Should I do Liverpool or Wilmslow half?

I have a place in the Liverpool half on 28/3 but my mate I intended to run with has pulled out.  I could get an entry for Wilmslow (from an injured friend) on the same day.  I've done Wilmslow twice before (and really enjoyed it) and have never run in Liverpool.

Wilmslow is much easier to get to/from (I live in Manchester) and wouldn't be such an early start after the clocks have gone back!

So I have a dilemma - a bit more hassle to do Liverpool or the easy option of Wilmslow.  Has anyone done both and have a view on what I should do?

  • I have done both and my view is

If you want a fast time then Liverpool is far better, Wilmslow has a very congested start and is a pain in the arse to get to the start/baggage area with all the cars double parked, also causes problems getting away after.

Liverpool is also the bigger event this year 5500 entries against 4000 (I think) for Wilmslow.

If you want scenic countryside then wilmslow wins

  • Liverpool.

But then again - I would say that.....image

  • As LB is doing Liverpool, that must increase the reasons for doing Wilmslowimage
  • Macp - if you don't do Liverpool I would like your number back as we have a waiting list!

If you do then great to have you with us.

  • Having done both and having travelled to both from Manchester I would say Liverpool everytime

OK so Mobberley is quite pretty, but once you have seen one Cheshire manicured lawn you have seen them all, and Wilmslow just can't beat the finish along the Mersey (the last few miles made me go all a bit imageimageimageimage)

  • Here here... or is it hear hear??

  • I am on the waiting list for liverpool so am biased about what youshould do. However i live in liverpool and have tried the route and it is pretty spectacular.

do you know what, I don't know .....
  • <blockquote>Hear hear (Wikipedia):
...Hear, hear is an expression used as a short repeated form of hear ye and hear him. It represents a listener's agreement with the point being made by a speaker.

It was originally an imperative for directing attention to speakers, and has since been used, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, as "the regular form of cheering in the House of Commons", with many purposes depending on the intonation of its user. It is often incorrectly spelled "here here", especially on websites...
  • Now I know!

  • I've not been able to get a number for the Liverpool Half so If you decide to do the Liverpool half would your friend be willing to sell me their Wilmslow number? I live and work in Manchester so could pick it up / pay you.

  • Alan is holding a list of people waiting for a place if you want to add yourself to it.

These places are like gold dust now.

  • cos it is better than wilm-slow innit

Do Liverpool-Parliament Hill is fun -hope its still part of the route?
  • It is indeed!
  • Thanks for all the responses, the runnersworld jury is most definitely pointing to Liverpool.  As luck would have it, my wife & I are spending this weekend in Liverpool, staying right on the river at the Malmaison, so I will have a little pootle out on Sunday morning.  If it charms me, then I'll be back the week after for the big race!

Any thoughts on where we should go for a gentle trot on the Sunday morning from the Malmaison (on Princes Dock)?

  • Head past the Liver Buildings , Albert Dock where you can pick up the promenade by the Liverpool Arena which is the last four miles of the half marathon. It will take you past the Marina and along the waterfront for as long as you want to go.

  • The weather was nice on Sunday, so I enjoyed the run and can imagine next week being good fun, so I'm going to do Liverpool.  I do have a spare for Wilmslow now if anyone wants to PM me (ideally for collection in Manchester!)
