  • Off the top of my head, through Windows Explorer, double click on your username, AppData, Roaming, Garmin, Devices, if you have more than one watch, guess which device it is image, History and then move the files somewhere if you want to keep them or delete. Deleting them wont affect your history on Fetch or Garmin Connect. You might need to check you aren't hiding files or folders to see AppData.

Well, super duper. Not a stress fracture, but I think at this point I would prefer it to be.

The radiographer thinks it is a giant cell tumor and I need to be referred to someone, I forget which department my physio said, for further tests. Luckily, I have a GP appointment in the morning anyway so I can take the report with me (when OH picks it up) and ask for a direct referral.

Now, the report mentioned the tendon sheath, but all I can find on Google (as we all do, ha) are mostly medical sites, which are difficult to understand, and seem to suggest it is usually the hands/wrists and the pictures are very obvious tumours... I don't have any swelling at all in my toe, so can't see it being that. One site I saw where the tumor was affecting the bone seemed much closer to my symptoms.

I suppose radiographers aren't consultants, so I would assume the imaging will be available to whoever I get passed onto in the NHS. I think my physio said I would need to get an ultrasound next to look at what is happening, which is odd as I always thought MRI's were like the ultimate diagnostic tool.

So, this could take a while to get to the bottom of, not to mention what treatment may be needed.

Good job I have one Wispa left in the fridge, I think I'm going to need it tonight.

    Argh.
  • Oh Kelly that's not good news. Sending you some hugs, I would eat that wispa then move on to a bottle of wine!

I guess its going to be a waiting  game to get further tests and confirm the diagnosis, hope this doen't take too long. I know its easy to say but try not to spend too much time googling it as it will drive you crazy. Not sure what else to say but I am thinking of you and whatever it is you will get the necessary treatment and be back running again.x

  • I hope you are sitting with a mountain of chocolate and wine to enjoy this evening image as Lotte says, try not to get too engrossed in "googling" it otherwise you will worry too much. I hope your Dr is able to tell you more tomorrow or push things on to find out for you.
Your right a stress fracture may have been simpler but wait til you get all the info. Thinking of you. x

Lotte- hope you have stopped worrying about Sun, you will be fine. Try not to think about keeping the pace for the 13.1m, rather take a mile at a time. Welcome to run with me but I only ducked under the time so not confident to pace someone, you could see how you go til 10m then push on??
  • Lotte - don't tempt me image. I just bought 3 boxes of Maltesers for my mam today and already have a few Easter eggs stashed around the house.

Mrs D - it is pointless to google as it means nothing to me anyway! There is nothing I can do until I speak to a real person, lol.

I have now read the radiographers report though and it is apparently the bone and soft tissue sarcoma services department that I need. It queries mortons neuroma, didn't I mention that a while back, however explains that would normally show some fluid and there is none, whatever this lesion is ( as they are calling it), it appears fibrous.

It doesn't appear to be a running injury - there is nothing that you can do to cause this - and whatever it is is 12mm, but I swear I can't feel anything abnormal in my toe at all, other than the pain of course, it is so strange. The report indicates that I might need further exploration or biopsy after the ultrasound, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Although I'll now be under the NHS, the private MRI probably saved me 5 months and the fortunate luck of having a doctors appointment anyway tomorrow probably saved me another week image

I half joked to Moraghan that if it wasn't caused my running and I'm not risking turning a stress fracture into a proper fracture, I may as well run what I can manage on any given day, but walking barefoot across the room to get to my slippers and I am reminded, it would not be a good idea. Dull ache I could cope with, but it is so sharp and just not right.

Apologies for any missed lower case letters, or autocorrection errors, I'm too tired to proof read.

Now, where is that Wispa? image

Best of luck to the racers, I still want to hear about your training and racing!!!
  • Hmm, and I was just going to ask you how you'd managed to get that whatever it is....

Thank you for the Garmin help. Fetch is now speaking to it again. Although I had to go fishing through my recycle bin for the 3 latest sessions that I hadn't yet managed to get on to Fetch. I'd deleted them along with everything else.

Raced on Sunday, was hugely disappointed with my time though (40.16). It was multi terrain and pouring with rain which meant the course was just one giant, sandy puddle. I think I gave up on the time when I realised I had the win in the bag. Wasn't even particularly out of breath when I crossed the line. Idiot. I should stick to races I have no hope of winning when I'm after a time!
  • The conditions don't sound like fun. I know the extra seconds are frustrating, but if you can do that time in those circumstances, then just imagine when you find the right course on the right day. I know, easier said than done! If you're not doing an autumn marathon this year you must do the Leeds Abbey Dash.

