Lesley P where are you? I saw your message and never responded, how are you?
I was hoping there might be more "Race reports" about the Discovery on here, I'm hoping to write a bit over the weekend (no races!!!) especially once the photos arrive back - have promised Phil a set, though they wont be specially good, disposables are not bad for what they are, I certainly DO NOT intend to start lugging round the SLRs ... but you lose perspective cos of the wide-angle, the hills disappear, they never look so steep
Come back Muzza! howd it go? and Dunna - did you get to drive round the whole course?
Saw the Trotters last night, passed on their Team Prize, Dunnarunner is giving serious thought to moving up in distances, has a few niggles which we agree may be from short fast races. Bridget said she really enjoyed it and I think she'll do it again, and Chairman Rog looks like he's up for it too, he's aiming for his 1st sub 3hr marathon at Abingdon later this year. The Trotters were about 10% of the field in DD this year.
I thought there might be more race reports too, but we have heard from everybody on this thread that we knew. Guess it's on to the next race for everybody now. You only get new contacts after the race if they have something to moan about, and there's absolutely nothing anybody could complain about this race, it's PERFECT!!
Paskha - only drove the seriously uphill section from Ashburton to the Rugglestone through Buckland-in-the-Moor, but that was enough to reinforce the severity of the task you all were undertaking. Know the moors well enough to know what the rest of the course is like.
I did run the old Dartmoor Marathon the last year it was held, back in 1990, when I was just a small boy! That was one of the most enjoyable runs I've done - so scenic yet challenging. It started and finished in Tavistock, going up to Princetown and down to lap Burrator reservoir before going through Yelverton, Horrabridge and the back road over the hill into Tavistock. 2 weeks later did what is still my marathon PB in the Torbay marathon on the old course out to Kingsteignton and back.
Shades knows that there's a few of us at Teignbridge Trotters that have put the Discovery on the must-do-one-year list, and maybe, just maybe, that year will be next year.
Dunna - that last line of your message should have some dots after it - it makes an excellent fade out message
But I'm sorry to say that I'm reposting my initial message at the end now!! cos it's disappeared from the beginning, unless it's just on my PC - the message gets referred to in the thread you see

