TR - you haven't even opened your new watch?! Sort it out!
  • The BusThe Bus ✭✭✭
Lol - how could you not open it and play with it TR? Admirably old skool

Matt - I won't bring it with me. It'll be there waiting for me as it was last time I went to Cornwall

Its a Busman's holiday! Im a technical bod.
  • JooliganJooligan ✭✭✭
Well you've obviously slowed everything down in preparation for that 5K TT SG  :p
Had to laugh when you said you'd not even opened the box yet TR. Well done on doing yr classic 10 w 10x3 again.
Seen some decent cycling on Strava the last few days Bus. Hope there are no repercussions from today's run allowing you to get back to it properly. It's been 4 weeks hasn't it?
So yesterday I went for a 'race' with 2 fell runners. I didn't know the course so had to choose: A) follow the climber & go out hard risking a blow-up or B) start steady with the DH specialist & risk losing my way on the descent. I went for option A. 2.2M wu leaving home at 11am for an 11:30 start. 12K & 1500' starting with a 300' climb over 3K, drops over 400' in a K of narrow twisty footpath then climbs 350' in the 5th before dropping losing all that height in the 6th on a trackless descent through trees. It was here I lost the climber but fortunately the DH specialist saw me looking puzzled at the bottom as she began her plunge so I cracked on with her though I almost lost her on the penultimate descent (300' in 500m) fortunately we picked up a road at the bottom & I was able to catch her on the final ascent (550' in a K) much of which was unrunnable being over 40% incline on dust & loose leaves with no path. Once we got to the 8.5K mark it was back the way we'd come so I left her for dust & tried to chase the other guy down but no joy. A fun blast nevertheless although I didn't really feel like I'd raced. 2.8K cd back home brought the day's tally to 11.4M & 2000ft
Today my legs still felt great so I went out at 10am & smashed myself on 4 monster climbs:  Cat's Hill 1.62M@6.1%, Pludd'sRd 0.98M@8.6%, Vention Ln+ 1.01M@11.9% & Star Beech from Bishopswood 2.06M@5.1as part of a 16M run with over 2,800ft of elevation. Bettered my times on all of them including taking over a minute from the CR on Cat's Hill which the household youngster had claimed just 10 days ago. I reckon that 3rd one is almost the same as the Murder Mile. I took 11 minutes flat to do it!

that is some kind of self restraint TR!!

Jools - looking forward to seeing you get in a race that I can easily understand the pace / distance / profile of so that I can really appreciate the shape you are in as your training looks really hardcore.

4*6 mins for me this morning round the local park loop. Slowed a bit on the last rep unfortunately and was obviously looking a bit worst for wear as a lady came over as I finished and asked if I was having a heart attack!

I see that GAP has disappeared from my cheapskate Strava and that they have blanked out some names on the Segment leaderboard. The changes feel a bit petty to me but the reality is that those are 2 features I've never really used (once I'd grown out of the segment thing, which took about a week!) so I think I'll get by!
  • Reg WandReg Wand ✭✭✭
That sounds like some mentalist hill running Jools. I used to crack open something new as soon as I got it but I have become a lot more patient these days. I guess it's a combination of age and the sheer volume of stuff I can now buy myself  :D

I got new cycling shoes today, the outgoing pair had a broken ratchet and were held firm buy a couple of my girl's pink hair bands. This works fine in the winter with overshoes but not sure I want to rock up to the cycling cafe on a summer group ride like that. Still I got 8 years out of the old pair so they've done well.

Wool - Rather than pick out petty things, Strava are trying to differentiate the paid for version and the free version whilst keeping the free version useful. I guess it's a balancing act picking out enough benefits for the premium version to make it compelling. I have paid for a while and it's nice to know now that payment rewards with some benefits. I suspect once they've developed some more detailed analytics for the paid version, they may move some of the lesser features back to the free version. For now they need a few more bullet points to sell it. One of the main reasons I love Strava is how clean it is and no adverts is a godsend in this day and age.

I find FB so annoying with all the stupid adverts, what the fuck is a pair of 'work from home trousers' anyway? I always thought WFH trousers were pyjamas, pants or a pair of shorts that you didn't quite sweat enough in to make them candidates for the wash.

  • WoolWool ✭✭✭
I understand Reg, I suppose I expected them to focus on developing new things for the subscriber rather than wiping the GAP history for all my previous runs!

For me, you could have stopped your description of FB after the 1st 5 words. It's a necessary evil for me though just from a keeping informed perspective.

Strava seemed to have ruined the training log though, used to be nice and neat on one row per week but now they've split it out by activity. Jools isn't even going to get one week on the screen!

