Viewing iplayer outside UK

I travel to USA a lot, spending weeks at a time there. I used to be able download iplayer progs through the company server, access to that has now been closed down

Does anyone here use any proxy servers or sharing files websites when travelling.

I did have someone on here who used to upload some files for me which was fab but a great drain on her time.

A VPN service will work. You could try StrongVPN.com, for example. You'll have to pay, but it's not particularly expensive.

Bit sad that I need to do it really It's the only way I can get to watch any decent sport though! F1 season starts again soon, even though you can get it in US, the background and commentary far superior on Beeb Although last year we watched it in a bar, whilst listening to it over the internet on 5Live (who were about 30 seconds ahead of picture!!)

in my experience not all wi-fi points allow VPN access - maybe OK if you have a direct ISP connection

If you're in the USA a lot it might be worth investing in a Slingbox.

Failing that - http://po-ru.com/projects/iplayer-downloader/ will download your programmes as mp4 files so you can take them with you wherever.

 I'm guessing it wont work abroad either - so you'd have to download the shows before you went ? Works for radio shows too.

Thanks Guys, already have the downloader thanks, have used it sometimes for flights! We are in our own apartment so OK for the wifi access. Will check out Slingbox now.

TS - if you're in your own pad, you should be able to access the iplayer direct through the BBC website without using a VPN or file sharing - or am I missing something here??? do you have bandwidth restrictions or something??

FB, You can't use iPlayer if you're not in the UK.

Mister W is right FB iPlayer cannot be used outside UK which is fair enough I suppose, it's a shame you cannot enter a password or something to prove you are a UK licence payer but I guess it is too 'complicated' for them to do.

Slingbox ordered and arrived from Amazon!! Sounds great, Mr TS trying to connect right now - we'll wait and see ...

I use kebrum.com vpn service, it has UK server to watch iPlayer
