  • Well done chocmonster its thaqt kind of determination that spurs us all on. Some running guru's say that if you smile when you are running it makes the experience easier. I have tried this but the smile slips quickly into a contorted image better suited to a hammer horror film.

You were all quicker than me at getting into a specialist running shop I was absolutely terrified they would laugh me out of the shop. I have now been measured up and I proudly wear a comfy pair of running shoes with go faster stripes.

  • Julie,I have just one thing to say to you, YOU CAN DO THIS.I started over 4st heavier than I am now and although I struggled with injury,I did it.I would just take it at your own pace and build gradually but believe me,there is no such word as cant. You will soon be sayin,WOW I did it. I also got out of many a pe lesson, usually with talc to look pale.lol

Chocmonster,MAHOOSIVE well done to you,7 miler here you come. I did run before the Christening as it was at 12. I managed a 4 miler with some gruelling hills but have managed to run without a walk break so am chuffed.Im just concentrating on my shorter runs for a little while.I was well chuffed though as avoided all the norty foods today and went for the wholemeal sarnies with lots of salad.I did have a smalle piece of cake but had no booze. I need to wait till payday till I can sign up for anything,I really need one to focus on though.

Hi Ian,good on you for getting proper shoos too,I made that mistake when I first started and wished I had done it sooner.Oh yeh,and I get very competitive with myself, didnt used to be but am getting worse as I improve.

  • woohoo, another 3 miler with no walk breaks, so Friday wasn't a fluke image

I arrived back home at 2.9 miles so ran past my house and back to make it up to 3.0 miles, and then decided to go for a 5k, so ran up the other way and back again - must've looked odd, but I ran 5k non stop, so I don't care how silly I might have looked image
  • Kwala,I have just one thing to say to you,YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE,WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY. Seriuosly well done Mrs,your determination is amazing.Funny,I never care about looking silly anymore,I cant help but look daft, red faced, sweaty and unable to breath in tights and visi jacket.lol

Well,no running for me so far this week, got a sick child so was grounded.I am hoping to get out tomorrow when he back at School.

  • Yey,son is back at School so managed to venture out today.Freeeeeeeezing out there, bit slippy in places but lovely and sunny.Managed 40 mins with 3 huge hills.Felt pretty comfy though, didnt push it too much. I have decided to concentrate on smaller runs for a little while and then build back up again so that I dont get back into the walking habit.I worked so hard to get out of it.

  • Hi, ive bene viewing this forum for a while now since i started running in september this year when i realised after a year working in an office and gaining almost 2 stone to an already overweight figure. i tryed cycling and loved it and cycled many miles during the summer but did not really change my diet so the weight loss was not significant. In september i was 14 stone 10 and decided to join the gym for the winter. i have been going every night and started off trying to run for 20 mins none stop i could do 10 then needed a few mins before continuing. after a few weeks i was able to run for 5k and my fastest time has been 28 mins. i was really pleasesd when i reached this i have now been doing 5k every night since the beginning of october aswell as gradually introducing light weights. i have been very determined to do over 5k and last night i achieved this by running for a full 10k (although not as fast) i ran it in 1 hr and 05 minuets i was so proud of myself having thought i was going to give up half way though. i was suprised i could do it. i have also recently started MMA (mixed martial arts)as to add a bit more variety to my excersie and i currently weigh 13 stone 5 this is the lightest i have been since i was around 13 yrs old. my diet has changed and ive been living off porrage for breakfast, beans, jacket spuds and soups for lunch. i usually take the weekends off and eat how i like. took me a while to post this i have been rather nervous. is my training ok ? and diet, i try and eat as much white meat as i can and have replaced milk with soy milk. should i be pushing more kilometres in the gym as i have been doing 5k regualrly im just a bit worried incase i am used to it and it will slow down my fat loss.
    thank you
  • Hey Ecky, glad to hear your son is feeling better. Well done on the run, sounds like a good plan.

welcome to the forum budda blue. You don't need to be nervous about posting in here, we're a friendly, if slightly mad, bunch!!Well done on the weight loss and the running. 28 mins for a 5k and 1:05 for a 10k is really good in my book image
I can't really advise on diet or exercise, as i am crap at both!! But I do believe the basic formula of calories eaten is less than calories burned then you will lose weight holds true. But I do think it is good to mix up the running with other exercise, just to keep you interested and also to give the running muscles a rest, and it wouldn't hurt to have a rest from all exercise at least once a week, to give your body a chance to recover and repair itself.

I managed another 3.2 miles tonight, no walking, bit quicker than last time too. Very pleased but also very aware that I have to do just over 4x that in March image
  • Hi Budda Blue.  Wow, how far you've come in only two months, that sounds like a really massive achievement.