No, it is just one of those things, a medical issue rather than an injury. In fact, had I not been a runner, it is probably something I wouldn't have noticed until it really grew (if it is indeed what they think it is) and looks like some of the pics I've seen.

I think I understand a bit better. You know how pain in one area may not actually be something in that area? It says the lesion is in the interspace of the 3rd and 4th toe, so it's actually in the fleshy bit, which is why I couldn't feel anything there... initially, until I just started messing with it, lol.

A bit of poking and prodding and comparing with the same space on the other foot, I can feel something further more towards the mid foot. The report says although the tendon is intact, this thing is pressing against the tendon sheath and that must be why I feel the pain in the mid joint of my toe as that's where the tendon attaches.

Medicine and science, eh! Very complex. That's why we're not getting paid tens and hundreds of thousands of pounds and consultants are image
  • Indeed. Well, I hope you get a quick referral tomorrow from the doc!

I am running an autumn marathon - Munich.
  • bloody hell, kelly. that is so unlucky. well, least you have your diagnosis now and can crack on with getting it sorted. can you still x train?
speedy, you can't be disappointed with that run. it sounds as if there is a minute to come of that time with the right course and conditions. why are we so hung up on times? image
  • Dash- its what drives us to keep running and put ourselves through all the pain!!
Kelly- hope dr visit was productive? Had a quick look on google about your toe, looks like an op will be easy enough to remedy but I know that all takes time.
CC2- good time in difficult conditions. Munich marathon sounds good.
  • Dash - should be able to XT, just been out on my bike again for 15 miles... windy!!! Magic wind is even more annoying on a bike image. The only thing with the elliptical is if I'm on it too long my foot feels quite numb and sometimes aches afterwards. It's non impact of course, but I suppose its still quite a lot of pressure over a period of time.

Mrs D - I swear, I am bloody hopeless. I had a GP appointment at 10 and an asthma review with the nurse at 11. What did I do? Only forget the referral letter that was sitting on my kitchen bench. Saw the doc, dashed back home for the letter, changed into my bike stuff and went back for the nurse and handed the referral in. He didn't say how long it would take, but I hope it doesn't take too long. It does look like removal is a probability.

Before you say anything, Dash, the tumor, not the toe... you did joke a couple of months back to just cut it off image
  • Mr KMr K ✭✭✭

Tendon shealth - I know about that image That was my problem.

I bought one of these foldaway bikes - at least I can sit on it for a 60 mins on `rest` nights.

My pain has now all gone now - still some swelling still but I can run...slowly but it`s a start. I`m hoping to get closer to 30:00 mins at tomorrow`s parkrun - I was a little fast last week (28:53 & 29:32)

I did roughly 4 x 6M last week, with an easy week this week image I hoping to jog 10M next weekend.

  • Mr K - good to hear, sounds like you are coming back nicely image

Mrs D / Lotte - can't wait to hear how the HM went.

Short bike to and from parkrun marshaling yesterday, which was probably one of the most scary experiences of my life. Not the marshalling image

OH said that I must try his road bike. He forced me to do it. Said road bikes compared to my hybrid was like running in shorts/vest compared to every bit of winter running kit imaginable. I said I didn't want to, he changed his bike settings and told me to just try it.

Did I pick the most windy day of the year to ride in? Yep! Very scary, I felt like if I made a single movement the thing would fly out from under me. Very pleased to get home!

Less windy today so I tried again and went on a 35m ride with my friend. I won't tell OH yet that a road bike is indeed a heck of a lot easier and it didn't take long to get to learn the feel of the bike image. He's blown his cover now though, cycling uphill is also easier on his bike, no wonder he always left me standing in the past.

I suppose it is the same as when I first changed to SPD pedals, I really didn't like it, but now normal shoes are alien. The only thing now is he needs his bike for commuting, so I hope he has enough money to buy me one image

Feels like a productive morning, I'm sure just over 2 hours on the bike is worth more than 60mins on the elliptical and get to avoid the gym.
  • I can tell you now how my HM went- it didnt!!!
Engine Management Light came on not even a mile from house and car started to kangeroo along the road. No point in trying to drive for 3 hrs to get to Inverness and I read it as a sign as i wasnt feeling 100% anyway. Trying not to be too worked up about it. Hope Lotte did well and it wasnt as windy up north.
So I guess you have a road bike on your wish list now image hee hee. its like night and day isnt it?? Hows your swimming cos you could cross over to triathlons at this rate.
  • Oh no, but as you said maybe a blessing in disguise if you didn't feel that great anyway.

My swimming is absolute pants. I always get cramps in the arches of my feet, definitely no triathlons.

I might go for a short run tomorrow though!
  • Fingers crossed for that run Kelly.

