  • if you go on the train make sure you take the wetsuit and goggles off, you could some some weird looks on the underground!!

Bit cold at the mo though surely!!

  • In a fit of enthusiasm I entered the Chiltern 100 Sportive yesterday and put myself down for the 107 miles.  Thought it would be a good opportunity to go over 100 miles with lots of company!

But now I've had time to think about it I'm wondering vwhether I've been a bit ambitious considering i've got Bala the next weekend?  Trouble is this kind of distance is unknown territory for me and I dont want to totally destroy myself before an event I'm really looking forward to - help!!  Do you think I'd be better off with the middle distance at Chiltern- I think about 70 odd miles?

    Any thoughts anyone

  • Slim

By the time you get near Bala you should be able to rattle off the sportive as a long training ride use the week as a very easy taper then be fighting fit for Bala but if in doubt take the 70 miler.  Sportives are agreat way of getting long rides in far better than soloing although I am always concious to keep too IM training pace and keep out of the drafting so its more erlevant to IM training. I am doing the North Cornwall Tor 100 a month before Bala its a very tough sportive so if you are after a challenge but not so near to Bala this one is a goody

  • Thanks for the advice RBMax

I've had a look at the Cornwall 100 and would love to do it but it is just logistically impossible at that time.

I think I'll stay registered on the 107 miler and as you say hopefully be able to rattle it off and then taper for Bala.   The thought of doing 100 milers on my own is pretty daunting!

  • Its just a number, its all psychological once you have done a 100 miler you will wonder what all the fuss was about thats why its always nice to get a least one under your belt before your first IM you then realise its not such a big deal and it will set you up mentally for the IM, also when you get to Bala you can tell yourself "its ONLY 54 miles"image
  • After a little "blip" managed to get back into it with a good swim session last night and a wonderful frosty hours run this morning, 5am, pitch black, clear skys i had to stop for 5 minutes and look at the stars it was breathtaking we are so fortunate to be able to do thisimage Mojo firmly switched back on, even going for a mile in the pool  after workimage
  • Hi all. I too got my IMUK place. I'm a newbie and was thinking I must Been mad having not done a triathlon before and I can only swim breaststroke image, but i've taken comfort from a lot of threads on here. I just want the challenge.

I've been reading with interest the huge differences in current distance and training regimes for what would be a base period. There does however seem to be a common factor throughout them all.......Structure.....  so I'm trying to gather my training into some kind of order and wind it back a bit as it seems to be all or nothing (probably not the best way to do it image). Doing about 12 hrs a week over 5/6 days at the mo which includes a 15ish mile run and a 70ish bike. can only F/crawl 50 metres before i'm out of breath and need to rest though, so i'm taking lessons and i'll be swimming in the morning at 7. Its Great image

  • Welcome Colbol......you have come to the right place!  A mixture of newbies ( like me) and some experienced guys who have given heaps of useful advice.

The best advice for me was to get Don Fink's book and use his schedules as they are easy to follow - although I do have a couple of other books which make interesting reading as well.  I've read Fink's book from cover to cover and have really taken heed of his advice to train within the correct heart rate zone.  So this is what I am really aiming to do and I feel fine so far.

I like seeing what other people are doing but I don't really feel the need to compete with others (yet!).  Cos of work committments I have to be a bit creative with the schedule sometimes ( like this week image) but on the whole I am trying to stick to a structure of sorts.  I am also doing VLM in April so I have incorporated a build up of LSR's into the schedule as well. Enjoy and keep posting!

Today I managed to get out early for a 6.2 mile run before work -----not as early as R'max  but still nice and refreshing.  Cycled to and from work and then did an hour on gym bike Zone 2. Was going to do a transition to treadmill but the occupants of the treamills did not realise how crucial this was to my schedule..and didn't budge image. So came home and now going to fry some steak and eat manly food as I'm starving .

8iron--LOL. Wouldn't it be good to do that for a dare!!image. And just sit there reading the paper in nonchalant manner......

  • Colbol

Welcome and..........ease upimage 15mile runs 70 mile bikes its a bit much at this stage of the game you risk burnout or worse injury  its been said loads of times get the Don Fink  Ironfit book and follow a program in there then you really cant go wrong as a first timer

  • I hear you.