As a complete newcomer, I couldn't really give you advice on if your training/diet is okay but it certainly sounds like its working.  It sounds like you're ready to move up to a longer distance, but maybe you could alternate this with days when you run faster for a short period of time, or even interval training (either on speed or incline - I can definitely tell you that running up a slope is a lot harder than running on the flat, havng tried it on Monday...)?  Having variety in your exercise will definitely be good as your body can get used to something and not see it as challenging - the harder it has to work, the more energy it will consume.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks Kwala, yeh,I still remember past injury and am always wary of pushing too much.I will stick to runs of  between 40mins and 1h for now, till I have another half coming up.Well done, you really are getting back into it now.You will easy be ready for the halfimage.

Hi Bhudda Blue, you are doing really well. You are doing good times for your 5 and 10k's. I agree with the variety thing too,I do boxing and I also mix my runs up with hill's and a little fartlek (prob dont do it properly but I do a version to build stamina). There is lots of advice about building up longer distances.I would always build gradually so as not to risk injury but there is no reason why 10k cant turn into a half marathon.I think by just being sensible with diet and still having the odd treat, you will be fine.I do slimming world to lose the weight but there is always lots of advice in running mags and here on the forums.I think the golden rule is as long as you burn more calories than you consume, weight will drop off.Oh and dont be nervous,we are really nice on hereimage.

Well got my copy of womens running with my little piece in,blink and you miss it.lol but I got pressies for putting it in so Im happy.Been snowing too so was bit reluctant to go out ,glad I did though cos roads were pretty clear.Managed 45 mins, still solid,4 killer hills,I really wished I lived somewhere flatter.lol.I do feel like I am back into the swing of it now,may do a cross country next week, just gutted my bestest running buddy is out of action.

  • "were singing a song as we go along, running in a winter wonderland"!!!!

image   ok so i was outa tune!

hi all who's attempted running in their wellies then or is that a step too far?  I'm in a pickle, tis my 7m run 2moz but i don't fancy my chances on the pavements, Ive never ran in the snow but still daft enough to attempt it! so its on the roads which ain't ideal or ouch my treadmill which has been collecting cobwebs in my garage for over a year.  I'm not against it but 7m looking at shelves full of 1/2 empty paint tins just ain't that appealing.  Sod it i think ill go sledging!

Eckty i bought your mag today to read tonight (alas not with maltesers I'm  t-total now!)  only problem is i left it in my friends car (gutted) I'm off to the newsagents tute sweet 2moz for another copy, really nice to hear your back out enjoying it.

Welcome budda blue post what you like when you like & if anyone else is out there feeling a bit unsure don't be nervous pop in & say hello

  • I thought that was nice Chocmonster, very tunefulimage. I must admit,Im not so dedicated that I will risk inury slipping around.I know we nly had a tiny covering yesterday and most of it had gone. I did enjoy being out in it though so it may be worth a shot. WOW no Maltesers, thats dedication for you,you would only have managed 2 by the time yuo read my bit.lol.it is very tiiiiiny.

I didnt mention the other day,I got my 4st award at SW and also I won my group Miss Slinky  award.lol.I got a nice shiny pen, cert and shiny sticker. I cant believe at 37,I am still getting so exited about these things.lol. I can nearly do my wedding dress up again,nt been able to do that for nearly 10 years.I can say,Im properly chuffed.

  • Somebody tell me I'm not being a wimp for deciding not to go running in the snow?  It's about 8 inches deep here and I'm having enough trouble walking on it in my hiking boots.  My brain says I'm being sensible but there's a little voice in there telling me I'm using it as an excuse!
  • I must admit Julie,I wouldnt run in deep snow, anything that will risk injury is really not worth it.I think you are being sensible too.We only had a really light dusting. It was just patchy when I went out.
  • How's everyone doing? All coping with the snow and ice? Must admit it's stopping me going out - and I'm struggling with the treadie, really really not enjoying it. Barely managed to push myself to a single mile tonight - need to get outside and soon!!!
  • Hi Kwala,Im grounded too and sold my treddieimage. Its driving me mad but cant risk it.Some paths are so icy you can hardly walk. I may have to resort to my Davina dvd.Im gutted though.Maybe the rest will do me good.
  • Confined to quarters here too and I am going stir crazy. I have been on the dreadmill twice at the gym but it is so so boring and I get so hot using it even when I just saunter along. Going to have my gym programme updated tonight so that will keep me busy for awhile, but I need to get back on the hiways and byways as I have my first 10km race in Telford on Sunday 19th December.
  • I think the problem with treadie is the speed is set, you don't make all the adjustments you would when you're outside so it becomes a chore, plus no change of scenery doesn't help. I'm meeting up with couple of people from the Fetch Everyone forum for a lunchtime plod tomo - no snow or ice in Central London!
  • Did you manage to get out for a run Kwala?. I have been grounded for 2 weeks now and am desperate to get out there.Thankfully, most of the snow has gone so Im running tomorrow.I just cant wait, just hoping all the walking has paid off this week.I did slip in the snow yesterday though and the back of my leg is a bit sore, will see how I get on,prob take it easy.