Bummer about the car MrsD! Hope you are feeling ok. I was looking out for you and kicking myself for not exchanging mobile numbers so I could give you your black pudding! Not to worry though I took it back home and it will get eaten!

Good conditions for racing yesterday. I hate a super run and was delighted to nail that sub 1.30 good and proper - 1.27.41, a 5 min pb, its been a long time coming!

  • Lotte - absolutely brilliant time there, you must be really pleased and relieved?? See, there was no need to worry about getting sub 90. Was the course good? Sorry about not being there, if you PM me we can sort out something with the black pudding. Hope you have an easy day today and legs aren't too sore. Looking good for marathon now.

Kelly - ok, what about duathlon then?? You are probably not relaxing your feet enough when kicking. Hope you have a good run.

Hi Kelly sorry to hear of your news!

If it is indeed a giant cell tumour then you are at least very special, 1 in a million in fact image

This page may help (it's US based but AAOS are very good with patient information for these sorts of things):
    http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00080

Hopefully you will get referred to a very specialist specialist who takes quite an interest in getting you fixed!

Morton's is a less serious afliction in a way (non surgical treatment usually):

    http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=A00158

I hope that helps re: info. If you need some more once you have a confirmation of diagnosis I will try to dig someone out here who does feet.

  • Lotte - wow! The ultra training paying off big style. Well done image

Mrs D - duathlons? Too much to think about image. I once ran straight after a bike ride and it was too weird for me.

Curly - I feel like they've waved a possible diagnosis in front of my face, but until I speak to an actual person, or have further testing, I'm still no further forward. One in a million... I know some of the sites I looked at said it was rare, but that would be cool to tell OH he really did marry one in a million, ha.

Thanks for the information. I think by having the private MRI I have skipped most of the waiting time of getting it sorted with the NHS, so I'm keeping fingers crossed it happens quickly, but also preparing myself that it might be a while.

    I ran image

I taped some cotton wool at the base of the problem area ( little tip I read about), but the first half mile was terrible, it hurt with every step. I gave it a little time and was just about to abandon it and head home when the pain suddenly lifted. It went from "I can't believe it hurts this much after over 3 weeks of non impact" to not feeling anything at all. Miracle!

I haven't been on any painkillers and didn't take anything before this run as I wanted to get a feel for how it was completely "clean". I intended to do 3 miles, but that turned into 4 and then into 6. I figured I may as well take full advantage while I could.

As for how the run itself felt? Absolutely horrendous image. I know I have been doing some XT, but it just isn't the same at all. I suppose my legs might have been a little tired after the bike yesterday, but CV wise, it was quite an effort!

    Do I care? Nope.

It hurt a bit by the time I came out of the shower, but nothing too bad, so I guess I'll just see what happens. When I was trying to train through it I had good days and bad and it could be that in a few days it won't like the stress, but I'm happy to take what comes.
  • Should you be running on it? Can you do damage?

Lotte - nice work! It's a great feeling to smash a barrier that's been a long time coming isn't it?!

I'm finally up to Kelly mileage. 77 miles last week. I seem to thrive on it and wish I had time to do more. Bloody work.
  • I miss mileage, sigh.

CC2 - as far as I understand it, I can't do any further damage but equally it can't heal on its own regardless (will need to be surgically removed), so I'm stuck with my lot until I next see someone. I just thought I may as well do what I can tolerate while I am in limbo.

Certainly not for the purpose of training or anything structured, simply because nothing beats running for me.

Having said that, my foot does hurt slightly more this morning, however it always has some degree of discomfort, so it isn't that much more in the grand scheme of things. It obviously isn't worth running through actual pain though, so in future, I'll give it half a mile to warm up and hope that it lifts totally like yesterday, but if not, head home.

I didn't try running today, but nipped out on my bike, em, OH's bike image, for a steady 20 miler. Avg just over 15mph, which I don't think is super duper, but good enough image
  • Mr KMr K ✭✭✭

Glad you like your new bike Kelly image

Last night I ran 8.7M in 1:31 (10.26 m/m) - last week `long run` was 6.7M in 1:08 (10.09 m/m), looking forward to Sunday`s 10M run. It will be in a `race` - Tempest 10 where they film Top Gear but will be jogging along image I have a Chi Running workshop this Saturday.

  • Mr K - sounds like you are heading in the right direction, enjoy the race. Update us on the 'Chi running'.

CC2 - all that mileage AND you are working??? How do you manage it??what mileage would you be doing if you didn't work? Sounds like your marathon training is going well.

