Song To The Siren by This Mortal Coil. The greatest recording ever made bar none, fires so many emotions and still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up all these years later. And it's almost unknown.
Sad in what sense? In an emotional sounds sad I would say one of these 3, all very beautiful songs:
Joy Division - The eternal Bauhaus - Hollow Hills Death cab for cutie- I will follow you into the dark
Sad as in it's sad this song got recorded and sadder still that someone bought it - That song about pizza hut, macdonalds etc, I don't actually know what it's called.
hmmmm, loads of songs make me cry, Wind Beneath my Wings, Bette Midler cos it's my parents song, Lola by the Kinks cos it was played at a mates funeral, One moment in time, Whitney cos its just an emotional song, Raise me up, Josh Groban again cos its just bloody lush and emotional, but i don't think they are sad songs
I think maybe the saddest song is Everybody Hurts REM, an obvious choice but when you're feeling sad its quite an apt song.
Everybody Hurts was sent to me by a friend who had found his father hanged at home following a bout of severe clincial depression. He couldn't talk to anyone about it and eventually opened up to me (a total stranger at the time) and I shall forever associate it with him and his pain.
It's an AMAZING song and I really wish Simon Cowell had left it alone, but I guess REM had no problem with him using it, so I can't really complain either....
All White - ... And you will know us by the Trail of Dead. Eay/Lucky/Free - Bright Eyes Your Protector - Fleet Foxes Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd Winter Winds - Mumford & Sons Don't Let it Bring you Down - Neil Young

I'll vote for that.
or for me, another Queen song, 'These are the day of our lives'

If this doesn't make you cry, you're weird.....
Tears in heavenTell Laura I love her is really sad....
In both senses of the word.
And I've f**king HATED it since the day I was born as people have sung it at me since I was a nipper.
"Here it is" by Leonard Cohen
or Ludlow Street by Suzanne Vega
or maybe Naive Melody by Talking Heads

Another vote for This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren here.
Or
Jim Reves - Old Tige ........................ wah!
It is an amazing song LB, and so poignant for so many people.
Can't say I've heard the "killer of real musics" version, if i have it's erased from memory.
Powderfinger - Neil Young. ("To fade away so young, with so much left undone...."
)
....... that one about about a tree, you know ".... see the tree how big it's grown ........ " " ... then one day the angels came ......."
so bad. so, so bad
I think it's Bobby Goldsboro.... "and honey, I miss you..." The song may be called Honey. I'm not sure.
Truly vomit inducing.
Dunno. Agadoo?
All White - ... And you will know us by the Trail of Dead.
Eay/Lucky/Free - Bright Eyes
Your Protector - Fleet Foxes
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Winter Winds - Mumford & Sons
Don't Let it Bring you Down - Neil Young
Kate Bush - This Woman's Work. Makes me cry every time.
And Liverbird, my daughter is called Laura and you'll be pleased to know that I've strenuously avoided every singing 'Tell Laura I love her' to her!
World Party And I Fell Back Alone
Decemberists Shankill Butchers
Wilco Hate it Here
Nick Cave Ship Song
Billy Bragg Tank Park Salute
All sad songs for very different reasons.
- that's how sad they are.