  • WoolWool ✭✭✭
Oh, looks like they developed something new for the subscriber!!
  • JooliganJooligan ✭✭✭
I liked Training Log before & was sad to hear it was going but once I saw the new version I got over that immediately. I’ll miss GAP though never sure how accurately it reflected my running anyway. I enjoyed the matched runs feature but losing it could well be a blessing as being childishly competitive I got into the habit of always trying to beat my average time on a route: a self-destructive mug’s game of course.
Anyway I’m off for a run in the midday sun being both a Mad Dog & an Englishman :D
  • Stevie GStevie G ✭✭✭✭
Wool you sound surprised at our man TR. Id have thought a guy doing 80 odd miles a week and never being tempted to burn some fast bits would show you the self restraint!

Some one on a group discussing the strava change laughed at people shelling top beans on nike shoes but baulking at £4 a month for strava.
But paying for what you got free is a principle issue and we must stand up to the man 😄

At least til they take segs out then we'll all slam our beans on the table asap.

Jools, like Wool i have no real idea on how those hills stack up. Percentages etc. Not even sure how you'd find them out.
Feet works though...as does a murder mile comparison!
That was 680feet and ive never run more than 60% of it before breaking into a stagger climb..

For me there's a distinct level where a hill just becomes too steep to carry on running, irrespective of pace so you'd be doing well to carry on without breaking out of a run.

Mix and match 10 for me today. Up earlier and out earlier so i was finishing at the time i started yesterday.

273 feet trudge in mile 3 , then a stretch round a nice secluded little footy pitch i played at as a kid.
Random foot path took me out near my old school then off to another old footy ground haunt before a real long gradual downhill.
Mile late on offroad on a woody stretch and home for 7.23 average.

And people say SG doesn't vary his runs

Its not really a restraint thing, its more a lack of geekiness/interest. Ill open it later so i can use it at the weekend.

Wool - good tactic for attracting the fillies.

You have varied the running recently SG

Jools - you are right on it lately. I hope you get to reap some ROI later, if a chane of stimuli is good for gains, then you must be due some big gains esp as you hsvnt been able to race  but just concentrste on getting the miles in.

How much is this new Strave fee? Surely anyone who wants the full bells and whistles would pay the fee, unless its a bit pricey. Given how much some runners can spend on entries, travel, shoes, suppplements......

I have some leave to use up, so am off today and tomorrow, but the wife wanted me to go walking with her first, the bonus being that i got to run in the warmth (for a change) at 11am whilst she went to the supermarket.
  • The BusThe Bus ✭✭✭
£4 a month for an annual subscription TR. Not that much really - even a notorious tight-wad like me has decided to stump up  Like Reg says, it's the fact it has no ads makes me OK to pay. Beside, how would I know if I was 375th out of 9678 on a cycling segment otherwise now??? Mind you - got a top 10 on an obscure-ish climb last night (the one that goes through Wycombe Heights golf course for the locals). Doesn't attract many as it's actually a bridleway, even though 95% is tarmac with just a sort gravel section through some house before re-joining the road.

Jools - I expect you are just enjoying the feeling of how fit you must be and the sheer volume of your workload without necessary needing to race (though I expect it would be a good Brucey bonus to get some PBs in the bag )

    Nice ten SG

Foot is a little swollen and tender today, but nothing too bad and no worse than a couple of days ago. I'll probably wait until at least tomorrow before running again though,
  • JooliganJooligan ✭✭✭
Bang on Bus. I'm loving the return to fitness & exploring the neighbourhood but obviously be nice to bag a PB or 2 as a result. Hopefully the sensible approach to the foot will pay dividends.
Cheers Wool. I'm looking forward to it too though not the required taper.
Still keeping it easy then SG :p Looks like that savage climb in Mile 3 raised the HR substantially though.
Went out for a restrained flatter run today & ended up with a progressive HM effort. Couldn't believe how bouncy my legs felt after yesterday's smashfest. Average HR was identical to yesterday (141 bpm) Considerably lower for the first 8K which has a net DH of 320' before a 300' climb to 10K then a short descent before a gradual upwards grind till mile 11 before dropping back down to finish. 714ft & 13.1M in 1:42.  As an illustration of my earlier post I'd guess this was 6-7% quicker GAP (8:09 IIRC vs 7:36 guesstimate) for the same HR whereas you'd expect today's to be slower if anything what with the late start & yesterday's exertions.
  • Stevie GStevie G ✭✭✭✭
    Optical wrist HR jools!
    Ie useless.

I've seen it suggest 4 days recovery after cruising a long run out before. It sometimes seems to sync in with foot fall.

7 min miling in this heat would certainly not be easy right now i can definitely agree!

I often throw a big hill in somewhere along the line. But repeated hills and offroad? No sireee bob!

  • The BusThe Bus ✭✭✭
Clearly cycling does nothing for your hamstrings!!!

Come this evening, my foot felt OK, so I changed my mind and went out for a run, keeping it local and ready to abandon if need be. In the end, it wasn't the foot that was the limiting factor but my legs and especially my hamstrings!