  • No Ecky - work got in the way as usual. going to try again for next week. Ice seems to be retreating, so might manage to get outside at the weekend. Hope your leg is ok, go easy on it tomorrow image
  • Thats a shame Kwala. I will take it easy,I was in a bit of pain when I slipped as I was desperate not to fall on my bum so I tensed the muscle.
  • Hi all hope your all out taking advantage of the tropical temp before the big chill on thurs!!  it was a balmy -15 up here one night last week but its a heatwave right now infront of the fire!  alas i see most of us are in the treadmill club at the mo its tragic aint it.  Treadies have there benefits but nothing beats getting out when you feel like a caged animal.  I managed a respectable 8m on Fri but had to run against traffic on part of my route due to ice still lingering here & there, twas abit hairy at times but big ups for the considerate drivers that did pull over & didnt try & kill me throw anything at me or shout abuse! Does anyone have any advice on trail shoes? im wondering if there ok in snow?  if its back on thurs i might invest in a pair ta ta 4 now back to my idle day before a mad shopping day 2moz

  • I know a couple of (very serious) trail runners and they all seem to have microspikes or yaktrax things to go out in this weather, rather than using their regular trail shoes.  I think if you know you're just on snow, trail shoes would be good (I love my hiking boots but I can't run in them image !) but the spikes give you grip on anything slippy.

     Have fun image

  • Hi All,hope everyone is OK. Im so pleased all that snow went, managed a couple of really good runs this week.I seem to be getting faster too which is good.Weight is still coming off (well untill next week) I went under 11st for the first time in 9 years. Im just hoping that the snow stays away although we sposed to have it again this week.
  • thanks julie2010 ill give the trail shoes ago was soo in the spirit of buying for others thought id treat ickle old me to an early gift from Santa coz ive been such a good lass this year!  bit scared of trying spikes hard to imagine how id manage it but id probably rip my inner calves to shreds!  hope your prepared for round 2 of the snow ps wheres everyone at nowadays?
  • Hi Chocmonster.I been sticking to 60-70 min runs.I am back to solid which is good but seem to be going much further in that time.Like the idea of a pre Christmas gift, trail shoos sound like s good idea.I just dont want any more snow, need to be able to run off all the crimbo food.I have a race on the 27th dec too.Its a 5k and Im hoping it will keep me focused.
  • Well helloooo Eckytump how the devil r u?   Nice to hear your out & about feeling the benefits & well impressed your racing over chrimbo put me to shame you do !!!  My pre chrimbo prez came today & they felt the biz digging my car outa the snow! gutted im off to work tonight & tomorrow so i cant do them justice & attempt my long run but ill give them a wee 3m breather & try to keep off my bum!  Surprised they got here atall alas more snow on the way for me fingers crossed you get your wish & dont get any Eckytump.
  • Im afraid we got tonnes of it Chocmonster, sooooo not impressed. I usually love the snow but not when it stops me running.I need to be able to burn off my booze calories.lol.Bummer you have to work the weekend. Glad you got ur delivery though,I was worried as we ordered one of ours a JLS hoody and I didnt think she would get it for Christmas, very impressed it came today.
  • Yep Im well impressed with the posties bless their cotton socks out & about in this awful weather. So you didn't escape it huh I guess we'll just have to embrace the seasons festivities & the tonnage that goes with it & worry about it in January does that mean I can have chocolate now I swear I haven't had any since octoberish!!!! Ps trail shoes were a success 2night so maybe I don't have an excuse afterall!!!!!
  • I think you are right Chocmonster, time to relax and enjoy all the chocs, pringles and booze, yum yum.I will be  back to it in Jan.If the snow stays the run on the 27th will be cancelled anyway.Glad the trail shoos are good,I really must invest in some. I agree with the postie thing, some of the paths have been dreadfull here, dont know how they do it.
  • hi folks - remember me!!  Thought I would check in before Xmas, work has been manic, so I haven't posted for a while.  Where I am the snow has been horrific, and continues to be even today.  I had a quick glance at the posts above and see that everyone is deflated with the treadmill. However as a extreme novice I never had time to adjust well to the outdoor running before the snow came, and surprisingly I am started to enjoy the sweat that the treadmill gives me. I've only now managed to achieve 30 mins without stopping, but considering I was only about 8 mins when I started a few weeks ago.  And - 6 pounds lighterimage

well done to everyone persisting with the snow/treadmill, I still can't imagine reaching the feats of the 8 mile runs / killer hills that I'm reading about here................you are an inspiration.

Have a great Xmas and New year xxxx
