  • Good idea SZ - I'll get on to it, it'll be a bit of rush now though! Which reminds me, did the guy run it barefoot again who was there in 08? I see RGR is offering to run it naked, which includes bare feet I'm guessing ...or socks and sandals (oh dear).

  • Fabberific, thank you Gary, I feel a little shopping trip into town pending....

FF - can you keep me??? Ha ha ha, you'll be trying to get rid soon enough.

  • I didnt see the barefoot guy LM but I did see a man maybe the same one running in what looked like socks with toes in! Unless I was hallucinating at that point .

What is wrong with this look??

  • UM - the shop opposite is called LAB Sport.  apparently this is another specialist sports shop what sells affleet stuff.

(Unfortunately however, they aren't special enough to sell my new sock n' sandal look)

    um - warmest of welcomes.

    rgr - i'm a 9.5 size please!

brer - hope to say hello at clowne

sz - please have a lardy phase..i've been doing it for the past 12months..its great..trust me..just makes your efforts sooooo much harder!

nice hols sp? any spanish ultras done while you were there? image

  • Mr Rex (cont fron 2009) - The gun time's the gun time fair enough. My plan this year is to add a little 'chicken wing' shuffling and 'barging' training prior to getting into my training stride. (I hope you're taking note LM!) Seriously, until I'm trying to break 3hrs I'll not worry about gun times - and if ever I was at that level - I'd no doubt be at the front at the start anyway. This year I got 8hrs 20 something seconds at the HP40 - I couldn't care less about not getting a sub 8. And at my level going sub whatever will more likely be by minutes rather than seconds - or not at all because I'm running by feel rather than the watch.

    Anyway how was your trip?

  • RGR - You know not what you do!
  • Great hol thanks. Really good. Some nice runs too. No Ultras and annoyingly missed Palma Marathon by 2 days.

Well done to all who did SNOD 09. Looking forward to watching the highlights soon. Great time SZ, all that training paid off.

  • What you need SZ is my socNsandal (patent pending!) look, no one will stand within 10 feet of you!
  • NG - I saw the guy in the socks with toes in. I'd never seen them before but believe they are vibram five fingers.  If I had a perfect gait and no overpronation issues I may use something like that for a short run, but a hilly marathon.... stress fracture.... nutta image
  • Mousicles, I see the money you've saved today is burning a hole in your pocket already image
  • How  weird are those DE ? Wouldnt fancy 26 miles in them although would be better than barefoot .
  • Changing the subject for a second, can anyone tell me what the 2006 official SNOD T shirt colour was? (can't find it at the mo, looking for a colour helps)  Thank you so much.

2005 was black.  2007 was green.

  • Have you checked you're not wearing it RGR with those pink tights?
  • Are there definitely T shirts?  I'm not doing this if there isn't a T shirt.  image

Well, I've moved over here from 2009 thread and haven't posted a report yet, so you guys will have to suffer it.  I'll make it brief.  It does seem that I recognise a good number of the names on here ...

    SNOD 09

In my tent half way up a mountain I was aware of heavy rain starting and a wind blowing up about 0400.  Emerged race ready about 0915 and set off on a more conventional route to the start than I had recced the night before (see 2009 thread), ie the road.  Even decided to catch the bus after a miserable 30-minute wait or so.

As some folks know I was attemting to lead a group round for sub-4:00 and met three of them at the start, BritNick, TomS and one other.  Tried to identify others of my groupies but numbers covered up by black bags, coats, etc.  Met my brother who arrived in his vest and shades as usual.  Ever the optimist.

Terrible delays at the start but at 1050 we set off.

After three years of trying to run the same schedule it looks like I really ought to revise it.  A blustery first 4 miles and then strong headwind for next 8 (again!) meant that I progressively fell behind.  Going to have to factor this wind one.

Nonetheless dropped one groupie quite early on, and TomS who was running strongly and relaxed also dropped back about mile 7.  BritNick who had gone ahead I caught up about mile 8 or 9, and upon hearing that we were a minute behind schedule at that point, his morale crumbled.

Ran the rest of the race more or less on my own but hoped I was some sort of visible presence for people.  Hill at miles 13-14 tougher than I remember and by the end of it I was 5 1/2 minutes behind schedule.

However miles 15-21 seemed easier than I remember and wind assisted a lot of the time.  Was racing my brother along that stretch and sharing the "lead".  But I broke him and continued to overtake runners.  Caught up 4 minutes of my deficit by Waunfawr and set off up the hill.  Ran it all last year but this had to do 4 short stretches of walking.  By the top I was about a minute ahead and knew sub-4 was in the bag and was able to ease off a bit.

Nearly eased off too much - finish time was 3:59:20! In the finish funnel met 3 other of my groupies who had all achieved sub-4 quite independent of me, two including Drunken Euphoria very close to my time, and steve-z who had stormed round.

After that it was camaraderie all round with various of us meeting up at Pete's Eats (1600), Padarn Lake Hotel (1900) and then another pub opposite, where steve-z was staying, and just with a blackboard saying "Bar Open" leading you up a ramp (2100).

Mysteriously it soon got to 0045, the bar showed no sign of closing and only steve and I were left. I was left with the option of trudging uphill a mile to my wet tent or go upstairs and take the spare bed in his twin room which he kindly offered.  No brainer.  Thanks, steve.

Just to let people know my tent was still there about 1000 next morning when I got to it.

  • T RexT Rex ✭✭✭

After that it was lunch and drinks at the PenY Gwyrd hotel with my brother.  I do like the cauldron of mulled wine they always have on the go right there on the counter.

People who know my brother will be pleased to hear that he had had a hearty cooked breakfast where he was staying, followed by a sizable roast beef dinner here.  It seems some of you were alarmed at the amount on his plate at Pete's Eats the night before.  A picture of it might even appear on BritNick's blog!!

But I have known this chap for all of his 45 years and his eating abilities are legendary.  I remember taking him to a church Christmas event one year with refreshments afterwards.  Big mistake.  He got through 24 mince pies and 3 bottles of Schloer (?sp).

One of his greatest exploits must have been at our grandmother's funeral.  A large spread had been put on. Noting that not many people seemed to be eating much, he took up a position by the side of the table and over the course of the next hour or so got through the lot.  Every single plate had been emptied.  It defied belief.

  • What you need SZ is my socNsandal (patent pending!) look, no one will stand within 10 feet of you!
  • Sorry TRex, god knows how that post above crept in??

    Great race report.

Welcome aboard, Plodding Hippo (about time you changed that name by the way!)  With your prolific posting, not to say gin consumption, we will easily surpass the 2009 thread PB ...

btw I am NOT starting a list for at least 10 months.

Hi, Fellrunner!  What do you have to report, if anything?

  • T RexT Rex ✭✭✭
Yes, RGR, I notice the sandal theme continues.

  • I think I am going to have to revisit this next year.

btw, anyone know what the energy bars they used this year were. I really liked them.
  • Can't remember getting a tshirt in 2006, they were selling grey ones I think.
  • T-Rex,  fab race report. Feel a little bit wiser to what I'm letting myself in for!  Well done image
  • Yes 2006 t shirt was definitely grey, just been up to my wardrobe to check ! What colour shirt was 2009 btw ?

Great report as usual T Rex. Glad your tent was still there this year.