Kelly- good for you getting out running (is that for your sanity)??Runners are mad eh? Nobody else seems to get our mentality. Getting quite slick on your new bike there image Read somewhere that 17mph is about the pace you want to keep going at but you shouldn't be worrying about pace really, you should be enjoying just getting out there.
  • Yes, I deliberately turn the pace fields off when on the bike as I know my tendency would be to maintain/push pace each mile. It's just nice to look at after the fact. Most of the miles were faster, but I headed out towards Northumberland and the pesky climbs got me. I'm too scared on the way back to take full advantage on downhills, I always hover over my brakes image

I am beginning to really enjoy it, but hate the fact that it could kill me! There are some nutcase drivers out there. Especially having children, I do have random thoughts of it just takes a few inches of misjudgment from a car, or for me to hit some gravel on a bend and I'm toast.

Running... if I can do bits and pieces here and there, it gives me so much more freedom that anything else, so it satisfies the mental need. As mentioned though, with a few.more runs, it might become obvious that I just can't do it until things get sorted.

Mr K - all steps in the right direction. I assume you have cancelled all of your ultras? Didn't you have a big event coming up at the end of March? Do you think you are fully recovered now and are just building things back up, or do you still have some lingering issues? I know you said you still had some swelling the other day, is that resolved now?
  • LOL Mrs D. If I didn't spend 10 hours of every day either at work or commuting I dare say I could get quite a few more miles in!
  • Figured I wouldn't have a chance to get out on Sunday - I expect a lie in and breakfast in bed! - so headed off for my long bike ride this week.

I had no planned route and just headed where I fancied. It is only a few miles before I hit countryside, so it was interesting. Some tough climbs and as usual the wind felt ever present. I was slightly worried at one point where I was almost at the top of a hill, tried to downshift and realised I had no more gears on that ring and realised I was just about to become to slow to stay on the bike... I don't think it is possible to unclip going up hill image. Thankfully, I got out of the seat in time and finished the hill like a proper cyclist, out of the saddle, but my quads didn't thank me!

Really funny that I had 40miles in mind, but didn't make any special deviations or make any changes to increase distance and got back to my door at 40.11m image

Uploaded my data and temporarily disappointed to see avg pace of 14.9. I know that's decent for 40 miles, but always the competitive woman image
  • CC2 - right, I'm betting on you for your upcoming races!
  • Great cycling Kelly, image you will be surprised how quickly you will get confident on the bike and learn to enjoy climbs like yesterday and use cycling as an effective training tool whilst you cannot run, if you x3 your run distances then that is about what cycling equates too..
Your pace is fine and when you factor in climbs then your flat speed will be quite good, do you find going downhill pretty scary or are you the fearless type of person ?

Anyway I hope you get into the system quickly with your foot and if you don`t think that it is progressing quickly enough then don`t be afraid to phone them up and just remind them that you are still waiting, it is one of those situations where sometimes you need to take the inititive and do some prompting from time to time, I know it`s not the British way but it is your foot that needs mending not theres.

    best wishes

  • If you're into Fetch betting then bet on my for Ashby on Sunday. Usually I do it as 18 miles @ LSR pace then 1 mile MP and 1 mile faster. This time I'm doing 8 miles @ LSR pace then 12 miles @ MP, so guaranteed big PB!
  • Shaggy - yes, definitely find down hills scary, I'm not fearless at all. OH used to tell me tales of his rides out and I finally told him I didn't want to know.

Had another ride out today with a few friends. It was supposed to be 30 and turned into 39! Slightly tired now, but it buys me more biscuits image. I find I am much more hungry from cycling, but not surprising when I'm out for 2.5 hours. It is certainly keeping my occupied.

Avg pace was 14.9 again so I think that is pretty good as quite a few of those were really social pace.

I'll give it another week and then start to chase appointments. It doesn't help that OH and my two boys have all had hospital appointments come through this week, so each time I have glimpsed that tell tale brown envelope and hospital stamp, I got all hopeful only to be disappointed.

CC2 - i'll place some bets then image

Think I'll parkrun tomorrow. To be fair, my foot has been quite sore all week after that run on Monday, but back to normal levels of discomfort now, so what the heck. I probably shouldn't bother, but who knows how long I'll be waiting and it's just for social purposes.
  • Kelly - how did the park run go yesterday? Did you manage to hold back a bit? Hope you managed out on the bike again as the weather has been ideal. Your confidence will grow on the downhills but sometimes you think afterwards how stupid you were to go at such speeds but thankfully you get away with it. Did you get spoilt for mother's day?

CC2 - How did Ashby go? Is Kelly rich now??

HM for me today, about 1 min off my PB but will get chip time tomorrow. Killer hill at 10m which put my pacing off a bit. Pleased with run though and some beautiful scenery ( hills not runners legs )!!!