A bad habit of mine is overdoing it and I will probably end up burning out a couple of months down the line.  I have done a 15ish LSR a week for about the last 12 months but no bikes to be seen.

Certainly going to consider getting the don Fink book for a read, and probably sit down with a coach at the local tri club to work out a training plan. (and i'll keep reading on here with interest image)

Swam for 1hr 7am. First 30 mins I felt like mental spider thrashing about and really struggling with the breathing but it seemed to click into place after that. seems to take a while to get the breathing going in a morning. (guess that will come with time and lessons!).

  • Still keeping this week easy - which is a strain in itself!  It works though because my legs actually felt bouncy as I walked around yesterday!

Did another bad swim yesterday morning- seem to be going backwards with my swimming at the moment.

An hour just completed on the turbo and wuill probably finish the week with an hour run tomorrow.

Welcome Colbol but crikey are you going for a Kona place?!!

I use Don Fink as a very rough guide just to refer to from time to time to ensure I'm roughly on track. i find it hard to follow any schedule as I work a rolling 5 week shift pattern including weekends and my shifts can and often do change suddenly at the last moment!

  • jeez - woke up at 2 am with calf crampimageimage.  Whats that all about?   I very rarely get cramp.

just been out for 4 mile run. Hair cut this pm....so planning to do long bike session tomorrow. Got a nice week next week as its half term at the college. Yay!  At work Mon and Tues but off for the rest so intend to concentrate on swimming next week ...( can do lunch time swim sessions Weds to Fri).

Now got to Be a Proper Woman and do some Household Chores zzzzzzz

Colbol - I always struggle with the breathing during the first half of a swim session but find it easier once I get half way through. I guess its the shock of the cold water!  Or we take off too fast.

  • off to pool this afternoon with daughter for a muck aboutimage
  • off to pool this afternoon with daughter for a muck about<img src="/forum/smilies/big_smile_smiley.gif" alt="" title="" border="0">
  • Day off today. time to rest and re-think my training for next week. Going to wind it back and be sensible!

I'll be concentrating more on the swim and bike as these are my weak points and get my body used to doing 2 sessions a day at much shorter distances image.

Think Kona is way beyond my capabilities S'Shady. it was just my lack of experience in this sport showing by overdoing it a little image

  • Good decision Colbol also good plan to focus on your limiters

A good solid base week cracked. A fter all my motivation probs with the pool I had a couple of good swims on Thurs/Fri and a great swim session yesterday with daughter spent 30 mins doing lengths with her and tidying up her stroke and then did another 20 mins while she played around a bit it ended up being a good session and the time just flew shes becoming a pretty good swimmerimage finished the day off with a 30 mins turbo/25  min run brick.

Nice and hilly 2 hour ride at a reasonable pace this morning trying to chill by watching spurs go one nil down to Boltonimage dont know weather to stick with it or watch the rugby..... decisions, decisions

I have got a lot of travelling at the end of this week so i will try to get all my biking in early and pack my runners for the last half of the week

  • End of another week -training  bit variable  due to work.

Got in my 15 mile lsr this morning and then after short break went down to gym for an hour session of 100 + rpm session on bike - trying to keep my heart rate pretty low. I just felt my calfs weren't up to a long outside session involving more hills today ( the run was very undulating image) . .Anyway i did just under 30 k and was pleased to find that it doesn't seem so strange doing higher cadence pedalling now. The session was also nice active recovery from the runimage

A question- do you think these high cadence sessions on the bike will have a positive effect ( eventually) on my running cadence?  My running cadence is not naturally 180 rpm and I have to consciously think about it now and try and inject some higher cadence intervals when I run.

This week I am aiming for a midweek long bike ride and more swimming due to no-work from Weds to Fri

Have a good week all. Happy travelling R'max image

  • rode 20 miles into work this morning ended up waiting 20 mins for the ferry in the cold and seem to have got a chill or something as I have been feelingh cold/shivery and not at all well all morning since, either that or one of the kids have given me lurgy  image Its gonna be a real struggle home especially as the clouds are gathering and it looks like rain, and it was all going so well image
  • Did a quick 30 mins at the pool this morning, felt ok! and now i'm about to head out for 15 mile LSR and then spinning tonight with Mrs Colbol (probably ease back a bit in the class).

