 2010's targets of 1:30 half
I'm in the same boat Natalie, I needed a goal to aim for and this is it!!
Not really going for time, more completion of the race. Loving the challenge though!!
hey thanx paul i think i will start the training plan, how you doing your training?
Just the thought of being able to complete the race is amazing so i think i will go for it , do you think that 15 weeks is enough time though?
Yes Natalie, 15 weeks should be LOADS of time!!
I'm using the Smartcoach on this site, just type in a time for a 5K run and it'll sort you out, refine it for 14 weeks and the plan finishes bang on the 3rd January!!
I started mine today (a 'rest') day but i'm up early to do a 2 mile, slow pace jog before work!!
Which bit Natalie?
Using Smartcoach?
Ah. No I won't you've not got email set up on here
Ok...first step...open up the Quick Links menu on the left and about a third up from the bottom is Smartcoach...click on that.
Fill in the time of a recent race...or for now you could do a timed training run for a set distance if you've no races to fill in.
Fill in the distance of the race.
Select half marathon for the distance you're aiming for.
Fill in your current typical mileage. If you're lower than the ones there just select the lowest band.
Then, for now, just leave the bottom 4 sections as they are. You can always adjust it later.
Click on 'Go' at the bottom right and it'lll give you a schedule.
Its probably got 3 runs a week listed (tempo/speedwork, LSR & easy) with rest/XT for the other days.
Rest/XT means a non running day. You can do nothing or you could cross train - cycling, swimming etc
Easy run and long run are straightforward. They just tell you the distance to run and the pace (how many minutes per mile) you should run them at.
Tempo is similar.
If it says something like:
Dist: 5mi, inc
Warm; 3mi@8:36; Cool
It means run 5 miles in total with the middle 3 miles at 8 minutes 36 seconds a mile pace. The mile either side of that are just to warm up or cool down - just jog them.
If it says something like:
Dist: 7mi, inc
Warm; 3x1600@8:02
w/800 jogs; Cool
Its a similar principal - just that you'll be doing intervals. In that example you'd do 7 miles total. In the middle of this you'd do 3 lots of 1 mile (1600m) at 8:02 with 800m jogs in between. i.e. 1.5 miles warm up jog, 1 mile at 8:02, 800m jog, 1 mile at 8:02, 800m jog, 1 mile at 8:02, 1.5 miles jog to cool down.
The idea of the 3 runs is:
The long run is designed to build your stamina and you run it slowly.
The easy run is just to help with recovery and add in a few extra miles.
Ther tempo/speedwork runs are designed to make you faster by doing shortish sections at a faster pace.
Every 4th week there's no long run or speed session - just 3 easy runs - this will help your body recover and consolidate your improvements.
Hope you sorted it out Natalie!!
Did my 3rd training run today and did 6.29 miles (JUST over 10K) in 56 mins. Felt really good all the way round and included a gel 3 miles in. The pace seems a little slow (following my Smartcoach plan) but I wanted to stick to it. Looking forward to another long run next Sunday.
Hope to see a few of you at the run in January.
Yeh feel really good actually, longest run i've ever done and only the 4th run in about 4-5 months!!
I personnaly feel the planner is working for me very well, i'm motivated and looking forward to my runs. The Garmin Forerunner 50 I got hold is a VERY good bit of kit for what I need it for (pace/distance mainly). If your looking into getting a running aid google it Natalie, they're ace!!
Did you sort your planner out BTW?? How you getting on??
I think i will do this one good set up 4 the year plan on doing about 20 run the best year since 1993
Well i am signed up for this and looking forward to it.
Dawn...you wont come last with that time. it will be somebody who has decided to become fit in their new year resolution list and everything has gone tits up by the 5th, you know the sort.
WOOHOO got my number through the post today!! My 1st half, suddenly a bit more real!!
Number 12 so I dont know if I was one of the 1st to register or just lucky to get a low number!!
Me too. Looking forward to an early challenge in 2010. Hope your training's going well Paul.
I'm intending to do this one
managed to scrape juuust under 2 hours a while back in my last HalfMara and hoping to go sub-1:50 in this one...
(there, I've said it! )
Oh yummy
i do like the idea of this race
and i see it's easy to get to
junc 1 of M55 and then down a road to the village - drive up early, run a good HM sub 2 hours or maybe sub 1:50 even, change and luch and back home doownM6 and M40
Does this mean we will see you both there then Mick.
Ive just got my number and the day after received a different number, does anybody have any details for the organiser so i could clear this matter up.
Hello Gold Pig
hopefuly
i'm just scannit all january events onto my favourites, then i'll consider all the logistics of it all
in other words what's else is on the same day closer to home, but i won't target any short stuff
i'd rather drive 2 hours or so for a 10, 13, or 15 miler then do a 10k or 12k near home - that would piss me off
