  • I have found you!

    Forum Name- Emma Thorpe

    Name- Emma Thorpe (Em)

    Race No- 44972

Time- I am hoping to be there around the 3hr mark.

Kit - I am running for The PSP Asscociation - Bottle green vest with white writing, black 3/4 leggings.

This is my 2nd attempt at the marathon. 3yrs ago I did it in 5hrs 12mins, but I hit the wall at mile 16 and lost the plot! I did what everyone tells you not to do  and started too fast and I paid for it. Having learnt my lesson, hopefully I will still be together at mile 17 and knowing  I have your support there waiting will spur me on. Thank you so much for organising this wonderful support.

See you at mile 17 hopefully still smiling!

    Em

  • Hi Emma,

Its hard to pace well on a 1st marathon, especially at London where its easy to get carried away with the atmosphere.  I did the same as you at my 1st marathon.

What I did for my 2nd attempt was to make myself a pace band (I think there are some websites you can print them off from now).  The one I made had a target time for each mile marker and if I was exceeding my target pace I was disciplined and slowed down.

Hopefully you'll be strong when we see you at 17 miles image
  • One thing I need to do is post up a map and exact location details of the support area (dont want anyone missing us).

I'll do this at the weekend.
  • Pace band it is then. I will make sure I am smiling at 17!

  • Hi Emma, welcome to the mad house image  I have every faith you'll still be smiling at mile 17 this time!  I used a pace band too, and I have a feeling I printed one from the lucozade website, and then covered it in cellotape to guard against rain (or sweat!) but then I forgot to take it with me on the day. D'oh!!!  I'm wondering whether you might actually be able to pick one up at the Expo?  I would imagine someone there will be doing them, and at least then they'll be in that waterproof fabric-y type material and easier to use than homemade versions I imagine.

Barley, i'll PM the others tonight to make sure we get all the details.  I need to check the list of what we've to bring as supports too.  I will have issues with bringing a lot of stuff from Edinburgh, as i'll only have a carry-on bag, but I should be able to buy stuff on the Saturday to bring along (i.e. plenty alcohol image).  I'll check the list later...must get back to work really!!!!

  • Just a thought Barley, in which direction will the support groups be numbered?

Will 1 be the first one we runners come to, or are they numbered with 8 being the first we reach? I don't want to miss Group 2 and have to run back to you all!

  • Mmm, Ultracas, now you are on Fetch too!!

    Claire is that you?

Yes,yes a hug will be good but you must let me go again to get my medal!!  image

  • Haha, its the cat on the piccie that did it.

  • Hi Jess, welcome.

I understand this is your first marathon?  if youve any questions or there is anything we can help with ask away.
  • Hello there BB and fellow group 2-ers,

Yes, this is indeed my first stab at a marathon!  I do actually have a question regarding the, ahem, facilities....!

Do you know how often there are toilets along the route?  I heard a rumour there are huge queues for them and wondered if this is true?  And do you know if any of the toilet stops tend to be have less queues than others?!

Much as I'm not really aiming for a time I would prefer to minimise time waiting outside portaloos! image

  • In my experience, there are huge queues for the toilets.  There are lots and lots of toilets at the start but also lots and lots of people, the queues I remember were prob in the region of 30 mins?  Being a man I went elsewhere image

There are toilets along the route, though im not sure there are many, there are lots of pubs along the route and I know theyre generally happy for you to pop in (could be that there are barriers or crowd to get through).

If you want to go natural then there are alleys, and stuff you could look out for.

Cant really advise better than that im afraid but if youre not to concerned with loosing a few minutes here and there dont worry to much about it.
  • Hi Jess, welcome to the group imageimageimageimage

I'm a real plodder, so when I did the FLM last year, lots of the toilets towards the last 8-10 miles had little or no queues, but they were too hellish to use, if you get my drift imageimage  However, I got to a bit where there was a gap in the barriers to let folk through, and it was near a cafe, so I asked these guys on the street if they thought I could use the loos in a wee cafe, but they directed me to this plush building (flats or offices - I never did find out!) and I used the loos in there image Result.  So you could always keep your eyes peeled for little cafes or posh apartment /office buildings with public loos!  As Barley said though, if you're not too worried about losing a few minutes in a queue, you'll definitely find a loo somewhere.  if it has a big queue, then it is probably still useable, so give it a go! hehehe.

  • Im heading to the Expo on Wednesday after work, hoping to be there around 6 or just before! Hoping to get myself a little massage while im there!!!!image

Im really feeling stupid nervous still and I keep going over in my head the day which is good as I know they say to visualise things! However Im scared I wont even make it to the end........ Well I know I will coz will drag myself over the finish line if I have too! But I really want to try and do it in under 5 hours! Think maybe I am putting to much pressure on myself!! image

  • Hi

    Forum name Susan Cunningham 2

    Name on vest - Sue

    Vest, blue/yellow stroke association  vest

    Bib number - 48360

I'm sorry, but this is all very new to me.  I'm aiming for 4:30  - 5:00 (but secretly hoping to be under 4:30!).  I'm going to the expo on Wednesday.  What else do I need to tell you?  Oh goodness, I'm nervous!

  • Hi all,

Am feeling very nervous as well now.   It's my first marathon, and like Sue I'm secretly hoping to finish in under 4.30. Can't believe its so close!  So glad of the support that is being given on the day.  I'm sure it will make a real difference.  Can't make it to the Expo till Saturday afternoon unfortunately.  Will there be anybody there from Group 2?  Would be nice to meet someone before the big day!!

    Rachel

  • Thanks for the advice (and warnings!) BB and Lee!

Hmm, sounds like a cafe/ office block could be the best option should the need arise!