Ladyfe - i'm hoping the same for me, i currently run about 75rpm (right leg) and would like to get this up to 85rpm without shortening my stride much. Surely high cadence peddling would help over time? image

R'Max - i really feel for you!! theres nothing worse, image. Have you no other option than riding back? If not then plenty of hot drinks, wrap up warm and take it easy. Good luck

  • Just come back from a 45 mile bike.  Toook me 3hr 15mins so you can see how slow I am!

Cant even imagine at this stage riding over double this distanceimage

Good training Ladyfe- I dont think i would be heading to the gym after a 15 mile run!

Take it easy R'Max- as Colbol says- do you have any other options to get home?

  • worse case scenario there is the train but a lot of the time theres no room for bikes so it'll probably be  long slow plod home will be all right then a nice hot bath, tea and an early night should do the trick! I seem to catch chills pretty easily these days I had all my gear on this morning its probably the sweat cooling on the skin and standing around in the cold for so long is the probs + i am not carry a lot of body fat at the mo need to get some mars bars in for insulationimage
  • 3 hr bike today.  13 mile run and long swim scheduled for tomorrow.  going for 1st 100 miler on friday, weather permitting!
  • Nurse ladyfe says nice hot toddy for you tonight Rmax  image. There seems to be a lot of colds doing the rounds again at the mo........colleague at work was sneezing and spluttering all over the place today and one of my students was blowing her nose for England during my sessions today image

My body fat ain't much either..........so I look like michelin man on the bike due to the number of layers I wear but  even then I suffer dreadfully from painfully cold hands image.

Thats a mammoth training week you've got there 8iron. Good luck with the 100 miler!  I have done a couple of 100 milers within the last few years.......these weren't non-stop though - they included a brekkie stop ( fry-up), lunch stop ( pub lunch) and tea stop ( tea and cakes)....and ended with pub meal! Still tough though

Slim - At least you've done 45 miles!  I'm sure the time factor isn't majorly important at this stage.

Today has been rest day and I've just cycled to and from work and thats it. It was sleeting coming home image Tomorrow I plan to run and cycle. can't wait for Weds....no work!  ( apart from shed load of paperwork image)

  • well that must have been the slowest grimmest cycle home ever there is hugemega steep hill in my last two miles and i grovelled up it, still hot bathed big warm dressing gown on sat in front of the fire with a plate of pasta and a couple of dogs keeping my feet warm image no hot toddy thoimage but i may treat myself to hot cocoa later could be a good day to take my rest day tomorrow

good training going on everyone, 8iron have they brought IMUK/Outlaw forward by 3 monthsimage thats some training load!

  • Glad to see you're home safe and sound R'max - in fact now you're sat in front of the fire I bet it was almost worth the pain for the great feeling you've got now?image
  • lol - i am doing lanza IM in may too, so i need to be up here at the mo - glad you said 3 months!! long ones this week are the 100ride with 45 min brick on friday, 13 mile run tomorrow and 4 k swim on wednesday.

Last 2 weeks have been so busy with work though hardly got anything done at all, so panicking a bit! Got 2 tough weeks then family ski holiday for a week, so trying to give the body a bit of a hammering as its going to get some rest soon!

  • 8iron I am so jealous Lanza is on my must  do list that and Roth got to many family things going on so cash is tight but hopefully get one ticked off next year! off for an early night to shake off this cold thingy just drunk a pint of oranje juice no early morning run if its gone a nice easy lunchtime one will do nite all!image

    http://andysironmanattempt.blogspot.com/

look forward to talking to you all in the run up
  • Welcome Andy - found us at last!image

i think you'll find some of us have about as much tri experience as you so dont worry. Have you entered Bala?  Most of us are doing it as a warm up event and it is at a perfect time for the IMUK training.

1hr run on the treadmill this morning before work.  Keeping things nice and steady after my bike ride yesterday.  hope to go for a swim tonight.

Hope you're feeling better R/max and it hasn't turned into a full blown cold

  • Back in work this morning but I cheated and took the car still feeling a bit dodgy so taking my own advice for once with a definate rest day slept like a dead thing last night image

Welcom Andy lots of first timers on here, booking a Bala spot would be a good plan as part of your training plan