This is a tough hilly, but beautiful course. Started in 1998 at 34.1 miles, Sat 7th June 2003 will be the 5th running (now 32.3 miles). If you've done a marathon recently you can definitely do it! There's something pretty special about going over the marathon distance for the first time and the Discovery has all the "Ultra atmosphere" you could wish for - inc Jail Ale, disco etc. You get pampered! I ran my first 5 wks after my first marathon in 99 ... www.twobridgesrace.org It's YOU against the distance, so you get loads of support from marshalls, helpers, locals - and other runners! Anyone out there doing it?
I think it's the 5th June 2004, (something to do with a leap year).
I emailed the results of DD to a fellow runner who's been injured for several months, he's run DD at least 3 times (I think). He sent me an email back called CRUELTY!!. I just thought he'd be interested!! He'll be back next year, good runner, 4 hrs something, last year.
You're right, your initial message had disappeared, I'm sure the IT people at RW could have retreived it for you.
Liz - good to hear from you. I'm fine and in Brum. Getting some runing in and trying to get my stamina and fitness back to what it was. It's coming along. bit of a knee problem this week, so an excuse to do not much and drink too much. Back to running at the weekend with a boring 10K. Wonder if I'll ever do the DD again. I really enjoyed it when I did it, but then went downhill rapidly after that. I have to be really fit again before I take on another ultra. Back on the moor in August and looking for a good, hard, long run then!! May see you then. Take care. Lesley
Hi Paskha Great team photo from Phil, you look very coy. I don't remember Bruce Tulloh being that tall, he must have been standing on the stage, but having our photo taken with a great running legend, wow!!
Did you see Phil Hampton on local news last night? Two prisoners escaped from the jail and broke into his caravan and helped themselves to mugs of coffee before making their getaway. A Newquay Roadrunners mug was prominently featured!
How amazing - what a lovely place to be in prison!! I wonder if they can get good training in there - I need to be getting off the wine and doing something soon - I've had a "complete rest" for 12 days nearly - not counting the extra 5 hrs brisk walking / steps etc each week (the wonderful leaflets) and a bit of cycling
i now have lots of spare coupons for harry potter 5 for half-price on Sat. 8am, I'm going to get young paskJ up and make him walk up to subway with me - nearly 3-mile round trip (nice walk though by the sea with the Mount in view)
the ladies team photo is a good one!! it's excellent of you SHADES - just how you look when you've finished your marathons!!
I've sent it to richk this morning and he's uploading my Neolithic pics - so I'll be spreading the word - go
www.richk.co.uk
if you haven't already got it in your favourites!! I will be sending him the pics I took going round the Discovery ...
Haven't heard from you for a few days Paskha. Don't think the inmates at Dartmoor would agree with you, I believe the conditions are not the most up to date.
Do you mean you haven't been for a run yet?!!! Not sure if complete rest is good at all, walking is good exercise but uses different muscles, I would definitely end up with an injury it I tried that.
When is your next race?
I think Anastassia looks brilliant in the photo, and so happy, do you think we looked like that after our 1st ultra. She sent me a lovely email, replied yesterday.
Did you find out about the cost issue of the WRN vest?
Hi SHADES - well I've been running here and there (ran 12 mins fast the other day, nipping into town and back before Joe off to school) jogged gently on Sunday for about 10 mins, must go out today for a more serious lengthy affair, I've actually had one or two of my "run down" symptoms, so felt like hugging myself some!!
Next race: apart from the odd "shortie" (may go to Sticker 5 Sat evg 28 Jun) Launceston Half (or whole???) is next!!
my sister's been in Italy for her hols, cycling 100+ miles a day ...
BTW ref previous messages - "doing something drastic" would be selling my house!! not the motorbike - I think about it sometimes, as I cant afford to maintain this place, apparantly you can still buy places for 30K in York - who's kidding me??!
WRN vest - once I can pay for the course (expecting income any day) I will contact Pauline and ask - and arrange to return the spare one she sent me ... what, you've paid for one, so if it's included in the cost of the course, you require a refund?
I wore it doing the leaflets!! I'm excited about the course - and will need all the encouragement & help I can get - it's going to be tough down here. My course is the day before Launceston, so I'll see you there!
we should start a thread once I know more details - there was interest shown on a thread in the Beginners section when WRN was mentioned
This is a record number of messages - er, hmmph - not about the Discovery either ...
but about the latest RRC Newsletter - the Discovery is always in the September one - I don't spose you've had a chance to read it, but I noticed Dinah Cheverton from Tamar Trotters was 4th in the Ballycotton 10, flying the flag!
Also, Margaret Swithenby, the lady winner of Two Bridges last year has written THREE great reports, two on her first Ultra experiences - Two Bridges, London to Brighton and the Trinidad & Tobago M. ... Lucky fish!!
I love reading the RRC Newsletter - it's so quirky and lots of stats for number heads, but it's also the only place I get to read about Ultras
Need to put it in Beginners too, perhaps we'll do that later on.
Sorry to hear you are feeling a bit run down, result of all those races, I guess. Funny how symptoms only appear during the rest period, they day that people that work long hours often get ill on holidays because they've 'wound down'
Haven't had my RRC newsletter yet, hope it comes soon, it's a really good read.

You could email me a message with your email address, then I can email you from home this evening.

going off now - need to get away from the PC!!
I'm disappointed - haven't been able to aclimatise to the heat yet - we just haven't been that HOT down here!

I'm going over to WRN now.
Hi - just to follow up Paskha's remarks - her Neolithic pics are here and her Dartmoor and Dublin ones will follow soon.
Good idea - good time management !!!
Bet you took one at the Discovery though!!
(PS you can pay me later - or let me get ahead of you next time ...)
There are some lovely ones - but first I'm scanning them all in - then zipping them up and sending to richk
the colour balance isn't quite right (slight pinky grey roads) ah well I'm not going to fiddle (thinks +30 cyan ...)
the one of paskha, anastassia & shades at mile 7 water station - WOW - people will only have to look at our grins - and wonder what we're on!!!
Love that photo with the stallion in the foreground.
roll on next year's DD.
Can't wait to see these DD photos - thought the Neolithic ones were great - they really whet the appetite for next year.