5M squeezed in and it felt more like 15! I'm sure it'll come back relatively quickly, but my, that was a shock to the system after just 17 days of not running (plus the dithering before of course!).

Again, tomorrow will tell whether it was a good idea or not, but a few hours after all seems OK - no pain and minimal swelling. Fingers crossed again!
  • TRTR ✭✭✭
Jools - cracking stuff again, i bet you are on for a big month.

Bus - good news on the foot, fingers crossed for tomorrow......£4, blimey thats not even a beer (if the pub was open), i cant see why folks are upset with that. I guess its cos it was free before.
  • Stevie GStevie G ✭✭✭✭

TR - it's totally the principle TR. Free before = feels a slap in the face to pay for.

It's those real obsessives who pay for these "extras" ;)

Stay cool and relaxed I say, like us lot on here o:)

Just discovered "Wernham Blogg", a podcast by some "enthuiasts" stripping down each episode of the Office and Extras.

Superb. Always a great feeling when you find a new appealing podcast that has tonnes of episodes to hoover through. Have done the Peter Crouch and Gary Lineker/Danny Baker ones to death.

Bus - 17 days off and in the heat is probably enough to explain rustiness.

It seems a long time ago now (August!), but that vertigo after wiping me out for a month was a patient build up for sure. Though it's probably a quicker return from injury versus that sort of thing.

Tossing up a segment splurge tomorrow versus something short reps wise.

Or maybe a mix of the two.

I'll rethink things a little next week as there was a spare online course knocking about on Tuesday - tempo day, and I leapt onto it. Will probably do a double for the first time in months.

Probably time for a bit of a change of emphasis after 6 weeks straight of the same session.

  • TRTR ✭✭✭
    8.03m, av 7.57, av HR 121

( thats a run ive always called 8m, so pretty accurate).
  • Reg WandReg Wand ✭✭✭
Does this mean it’s out of the box, TR?

11.7 miles for me this morning, felt ok so just keep on going today. Couldn’t find my HR strap so used my wife’s watch with optical HR and it gave the same weird result as the old strap I’d complained about first two miles HR really high then settled down after a while. I’m going to buy a new strap and if that’s the same then maybe it’s me!
  • The BusThe Bus ✭✭✭
Get a new you Reg

That's very close TR. When I first got a Garmin I found it slightly under-recorded the routes I'd mapped using OS software.

No real ill-effects on the foot this morning   Bit of swelling still, but certainly not any worse than earlier in the week, so I'm presuming this is just residual fluid  around the injured area that will dissipate over time....
  • Stevie GStevie G ✭✭✭✭

That is close TR. But the beauty now, is that you can tour all over town, mixing things up, rather than have to stick to the few routes you know to the cm. Although we all have our "usuals".

Am no HR expert, but 120 sounds pretty comfy then. I bet I'm on 120 just waking up :D

    Solid one Reg, decent length.

    Bus good news.

I feel the need for an overlong training run report? Here we go..,.

  • TRTR ✭✭✭
    edited May 2020
Reg - thats a decent length run, you can aid HRM contact with gel? The sort then use for hospital scans, or even KY.

Bus - good news on the foot........most of my run distances shouldn't be far away, would be disappointed if ive been claiming distances i hadnt run, google maps and map my run help, in my youth i used to measure my runs with a piece of string on a street map.......we'll see how the routes i run from work and my long run routes measure up.

Not sure what benefits Strava gives, i guess its more of a social thing where you share your training with others (or chase segments). I put garmin connect on my phone and it gave me no end of useless data just for an easy 8m. Not sure why id need Strava too.
  • Reg WandReg Wand ✭✭✭
Fuck sake SG, someone needs lockdown to end quick sharp!
  • TRTR ✭✭✭
I think im going to send my watch back, so i dont end up like SG.
  • Stevie GStevie G ✭✭✭✭

Bloody hell chaps, just trying to spice things up.

Will get back to the same distance same pace every day then

  • The BusThe Bus ✭✭✭
That genuinely made me laugh out loud SG - especially the ranty woman and ladies over 40 now allowed to be attractive

I think it's good you've found a furlough hobby  Just don't go after any of my bloody segments or I'll be out there on a bike with my garmin watch on!!!!

Bike tonight. Hard work, not helped by the wind and Whiteleaf hill probably wasn't the best idea with tired legs!
  • Stevie GStevie G ✭✭✭✭

Ta Bus...but I've removed the posts now.

The first couple of responses strangely sort of utterly deflated me, and I've been thinking for a few weeks to go to ground a bit (and no not because i'm getting banned ;) )

So erm… keep well all, and back soon..ish.

Oh come on SG, we were only pulling yr leg, dont be so sensitive.

For the benefit of others  SG posted a long report (a few posts) of chasing segments down in great detail, myself and Reg teased him about it (the detail in my case). Certainly no offence meant.

    I apologise SG.
